Belle Isle Aquarium of Detroit, Michigan
Director Summer Ritner discusses the Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest operating aquarium in North America still in its original location. MSHDA's Historic Tax Credit program has been key in supporting vital maintenance and upgrades, keeping this important, Detroit-based cultural asset free and open to the public.
A Moment in Detroit. Beautiful Belle Isle Park
Detroit's Belle Isle Park is the largest city owned island park in the United States. It was opened in 1845 and contains 982 acres of land. It is larger that New York City's Central Park. Belle Isle is the home to the oldest aquarium in the United States opening in 1904, and the Belle Isle Conservatory, a greenhouse and a botanical garden also built in 1904. On the island you can view several statues of people from Detroit's past, along with nature trails. A one half mile swimming beach, picnic areas, and bike trails are available. Another Detroit Gem!

The Detroit River is 28 miles from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, is an international waterway, and one of
the busiest in the world.
Its largest tributary is the River Rouge in Michigan, which is actually four times longer than the Detroit River and contains most of the basin.
In 1907, the Detroit River carried 67,292,504 tons of shipping commerce through Detroit to locations all over the world (London shipped 18,727,230 tons, and New York shipped 20,390,953 tons).
The Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River carried 75% of all liquor smuggled into the United States during Prohibition.
The deepest portion of the Detroit River is 53 feet. Fish species in abundance in the area include lake whitefish, sturgeon, silver bass, green bass, salmon, perch, and walleye.
It is estimated that walleye fishing alone brings in $1 million to the economy of communities along the lower Detroit River each spring.

Walk through the Belle Isle Conservatory & Aquarium with me! Detroit Michigan, Fall 2016
Nick and I just got home from our little trip to Detroit and I'm excited to share some fun videos with you! We were in Michigan visiting family and working, but we also took time to experience some of the beauty that the state has to offer. The Belle Isle Conservatory was one of my absolute favorite places! I'm now on a hunt to find a similar conservatory in Southern California, if you know of one let me know!

Hi, I’m Alli!
I’ve been making videos on this channel since June 2014, but I’ve been watching youtube videos for much longer ;). Before starting this channel as my creative outlet, I was in a major rut and thought the challenge of making a video every week would help. I'm happy to report that it did! Making Youtube videos is now my favorite hobby and I’m excited to see where it can take me in the future.
On this channel, I share my journey toward a capsule wardrobe, travel videos, home decor projects, healthy recipes, natural beauty recommendations, and more! My husband (Nick) and I are also documenting the renovation of our 1974 dodge travco motorhome: lovingly referred to as the Cherry Travco!

Michigan group works to restore historic Belle Isle sawmill in Detroit
A local group is working to bring the sawmill on Detroit's Belle to its former glory.
The sawmill dates back to the late 1800s, running for about 80 years before shutting down.
Today, the sawmill is no longer in use and is abandoned. A plan to restore the mill was revived when Belle Isle became a state park in 2013.
The Arboriculture Society of Michigan was established in 2015 to promote arboriculture and urban forestry professions across the Great Lakes region.
Joe Aiken leads the ASM Foundation as president, and recently, his team has been working on an exciting volunteer project: restoring the historic Belle Isle Sawmill in Detroit.
