Year of Coasts & Waters 2020
In 2020, Scotland will be celebrating its Year of Coasts & Waters through a year-long programme of exciting events, festivals and activities that everyone can get involved in. From historic harbours and winding waterways, to sweeping coastlines, the very best in seafood, whisky, wildlife and wellness – Scotland’s reputation for its rich natural and cultural heritage is one not to be missed.
Water is a huge part of Scotland’s landscapes and is the life-blood that keeps our valleys green and rivers flowing. Many of our much-loved attractions and natural features have been sculpted by the sheer force of water alone and they are a real sight to see up close, so what are you waiting for?
Scotland’s natural environment is out of this world. Picture immaculate structures and formations poking out of the coastline and withstanding the force and pressure of the powerful waves around them. Bow Fiddle Rock in Moray, Yesnaby Stack in Orkney, and Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa are just a few of the coastal formations you can uncover.
Elsewhere, Scotland features hundreds of glittering lochs in all nooks and crannies of the country. From the infamous Loch Ness just south of Inverness, and the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, to the beautiful Loch Maree in Kinlochewe, and the royal Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire, there are plenty for you to uncover.
Taste the salt in the wind, feel the crisp sea air on your face, and listen to the soothing sounds of seabirds and crashing waves as you wander along one of Scotland’s stunning beaches. There are hundreds of beaches, bays, harbours and sands across Scotland that you can explore, all of which are set to impress. Some of the best beaches in Scotland include Ayr Beach on the west coast, Achnahaird Beach on the north west coast, Seacliff Beach in East Lothian, and Coldingham Bay in the Scottish Borders.
If you keep your eyes peeled, you can spot hundreds of species of wildlife across the country. From the elusive pine marten and fluffy red squirrels in the many forests, to seals and dolphins off the coasts, and sea eagles soaring above you, there are plenty to see.
Scotland is overflowing with history, culture and heritage, from Neolithic villages, to 18th century battlefields, there are hundreds of attractions and locations to explore across the country. Venture on Scotland’s Castle Trail where you can uncover 19 of Aberdeenshire’s most famous and dramatic castles, including Dunnottar Castle on the coast, the grand Castle Fraser, and the magnificent Duff House. Elsewhere, you can explore ancient artefacts, precious paintings and a whole world of fine art at the many galleries and museums that Scotland boasts. From exploring the history of the Highlands at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, to uncovering intricate Scottish art at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, there is plenty to get involved in.
Scotland wouldn’t be Scotland without a little adventure and activity. Scotland is the Home of Golf and boasts prestigious and ancient courses across the country, alongside featuring lands and coastlines that are made for adrenaline-pumping adventures. From world-class watersports, and mountain biking down rugged terrain, to aqualining, and scaling the towering heights of the Cairngorms, Scotland’s magnificent great outdoors are endless.
Whisky, or Uisge Beatha in Scottish Gaelic, is a very popular part of Scotland’s culture. In our distilleries, skilled distillers take pure water from crystal-clear streams, and golden barely from the fields, and transform them into the delectable spirits we know and love today. There are over 100 active distilleries in Scotland, including Balblair in Ardmore, Glenmorangie, and Caol Ila Distillery on the Isle of Islay, to name a few.
With hundreds of seaside towns, harbours and ports dotted around the country, Scotland boasts delectable seafood dishes to try. Taste freshly caught fish, such as smoked mackerel or salmon, at the many local farmers’ markets that bring together the area’s top producers. You can even head off on Scotland’s Seafood Trail which encompasses spectacular coastal scenery alongside seafoodie delights to sample at a variety of waterfront cafes and restaurants across Scotland.

Don't forget about the castles along the North Coast 500 route there's the famous Eilean Donan Castle, the Castley of Mey, Strome Castle, Glenrobin Castle, and many castle hotels to stay in as well.
And there is plenty of wildlife to see. A highlight of our tour was Reraig Forest tour to see the deer, stags and sheep on the property. Plus the wildlife of Duncansby Head where migrating and nesting sea birds soar through the air.

