Slioch-The Spear in gaelic
Head over to munrodrone.com for Scotlands Munros filmed from the air.
Whats your favourite Munro?
Beinn Alligin, Torridon, West Highlands of Scotland
Ascent of Beinn Alligin (The Mountain of Beauty) comprising two Munros: Sgurr Mhor 985m, and Tom na Gtuagaich 922m. Part of the celebrated Torridon peaks, N W Scotland, UK.
A classic Munro providing every delectation the walker could desire: deep corries, imposing buttresses, airy pinnacles and magnificent views. Nowhere in Britain do mountains so proclaim their individuality quotation from 'The High Mountains of Britain & Ireland' by Irvine Butterfield. The best book I possess!
Beinn-Eighe

On the Summit of Beinn A'Chearcaill
On the Summit of Beinn A'Chearcaill in Torridon
MUNROS: Slioch (Part 2) - with fantastic clear views over the 'Last Great Wilderness of Scotland'.
Anr enforced audio change as YouTube sadly loaded adverts onto the previous version of this video and ruined it completely. Nonetheless, the soundtrack on this version is provided by MTWA from the cd 'Argus though the Looking Glass': the two tracks used being 'Leaf and Stream' and 'Throw down the Sword'. Also, congrats to Robert Reid, what a hike to bag your 1st Munro mate eh!
This is Part 2 of a long day [May 2008] in the mountains, this time on SLIOCH, 'The Spear', with fantastic clear views over the 'Last Great Wilderness of Scotland' and much more. This is Scotland at its finest with clear views of 'THE MAIDEN', the remotest mountain in the United Kingdom (and therefore the remotest Munro).
Was fortunate to have a conversation with COLIN PRIOR earlier this year wherein he asked me if I'd climbed Beinn Airigh Charr as that was the summit from which he'd photographed 'The Maiden'. Explained that we had bypassed the 791m 'Hill of the Rough Shieling' Corbett on two occasions en route to the barn at Carnnore for attempts, abandoned by flooding, at those remote Munros.
The Corbett Beinn Airigh Charr has a steep tower on its north face called Martha's Peak (Spidean Moirich), named after a shepherdess who had a fatal accident there. In times long since past, cattle were pastured high on these tops during the summer and it was while winding thread on her spindle that Martha had that fatal accident on the mountaintop. The story goes that her spindle fell down the rocks and she died in her efforts to recover it. When Mr.Prior stayed overninght on this mountain for his early morning Fisherfield photoshoot he shared the summit with a grazing party of thirty or so wild goats.
Watch Part 1 for the walk-in alongside the Kinlochewe River that leads to the foot of Sgurr an Tuill Bhain and a view of the remotest 2 Munros in Scotland, A'Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mor beyond Lochan Fada, where the views continue as this video commences.
The 981m grand Torridonian sandstone mountain, the 'Spear Hill' sits on a foundation of Lewisian gneiss and is truly one of the real must-see sights of the Northern Highlands. This is the continuation of our walk from Incheril car-park en route to Sgurr an Tuill Bhain and then to the Highland calendar-favourite, the majestic SLIOCH above Loch Maree.
It was in the 1932 revised edition of 'Scotland' by A.R.Hope Moncrieff that Loch Maree was described thus: Less smiling than Loch Lomond, it lies more wildly among naked pyramids of quartz, Ben Slioch the most conspicuous point of them , but this lake has the same beauty of wooded islets at the lower end, where a group of half-drowned hillocks form a minature archipelago, grey with lichened stone, and bosky with birch and hazel. On one of these are the ruins of a chapel of the Virgin Mary, who was perhaps godmother to Loch Maree.
The mountain has also appeared as a backdrop in the movie 'Highlander' and the Scottish national tourist agency has even used video footage of Slioch in its television advertisements. The mountain has twin summits with the southern-trig-point-summit standing at 980 metres whilst the northern top is situated on the edge of the cliffs and is a finer viewpoint. Indeed, in recent years this has been elevated to a height of 981 metres by the Ordnance Survey making it the highest point on the mountain. Sliochs isolation from other mountains ensures dramatic views over the 'Last Great Wilderness' of the now treeless Fisherfield Forest and the six Munros therein. The Torridon mountains and Loch Maree can also be seen and all those excellent views are contained within this video.
Fom the 1951 writings of author Seaton Gordon: Chief among the hills of the country is Slioch. It rises from the east shore of Loch Maree to a height of 3,217 feet. Slioch stands alone, and its beauty and symmetry can the more easily be realised because of this. Especially striking does it appear when seen from the west.
Loch Maree takes it name from St.Maolrubha; its most celebrated island is Eilean Ma-rui, St. Maolrubhas's Isle. Queen Victoria visited the island in 1877.
He also recalls from his 1948 'Byeways': Loch Maree is a loch encircled by great hills. Most imposing of these hills is Slioch, standing a little apart from his fellows as a chief amongst his clansmen. Indeed.

Exploring the Woods of Torridon | Life on the Road
*** Weekly Vlogs Published Fridays 18.00 UK ***
This new series shows my life (the ups and downs) as a travelling photographer, looking to become location independent at some point in 2019 ...
In this weeks video I'm back on the mainland, and back amongst the trees in Torridon. Such a fantastic place with mountains that seem to explode from the sea itself and of course beautiful Autumn Colours pretty much as far as the eye can see
Hope you enjoy ..

Landscape Photography: TORRIDON and APPLECROSS
In this video I am in Torridon, Northwest Scotland. In some fairly grim weather I head to two locations to capture the beauty of the Highlands.
(nb. The cracks appear as mountain fever kicks in and I have an Alan Partridge moment ! )
At first light I take a 3 mile hike to a wonderful Scottish loch to photograph a classic scene of water, silver birch trees and snow-capped mountains.
Despite enduring driving rain, cold and winds up to 35-40mph, I manage to use the 5 minutes of golden light I get to capture two images.
Then as the weather worsens in the afternoon, I try and use the dramatic conditions to head to a waterfall at the beginning of the famous Applecross pass road
This is the notorious Bealach Na Bah road that climbs 2000ft in just a few miles and is always hit by heavy snow throughout the winter and has a permanent snowplough on call . But the mountains and mist just ooze atmosphere and drama.
You may well ask..why do this video in such testing conditions?...Well I certainly asked myself a few times as I got colder and wetter but it's important to show any less experienced photographers what the conditions may, indeed often are, really like, so they prepare properly and do not take the mountains too casually.
But also, I want to convey the beauty of this amazing part of Scotland and always remember that we need to just enjoy the location and accept the potentially great images are just the cherry on the cake if we get them.
I really appreciate feedback and comments and promise to try and answer all constructive questions.
Please SUBSCRIBE if you’d like as it really helps the motivation !!

Don't forget about the castles along the North Coast 500 route there's the famous Eilean Donan Castle, the Castley of Mey, Strome Castle, Glenrobin Castle, and many castle hotels to stay in as well.
And there is plenty of wildlife to see. A highlight of our tour was Reraig Forest tour to see the deer, stags and sheep on the property. Plus the wildlife of Duncansby Head where migrating and nesting sea birds soar through the air.
