Train trip to the Jungfrau Mountain at the Top of Europe, near Interlaken and Grindelwald, Switzerland. Europe's highest railroad line will bring you up to a spectacular world of perpetual winter, dominated by massive, snow-covered peaks reaching over 13,000 feet high and surrounding the continent's longest glacier. Many consider the train ride up one of the finest, most picturesque in the world, where getting to the top is half the fun. The journey from Interlaken to Grindlewald can be easily made on the Bernese Overland railway, and it travels on a scenic route through the valley and along the river and passes several villages. There are magnificent mountain views all along the way.
The hundred-year-old rail line from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch is one of Europe's great engineering wonders, the world's highest subway climbing through four miles of tunnels inside the rock. The beginning of this 50-minute journey is not underground, and momentarily offers a great view; so sit on the right side of the train. The train makes two brief stops enroute to let everyone out for a walk through short tunnels to viewing stations, where you look through windows at the nearby mountain peaks and the landscapes far below.
Upon arrival at the end of the rail line, you walk through an ice tunnel decorated with ice carvings and then approach a sight too amazing for description or film. You really have to pay your dues and go there in person to experience the exhilaration of standing at the top of the world, surrounded by Alpine giants of snow.The observation deck and snowfield are at 11,350 feet, flanked by the jagged peaks of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft.) and the Mönch (13,449 ft.), which form a valley that cradles the Aletsch Galcier, an endless field of snow that stretches 13 miles to the horizon.
Plan on spending an hour or two at the top, playing in the snow and exploring the various levels and exhibits of the visitor center, then catch a convenient train back down the route you came. You return to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change trains for a different return route that will take you through Wengen and down to Lauterbrunnen.

The first in this 3-parter about getting the best deal when travelling to the mountains for your next holiday. First up...
Flying - this is how most people get to the mountains. If you’re on a tour
operator package - and you can get some cheap deals if you sign up to their newsletters - then flights are included. I’ve detailed tour ops and how to get their newsletters and best deals elsewhere, but here’s a quick rundown of the UK’s top ten tour operators and their newsletter/deals sign up page:
If you’re going DIY, the main airports you’ll look to use are Geneva - number 1, then Chambery (though NB flights often get diverted in bad weather) or Lyon for France. And Zurich, Geneva, Salzburg or Innsbruck for Austria and Switzerland. So how do you get the best flight deal? The trick here is to check where you could fly from. For example, if you lived in say, Slough, you have the option of flying from Heathrow and Gatwick of course, but also Southampton and Bristol might also work, and flights can be cheaper from regional airports, not to mention parking.
To check which airlines fly to Geneva from the airports nearest you, go to the destination airport’s Wikipedia page. Eg for Geneva it’s: then scroll down. I do this quickly by using “command F” or “control F” to bring up the search bar, then I type “Southampton” and on the Geneva airport page I can see that both Easyjet and Flybe fly from Southampton to Geneva.
Once I know all the different flight routes that are available to me I can choose which flight is the cheapest, or the best time of day - or whatever else I need, for me. The huge difference between the prices never ceases to amaze me! For example, Gatwick can often be £100 more expensive than Southampton, and yet it might only be a matter of a few pounds - or say an hour’s difference - to travel to Southampton instead of heading to Gatwick.
Skyscanner is a good site to find out the cheapest time to fly while Kayak is the best flight aggregator and it includes baggage fees which is often a big extra cost. When it comes to paying to choose your seats, remember with Easyjet you don’t need to pay extra to sit your family together as they will do that automatically.
And don’t forget flights are only part of the journey. When booking, think about how you get from your house to the airport, then the cost of getting your equipment on the flight (and if you’re carrying skis or snowboards add around £35-45 for a bag each way to the price of your ticket per person), and then you’ll need a transfer the other side from the airport to your accommodation in the ski resort.
So how do you get the best deals here? Well hiring skis in the resort can be a great option, as you’ll save cash from not checking in a ski or snowboard bag. Check with a ski hire company such as Intersport as that will often be cheaper than taking your own skis (especially as you have to buy your own skis or snowboard in the first place…).
To get to the airport in the UK, if you can’t beg a lift through friends or family, consider a coach company such as Megabus or Uber or get your train tickets in advance at If you must drive to the airport use Holiday Extras to book the best deal in advance or use a service such as Just Park where people living near airports cunningly rent out their driveways
For transfers the other side, the best way to get good deals is to sign up to the transfer company newsletters. My favourite companies are CoolBus who often have great late deals, Bens Bus and Ski-Lifts.com Chamonix also now has the fabulous Easybus connection. AlpyBus does a similar thing.

Transfers are also where social media works really well. There are loads of facebook pages where transfers can be shared. This Tarentaise noticeboard is super useful. Or lots of people post about shared transfers on Morzine Crew.

Sometimes a weekend away is exactly what you need to press the reset button and a weekend in the mountains is perfect for that. You won’t need to take a lot of time off work, only really a day, but if you’re super-organised you can get to the resort early in the morning and leave as late as you can to maximise your time on the slopes.
In previous weeks we’ve talked about the savings you can make driving and getting the train to the slopes, but to make a ski weekender work flying is your only option here. And really flying to Geneva is the only option. Or Innsbruck if you’re thinking Austria.
Geneva has multiple flight time options from multiple UK airports. Wikipedia has a full list here of destinations here and Skyscanner is a good site to find out the cheapest time to fly
Now Geneva is blessed with some amazing ski resorts within an hour’s drive or just over. These include Morzine, Flaine, La Clusaz, Les Contamines and Samoens. So, for a weekend trip forget Val d’Isere, Tignes, Courchevel, Les Arcs, St Foy…anything with a longish transfer that will eat into your all-important shred time.
You’ll notice I didn’t mention Chamonix. Now I love Chamonix and it is close to Geneva but in Chamonix’s case that proximity is also a curse as it gets overrun with Geneva residents at the weekend. A problem smaller resorts such as Samoens, and La Clusaz just don’t seem to suffer.
The resorts we’ve mentioned are all fairly snowsure, as that’s especially important for weekenders where slope time is of the essence. Weather to ski has more on the snow reliability of these resorts here. Samoens isn’t mentioned but it links up to Flaine
What to book? You can sometimes find weekend packages with mainstream travel operators and it is worth checking the deal page on Peak Retreats and Ski Weekends
But I find it’s usually cheaper to do it yourself as most chalets and apartments run Saturday to Saturday and the bigger companies can’t make their margins on short breaks. There are some fantastic hostels with great design and friendly local vibes that you can book per night. Hideout Hostel in Morzine has dorm rooms from 34 euros a night Or nearby 1861 Chatel Hostel has double rooms for just £50
And if you’re really set on Chamonix, don’t stay central, stay in nearby Les Houches at Rocky Pop, which has ace rooms from £47 a night plus the slopes in Les Houches should be quieter on a Saturday than they are in Cham too.
Or search the resort you want to stay at on Airbnb or Booking.com the number of Alpine listings on both these sites have gone through the roof in recent years, and there are plenty of big bargains even last minute ones to be had.