Scotland from Above - North Coast 500
Long open roads, vast scenic landscapes, wide meandering country tracks and some of Scotland’s finest coastal scenery are just a few of the memorable things that await you on the famous North Coast 500. So, strap yourself in and prepare for a road trip of a lifetime.
The North Coast 500 is a world-famous circular driving route starting in the ‘capital of the Highlands’, Inverness, and weaving its way along the west coast to Applecross, northwards to Torridon and Ullapool, before passing some of Scotland’s most northerly points, Caithness and John O’Groats. From there, journey south through Dingwall back to Inverness.
Here are some picturesque points you can see en route, or even stop off at for a longer stay:
Located in northern Wester Ross, Inverpolly is home to some of the most distinctive mountains in Scotland, including Stac Pollaidh, Cul Mor, and Cul Beag, and boasts incredible scenery and views no matter where you go.
A beautiful crescent of sand in Ullapool, Achnahaird Beach boasts a sandy plain and rock pools to explore, along with stunning views of Stac Pollaidh and other nearby mountains. Most of the surrounding landscape is part of the Inverpolly Nature Reserve, so keep your eyes peeled for wild cats, pine martens, golden eagles and more – a perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts.
Make sure you make a stop to the see the historic ruin of Ardvreck Castle. This 15th century castle stands on the shores of Loch Assynt and is famous for its role in the turbulent events of 1650 involving the Marquis of Montrose.
Sitting on the banks of the Dornoch Firth, next up is Balblair Distillery – one of the oldest the world. Enjoy a tour and learn about the history of the distillery, how the vintage malt whiskies are produced and see why all the casks are ‘timed to perfection’.
Venture along the winding road to Kinlochewe through Glen Docherty for mesmerising views and a captivating atmosphere that will leave you in awe. Looking down the glen, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Loch Maree where you can see black-throated divers by the lochside. Loch Maree is the fourth largest fresh water loch in Scotland and features a series of scattered islands boasting natural woodlands of original Caledonian Pine Forest.
Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and is the largest in the Northern Highlands. Admire its French chateau appearance and learn about the centuries of historic events that the castle has lived through.
Making the journey extra special, is venturing over Kylesku Bridge. This distinctively curved concrete bridge crosses the Loch a’ Chairn Bhain in Sutherland giving extraordinary views of the surrounding landscapes on the way.
Suilven, one of the most distinctive mountains in Scotland, is a real sight to see. Rising almost vertically from the bogs, lochs and moorlands of the Inverpolly Nature Reserve, it is a bold natural feature that you can see from miles away.
If you want to be stunned by a white sandy beach complete with unparalleled views, then make sure you pay a visit to Mellon Udrigle Beach. Back by dunes, framed by rocky headlands, featuring clear water, sparkling white sand and surrounded by stunning scenery, it’s a no-brainer that this beach is a must-visit, so get packing your bucket and spade!
Located in the north east near Portmahomack, the Tarbat Ness Lighthouse was engineered by Robert Stevenson in 1830 and overlooks the Dornoch Firth and out to sea – giving extraordinary panoramic views and the chance to spot some playful dolphins.
Explore the sheltered, sandy dunes and heather covered grasslands of Gairloch Beach. Venture on the surrounding walks and footpaths and keep your eye out for local wildlife, or visit the local town for a bite to eat in Gairloch.

On the 21st June for the Summer Solstice I drove to the beautiful Loch an Eilein near Aviemore to take some photos and some drone video of this stunning location 30 minutes from where I live in Inverness. from Loch an Eilein you can see the beautiful Cairngorm, you can walk up to the top and also ski in the winter. The mountains and surrounding countryside are also beautiful.
Morvich Club Site
Located on the lush green, wooded valley floor and surrounded by picturesque hills and mountains, Morvich Club site is the ideal getaway for those who enjoy the great outdoors. The National Trust for Scotland leads guided walks for all abilities from the site through the surrounding countryside which has been designated a National Scenic Area.
The site is also ideally located for exploring the many castles nearby including Eilean Donan, which is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland, while excursions to the Isle of Skye are also popular with guests.

The Newlands Pass Summit, Lake District, Cumbria, England.
The Newlands Pass, also known as Newlands Hause, is a mountain pass in the English Lake District. This short video was taken at the highest point on the pass at an altitude of 1,093 feet (333 m). Mountain views inclu. Knott Rigg, Eel Crag, Wandope, Whiteless Pike, Grasmoor & Robinson. The Newlands Pass is one of three passes that link the tourist area around Keswick, including Derwent Water and Borrowdale, with the valley of the River Cocker, including the lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater. From north to south these passes are the Whinlatter Pass, the Newlands Pass, and the Honister Pass.
Scottish National Trail - Stage 1 (Kirk Yetholm to Harestanes)
The Scottish National Trail is a 536 mile/864 km-long long distance walking route running the length of Scotland from Kirk Yetholm to Cape Wrath.
The Trail offers very varied walking, following long-established footpaths for much of the distance but becoming progressively more difficult as it heads north, finishing with a tough stretch of backpacking - with some pathless and demanding terrain - on the final stretch of the Cape Wrath Trail.
Early June, 2018, I took a few days out to complete the first 4 stages of the Scottish National Trail between Kirk Yetholm and Peebles. I actually started from Berwick-on-Tweed, England after catching the Penzance cross country train from Glasgow Central. I walked the Northumberland Coastal path as far as Lindisfarne where I then followed the St. Cuthberts Way to Kirk Yetholm, taking up 6 days in total. I'll return to Peebles at some point (hopefully this year) and continue through Edinburgh and across central Scotland when I have managed to save some money, as the next few stages may require overnight accommodation.
I didn't film the sections between Berwick-on-Tweed and Kirk Yetholm because (a) it was boring and (b) it was not part of the SNT. Hope you enjoy the videos and there will be more of the SNT to come once I have the funding.
Stage 1
I cover approx. 14 miles of the trail and find a suitable camping area about 4 miles short of Harestanes. In the next video, I make my way towards Melrose and set up camp between the Eildon Hills.
