Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is situated on the R43, 18km outside Hermanus and a mere 75 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. This 200-hectare security and boating estate is also a working wine farm, renowned for producing outstanding quality from its cool climate vineyards in the Walker Bay. The estate is bordered by the natural Bot River lagoon, teeming with fish and birdlife. With the longest stretch of vines facing the Atlantic Ocean, the estate is nudged by the majestic Palmiet Mountains and natural fauna and flora on the other side, nestled amongst vineyards and olive groves where South Africa’s national bird, the blue crane, annually comes to nest.

Fisherhaven

If you want to see the romantic symbol of the remaining of the Anglo Boer War wild horses—you’ve come to the right place. A place where these wild horses still run wild, lapping up the leisurely sun and drinking in from the unscathed lagoon, grazing on natures finest grass fields. A herd of wild horses are known to roam free in the marshlands, next to the Rooisand Nature Reserve.Reputed to be the country’s only herd of wild horses, legend goes that evacuating British soldiers let their cavalry horses loose in Kleinmond lagoon at the end of the Anglo Boer War. By the 1940s the herd had grown to over 400. Totally wild, they roamed the river area, decimating precious grazing until farmers rounded them up or shot them. Only three horses escaped. Today, descendants of the herd splash through the lagoon or canter between sand dunes, running wild, kicking up water droplets that glint like diamonds. Free from human intervention, these magnificent creatures have braved the elements for many decades. They fight often and fiercely and are covered in scars, appearing sometimes heroic and sometimes battle weary.

During World War II, Royal Air Force (RAF) Squadron 262 established a diversion base at the lagoon and Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boats operated from here. The land on which Fisherhaven is situated was originally part of the Afdaksrivier farm which was first recorded in 1754. Before that the area of Middelvlei was first settled by the Khoisan people.

Fisherhaven is a suburb of the whale watching town of Hermanus in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is situated next to the Bot River Lagoon, about 14 km from Hermanus center and about 14 km from Arabella Country Estate and Golf course. There is an abundance of indigenous fauna and flora.

Fisherhaven is a popular birdwatching and holiday destination. Over 120 bird species can be found in the surrounding area. Many water sports can be done on the lagoon including waterski, powerboating, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and fishing.
