It was begun by Jaya Raya, also called Bichi Raja, an ally of the Ratta Dynasty, in the year 1204 AD. It has undergone several renovations over the centuries under dynastic rulers of the region.

Kote Keri (Fort Lake) Belgaum City

Kote keri (Fort Lake) is in Belgaum city near the fort. The lake, which has a small island, is now house to a host of birds of different species, which is also attracting bird watchers. A more than two-kilometre long single pathway around the lake with cement chairs to relax on, in the lush green and serene atmosphere, lends a haunting view and enchanting feeling to the visitors. The facilities available here include pedal and motor boats, family train, indoor games, video games, tora-tora, dancing fish, magic bridge (vortex), sun and star, children's park, jumping balloon, small train, food court, cultural and social activities and beautiful fountains serving as oxy-generators for fish. This recreation centre also serves as a tourist attraction for families from nearby towns and villages and school and college students wishing to spend a holiday away from home. The young and the aged have found in this lake the most ideal spot for a morning walk or the one at dusk to do some stretching, sit for a while on its bank, relax and spend leisure time in the company of nature to become healthy, physically and mentally.
