World's Most Beautiful Railway - The Bernina Express
Shortly after the construction of the Gotthard tunnel, Switzerland pulled off another pioneering achievement: the construction of the Thusis - St. Moritz railway line between 1899 and 1903. This opened the Upper Engadine to tourists. The Rhaetian Railway still passes over the same bridges and through the same loop tunnels. A still greater challenge was the subsequent construction of the Bernina Railway. No other railway in the world overcomes such steep gradients and winds through such steep curves without the help of a cogwheel.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur through the Swiss Alps to Tirano just south of the border between Switzerland and Italy.
The trains passes many bridges, tunnels and mountain villages. The train itself is spacious, clean and convenient. The windows are large and panoramic.
The Bernina Express stops at small villages like Filisur and Bergun where you find the Albula museum.
At the final station, Tirano, you can take the Bernina Bus to Lugano, one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.
Bernina Express to St. Moritz, Switzerland
Known as the Little Red Train, the Bernina Express was built more than 100 years ago to scale the majestic mountain landscapes of the Swiss Alps. This historical feat of engineering still climbs up the 7,330-foot (2,235-meter) high Bernina Pass along a UNESCO World Heritage-listed route. Now the train is electric and quiet, traveling along the winding, scenic uphill climb to St. Moritz.
A day-long outing from Varenna, Italy, we took the train to Tirano, then departed on the Bernina Express to St. Moritz, walked around the lake, had lunch and returned to Tirano. The trip is all about the RIDE and SCENERY -- St. Mortiz itself was pretty lifeless during this early summer, with closed designer shops and construction work after the ski season. I found some interesting dwarfs (from Snow White), that made for a great photo op you'll see.
The lake you see in my video is the BIG attraction along with picturesque surrounding peaks. The train experience is worth the time, especially if you're already in the Lake Como area. Spend some time in Tirano, Italy, where you'll find nice shops, historic markers. Enjoy!
Glacier Express in Winter Snow: From Zermatt to St Moritz (Interrail/Eurail)
Switzerland's famous Glacier Express in Winter Snow. Travelling from Zermatt to St Moritz by train on the Interrail Pass / Eurail Pass. Full details/itinerary here:
We travelled in early January following a stay in the town of Zermatt (next to the famous Matterhorn mountain) when the small station town is still covered in snow and decorated for Christmas. Note, this was part of a wider Interrail/Eurail journey outlined fully here:
The Glacier Express railway train then follows from Zermatt (08:00AM start for us) through many small mountain stations, including Visp, before crossing the snowy mountains of the Alps.
Early attractions include the Oberalppass, which is the highest point of the journey, as well as the Rhine Gorge where the Rhine River passes in the Swiss Alps. Before reaching the next main station at Chur (pronounced Coor). And this is an optional end to the Glacier Express.
However, the best-known attraction is the Landwasser Viaduct, found along the train line between Chur and St Gallen, and it takes roughly 2 hours between these two stations of the railway line.
The Glacier Express takes 8 hours in total from Zermatt to St Moritz (Switzerland) on what is known as the 'World's Slowest Fast Train' where it is a high-speed train, only, given the terrain, it is the world's slowest when going from point A to point B.

Bernina Express: Tirano, Italy - St. Moritz, Switzerland
This is a great train ride with spectacular view all the way. When we got to the top of summit, just wild what we saw. Snow peaked mountains, ice covered summit lakes, skiers skying past the train. Really glad the weather was on our side. Sometimes, It could be a whole trip in the clouds with nothing to look at.
Bernina Express - Wonderful Tour aboard the Little Red Train in the Alps
The Little Red, or the Rätisch Bähnli, is the name given to the Rhaetian Railway. In 2008, the UNESCO awarded the Albula and the Bernina line the status of World Heritage Site. The Bernina Express, which connects Chur (Switzerland) and Tirano (Italy) is very popular with tourists.

The Albula line was constructed between 1898 and 1903. Between Thusis and Preda, the train is able to overcome a 1,200 meters high difference. With 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, the Albula Railway is one of the most impressive narrow gauge railways in the world.
Opened since 1910, the Bernina Railway is, with 2,253 meters, the highest railway crossing in Europe. Onboard, passengers can enjoy natural beauties like the Morteratsch glacier and its milky river, crystal clear waterfalls, the black lake, the Lago Bianco and more.
One of the architectural highlights of the Rhaetian Railway is the Landwasser Viaduct, which is 65 meters high, and the train runs directly from the viaduct into a tunnel in a sheer rock wall.
Interesting facts:
- The highest speed of the Bernina Railway is 60 km/h.
- The Bernina Express is able to negotiate inclines and declines of up to 7%, making the world's steepest railway without cogwheels.

★ Cab ride St. Moritz - Tirano (Bernina pass), Switzerland to Italy [10.2019]
In this video, we look at one of Switzerland's most beautiful and unique railways, the Unesco heritage listed Berninabahn.
The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m), the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%.
A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars.

The Bernina Express is one of the most beautiful train rides that goes through the Swiss Alps, starting in Chur Switzerland and ending in Tirano, Italy. Dare we say that the amazing views and variety of scenery is better than the glacier Express!? This is just a short glimpse of the Bernina Express, going through a tunnel and opening into the valley - it's stunning!

BERNINA EXPRESS (Swiss Vacation part 1) | EP. 43
This is our journey from Oslo to our home away from home St. Moritz. This time we took the Bernina express train from Chur to St. Moritz. What a fantastic piece railway engineering.

A journey through the Swiss Alps on the Bernina Express
On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures.
The railway is unique, blending ideally with the alpine landscapes around the Albula and Bernina Passes. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines of up to 70 per mille with ease. At the highest point being 2,253 metres above sea level ! Isnt it amazing ?
Enjoy the Alpine Panoramas and pass through glaciers.
The Bernina Express - an astonishing rail route in the Swiss Apls.
One of the most scenic train rides in Europe to cross the Swiss Alps. The fabulous Bernina Express is a narrow gauge train with panoramic sightseeing cars travel from Chur & St Moritz in eastern Switzerland south to Tirano, just across the border in northern Italy. The Albula line and the Bernina line on the Bernina Express's route were jointly declared a World Heritage Site in 2008. This train rides through 55 tunnels, 196 bridges, inclines of up to 70 per mille with ease and travels up to 2253 metres above sea level. Any time of year is a good time to travel with the Bernina Express: winter offers beautiful snowy landscapes, the late spring and summer verdant hillside and the autumn colours in October and November are simply spectacular.

SWITZERLAND: Glacier Express - scenic ride through the Alps [HD]
The Glacier Express is a train which connects the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps.
It is not an express in the sense of being a high-speed train but rather in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration travel. In fact it has the reputation of being the slowest express train in the world.
It takes 7,5 hours to journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2,033 m (6,670 ft) in altitude. The entire line is metre gauge (narrow gauge railway).
The Glacier Express is run jointly by two private Swiss railways, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and the Rhätische Bahn (RhB), who also operate the regular local trains and freight trains over the same route.
The panorama cars were introduced in 2006.
I decided to take this trip after I have seen a scene of the Glacier Express in the IMAX documentary film The Alps.
