A Moment in Detroit. Beautiful Belle Isle Park
Detroit's Belle Isle Park is the largest city owned island park in the United States. It was opened in 1845 and contains 982 acres of land. It is larger that New York City's Central Park. Belle Isle is the home to the oldest aquarium in the United States opening in 1904, and the Belle Isle Conservatory, a greenhouse and a botanical garden also built in 1904. On the island you can view several statues of people from Detroit's past, along with nature trails. A one half mile swimming beach, picnic areas, and bike trails are available. Another Detroit Gem!

This park is busy, beautiful and welcoming to everyone. There isn't a more beautiful site in the morning or evening than being on Belle Isle to witness the sun rising and setting. The wildlife, water, and boats while looking at two countries is stunning.

Belle Isle is a 982-acre (1.534 sq mi; 397 ha) island park in the Detroit River, between the United States mainland and Canada, managed by the Detroit Recreation Department. It is connected to the rest of Detroit, Michigan by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island city park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.
It is home to the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory (1904), the Detroit Yacht Club on an adjacent island, the Detroit Boat Club, James Scott Memorial Fountain, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a Coast Guard station, and a municipal golf facility. The city maintains a Nature Center where visitors are able to traverse wooded trails and view wildlife natural habitats. The island includes a half-mile (800 m) swimming beach.
At 982 acres (1.534 sq mi; 397 ha), Belle Isle Park is the largest city island park and is larger than Central Park in New York City, also designed by Olmsted. Although Belle Isle is the largest island park, it is not the largest island near a major city. Key Biscayne Island adjoining Miami, Florida has Crandon Park with about 800 acres (1.2 sq mi; 320 ha) and the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park with 400 acres (0.62 sq mi; 160 ha) and the island includes the residential village of Key Biscayne.
Detroit's River Rouge Park is 1,172 acres (1.831 sq mi; 474 ha). The City's Parks and Recreation Department manages 6,000 acres (9.4 sq mi; 2,400 ha) of parks. The Huron-Clinton Metroparks authority manages 24,000 acres (37 sq mi; 9,700 ha) of parks and beaches; however, this does not include all parks in the area. There are thousands of additional acres of parks in metropolitan Detroit.

The Detroit River is 28 miles from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, is an international waterway, and one of
the busiest in the world.
Its largest tributary is the River Rouge in Michigan, which is actually four times longer than the Detroit River and contains most of the basin.
In 1907, the Detroit River carried 67,292,504 tons of shipping commerce through Detroit to locations all over the world (London shipped 18,727,230 tons, and New York shipped 20,390,953 tons).
The Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River carried 75% of all liquor smuggled into the United States during Prohibition.
The deepest portion of the Detroit River is 53 feet. Fish species in abundance in the area include lake whitefish, sturgeon, silver bass, green bass, salmon, perch, and walleye.
It is estimated that walleye fishing alone brings in $1 million to the economy of communities along the lower Detroit River each spring.
