Brewmania celebrates Cincinnati's beer heritage over 3 days
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new event celebrating craft breweries is taking place in Cincinnati over three days, beginning Oct. 1. Brewmania will offer tours, tastings, and entertainment.
Organizer Bill Donabedian said Brewmania will explore what the city has to offer regarding craft beer. It's a celebration of Cincinnati's brewing heritage and craft beer, in general.
Each participating brewery will take part in different events.
On Oct. 2, there will be a free concert on Fountain Square. There will be twelve sampling stations, with two flavors each.
There will also be after-parties each night.
It's just a great city for beer, it always has been, always will be, said Donabedian.
Brewmania starts at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Taft Ale House.
Rhinegeist Brewery- Co-Founder Bryant Goulding
Co-Founder & President Bob Bonder and Co-Founder & Vice President Bryant Goulding started Rhinegeist Brewing in 2013 with the goal of paying homage to Cincinnati’s rich brewing heritage. Located in the heart of the Over-the-Rhine District in Cincinnati, Rhinegeist’s name translates to “Ghost of the Rhine.”
The brewing facility used by Rhinegeist dates back to 1895 and was once used as a bottling plant for Cincinnati’s largest brewery at the turn of the 19th Century. In 2015, Rhinegeist teamed up with Heidelberg Distributing to bring more of their great tasting beer to the state of Kentucky. In 2016, Rhinegeist and Heidelberg have teamed up again to expand the brewery's footprint in Ohio.
Craft Beer Boom: Small breweries continue opening in Tri-State
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Cincinnati is returning to its roots, or hops.
Once known as the beer capital of the nation, with dozens of breweries, the Queen City is experiencing a rebirth of suds. It's part of a nationwide explosion in small, local, craft breweries. The Ohio Craft Beer Convention is in Cincinnati the week of February 6. At the Ohio Craft Brewers Association Convention, what better person to ask about beer than Jacob Beer!
Jacob Beer and the craft beer industry have grown up together. He's with NDL Keg, one of many beer suppliers at the convention. Jim Rack, of Rack Draft Services, makes beer taps, or faucets as they're known in the trade. Ohio has nearly 200 craft breweries. That's a 20 percent increase over a year ago.
One in Cleveland and three in Cincinnati, the new Madtree facility in Oakley, Rivertown, and Brink Brewing in College Hill. There were more than a dozen craft breweries in greater Cincinnati.
Jacob Beer said, No, it's better. You can taste the richness in the flavor, the hopes, the experimental styles that go into it.
The craft beer industry is growing so quickly there are banks which specialize in crafting loans.
Kate Smith with Live Oak Bank/Craft said, Craft is really important. She continued, But the push is towards craft and local. I'd say over the past 10 years its been completely different.
Craft breweries are defined as brewing fewer than six-million barrels of beer per year. All of Ohio's craft breweries combined don't come close to that.
Anheuser-Busch, by comparison, brews more than 100-million gallons annually.

New rules could boost Ky. alcohol sales, tourism
NEWPORT, Ky. (Meghan Mongillo) - New rules on bourbon and beer in Kentucky could boost alcohol sales and tourism to the state.
Senate Bill 11 is sitting on the governor's desk waiting for his signature, and northern Kentucky establishments are already raising a glass to the changes.
New Riff's Distilling in Newport has a new tasting bar. The reason it's new is because Kentucky's Senate Bill 11 will allow it to operate like a regular bar once they get a by the drink license.
Just like you have in Napa Valley and Sonoma, people can drop in and try one of their bourbon cocktails and taste products for a small fee. This would likely boost tourism in Kentucky as well.
Before, only people who bought a ticket and took a tour could taste.
The most important change for New Riff is in the event center. They'll soon be able to use it as a cash bar.
You can imagine [that] corporations want to have the attendees pay, said Ken LewisSo it opens a whole range of opportunities in our beautiful event center. )
That income from the event center is very important, especially because New Riff is a young distillery. Although they make gin in-house and sell other bourbon, they are still waiting for their bourbon to age.
Senate Bill 11 also helps out Kentucky Breweries, said Braxton Brewery CEO, Jake Rouse. Here at Braxton and other breweries around the state, it'll allow them to make twice as much.
Braxton Brewery in Covington just celebrated one year of being in business, so they're only on pace to make about 10,000 barrels. But when they grow larger, there's no longer a 25,000 barrel cap. Plus they can set up at small events, like farmer's markets, without having to go through a distributor.
We anticipate going up to 50,000 barrels. It's going to take some time no doubt, but we are really excited about the opportunity, said Rouse.
Bottom line, Kentucky breweries and distilleries are getting ready.
Governor Matt Bevin is expected to sign the new law, which should take effect in July.
It'll happy hour in Kentucky very soon.

