Breathtakingly Scenic Swiss Railway Journey - Across the Albula Line of the Rhaetian Railway!
Time to enjoy a really beautiful and scenic Swiss railway journey…
The Rhaetian Railway (locally known as the Rhätische Bahn), is a railway line in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It is a meter gauge railway line which has many different sections and branches, and in my recent trip I did journeys across 2 of the main sections. In this video you will see the scenes of the journey on board the Inter Regio train service from the town of Chur to the ski resort of St. Moritz as we pass through the famous Albula section.
The train departs from Chur and it is a short double track section till Reichenau-Tamins, where we halt and wait to cross a Glacier Express train (one of the tourist trains that operate on the railway). We then branch off southwards and separate from the line to Disentis. We soon arrive at Thusis, where we enter the Albula section, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there we start winding our way slowly up the Albula Valley. We then stop at Tiefencastel and the views just get more spectacular as we ascend. Soon later comes the world famous Landwasser viaduct which is a high stone arch bridge that curves sharply and enters directly into a tunnel built in a cliff face. The next stop is Filisur where you can see us crossing a train in the other direction bound to Chur. Climbing up again we reach Bergun, where there is a railway museum. Between Bergun and the next stop Preda, is a very interesting alignment. The altitude difference is over 400 meters while the distance between the 2 stations is only 5 km as the crow flies. So to maintain the maximum gradient of only 3.5% the track length was stretched to 12 km as it winds its way around U-turns and through 3 spiral loop tunnels in order to gain altitude. While doing this we cross the valley 4 times. You can see the railway line in all directions as we curve and climb. We stop at Preda which is the highest stop on this section and then enter the 6 km long Albula tunnel under the Albula Pass. After the tunnel it is a short downhill run to the town of Samedan where I ended my journey that day. A couple of days later I boarded another train and continued to St. Moritz, which is just a 10 minutes journey with a halt at the village of Celerina on the way.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful pictures and videos of the stunning Swiss scenery. It was really a lifetime experience and was worth it. A video of another journey on another section of the same railway is also going to be published soon.
PLEASE NOTE : I do not own the music in the video.
Swiss Railways Rhätische Bahn: Arosa - Landwasserviadukt
The train to Arosa climbs to over 2,100 metres to take passengers and goods to their almost inaccessible destinations.
Without the Dutchman Willem Jan Holsboer, the Rhätische Bahn would never have existed. Willem Jan from Holland, forced by the illness of his wife, who suffered tuberculosis, travelled to cleaner climes, where the Swiss railways had not get laid a railway. The area was incredibly beautiful, but too rough for railroad ties. The inclines were too steep, and the viaducts needed, too high. Time here stood still. The area barely changed. But look, now there is a train. Willem Jan pushed on. If the railway authorities don't want to, we'll build the railway ourselves, history quotes him. The Landwasserviaduct is quite a piece.

Rhätische Bahn - AROSA to CHUR by Swiss Train with dji osmo pocket
Rhätische Bahn - AROSA to CHUR by Swiss Train
filmed in April 2019
The 25.68-kilometre (15.96 mi) railway line from Chur to Arosa is known as the Arosabahn (or Arosa-Bahn), and is often abbreviated as ChA (Chur-Arosa). Work began in 1912 on the route and the line opened on 12 December 1914. The railway leads up from Chur to Arosa (a total climb of 1,155 m or 3,789 ft) via a number of tunnels, bridges and other structures, including the Langwieser Viaduct - a structure of national importance. In 1942 the line became part of the RhB company and network; however the line ran on a separate electric system to the remainder of the network until 1997. Before then it was 2400 V DC - now it is 11 kV 16.7 Hz AC. The gauge has always been 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) as per the rest of the RhB network.
It is a single track railway, with the exception of a short double track section along Engadinstrasse in Chur, with a number of passing loops along the route: at all stations with the exception of Chur Stadt (and formerly Sassal), as well as at Chur Sand depot and at Haspelgrube near Arosa. The maximum incline is 6% but there is no rack-and-pinion used.
A short section of the line runs along the streets of Chur and is known as the Chur stadtbahn (town railway). In Chur, the line starts on Bahnhofplatz, in front of the main railway station, where that station's platforms for the Arosabahn are, though there is a second stop in Chur only 760 metres from the main station.
A 5-kilometre tunnel through the Mittenberg had been planned as an alternative route for the lower section of the line, avoiding running through the centre of Chur. This plan was finally dropped in 1996 as the considerable expense could not be justified.
Currently the train service (Regio) R4 provides the passenger service on the line and is shown as timetable 930 in the Swiss national timetables. It is well used by tourists coming to and from the resort at Arosa. The line also carries a substantial amount of freight.

THE RAILWAY WONDER - THE ALBULA RAILWAY
The Albula line between Thusis and St. Moritz in the Swiss canton of Graubuenden is rated by experts as one of the world's technically most demanding tracks.
The absolute climax is the Stretch from Berguen to Preda where the train has to master a climb of 1,350 feet along a distance of just 7.8 miles. The original architects solved the problem with five hairpin bendtunnels, 2 normal tunnels, 9 viaducts and 2 galleries.
We present this fascinating stretch of Swiss mountain railway in all it´s glory. Join us as we ride in the cab in summer and winter along a track whose scenery takes some beating. And last but not least we take our usual trip into the past, to recall the early days of this dream line.