Crap Beer Tours #1 Mt. Carmel Brewing Company
Mt. Carmel Brewing Company is a family owned business, started by its founders Mike and Kathleen Dewey. In 2005 what started as a hobby experiment, blew up into something much greater than that. With Mike?s engineering background, the two decided it was time to take their hobby to the next level. Starting with growlers and one blend, they sold their product to local retail locations. It didn?t take long to catch on, and the great taste of Mt. Carmel is now enjoyed with 16 different blends over time, and retail and draft locations all over the state of Ohio. We got together with Mike to ask him how everything started, and what new things are coming up in the world of Mt. Carmel Brewing Company...

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP (WKRC) -- A popular local craft brewery has unveiled a major expansion plan which includes more beer and more fun. Fifty West Brewery on Wooster Pike plans to take over the Hahana Beach property. They'll invest .5 million in improvements. The additional brewing facility will include bigger tanks to expand Fifty West's capacity to serve and supply local bars and restaurants. Local colleges tap into craft beer boom
CINCINNATI (Sydney Benter) -- It takes more than the right ingredients to make beer. It also takes lots of know-how and with the brewery business booming in the Tri-State these days, there aren't enough people who know how. You used to be able to count Cincinnati's craft breweries on one hand but now there are dozens. It's a blessing and a curse.Right now if somebody locally wants to hire--a brewery wants to hire an experienced brewer that's already here locally, the only way they can do it is hire away somebody from another brewery, says Carla Gesell-Streeter. She's spearheading Cincinnati State's new Brew 100 class. The professor and beer blogger will cover beer history and beer styles.Community college is really good at figuring out whether their workforce has needs and trying to fill those needs and so that's what we're looking at. Students are lining up for courses like this. A class offered at Mount St. Joseph this month is already full and there's a wait list. Those students will take a field trip to Tap and Screw Brewery in Westwood. It's chemicals, it's yeast, it's biological--there's a lot of applied science that goes on here, says Tom Lorenz, owner of Tap and Screw. He says there's plenty to learn and plenty of jobs to be had, Whether it's bartenders or servers or distributors or brewers, it's not just people making the beer, there's a whole raft of occupations that come out of this. Because demand is high, Cincinnati State may offer another section of Brew 100 this fall. Ale-8-One Ginger Citrus flavored soda | The Late One | Southern Food Junkie
Hey, guys check out our latest review of Ale 8 One. This was an interesting Soda. It has been around since 1926 and it has a huge following in Kentucky sort of like Cheerwine does in SC/NC. This is from their website:
Ale-8-One soft drink has been bottled in Winchester since 1926 and is the only soft drink invented in Kentucky still in existence.
Founder and inventor G. L. Wainscott began bottling soda water and several flavored drinks in a plant on North Main Street in Winchester, Kentucky, in May 1902. In 1906, he introduced Roxa-Kola, a popular rival to the cola drinks then available.
After an ensuing court battle over the production of Roxa-Kola, Wainscott searched for a unique flavor for his soft-drink business. Experimenting with ginger-blended recipes acquired during extensive travels in Northern Europe, Wainscott developed the Ale-8-One formula. The product was launched July 13, 1926, and Wainscott sponsored one of America’s first “slogan” contests at the Clark County Fair. “A Late One,” the winning entry, was a pun adopted for its description as the latest thing in soft drinks.
By 1935, Wainscott had converted a livery stable on West Broadway in Winchester and moved his growing bottling operation to it, where it thrived for thirty years until the company built a new plant on Carol Road in 1965. Roxa-Kola was discontinued in 1968, and production ceased on the remaining Wainscott flavors in 1974, when Wainscott’s great nephew Frank A. Rogers III joined the company’s management.
Two years later, a warehouse was constructed on an adjacent lot, and six years after that, a two-story syrup room was added to the main building. In 1989, the company built an extensive addition, which tripled warehouse space and includes a two-story office building.
In 2002, the Ale-8-One Bottling Company signed a distribution agreement expanding Ale-8-One’s territory to include 61 counties of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. The Louisville and Cincinnati metro areas were included in this expansion as well as Eastern Kentucky regions of Ashland, Pikeville, and Hazard.
