Diehl for Senate: Scituate Fishing
Scituate, MA … Today, Representative Geoff Diehl, the endorsed Republican candidate for United States Senate, announced his plan to help the Massachusetts fishing industry.
“Massachusetts has a long and proud history of fishing. It is crucial to our economy. Unfortunately, our fishing industry is under attack. Fishermen need and deserve a full time Senator who will work to revive and protect the industry. Today I am pleased to announce my plan to help our fishermen who play a vital role in the food supply. This plan will provide them with the regulatory relief and re-open fishing grounds while protecting the environment,” said Diehl.
The Diehl plan calls for keeping New Bedford licenses within that community, repealing monument status that has closed vital fishing areas, and developing common sense regulations to ensure the protection of marine life.
“Two weeks ago Warren said she was “just getting started.” Did that mean for President? On Saturday, Warren is proving that she cannot focus on Massachusetts for an entire month by flying off to Reno. It is time for a Massachusetts first Senator. The Commonwealth has been neglected for long enough, especially our fishermen,” said Diehl.
In 2009, Massachusetts fishermen supported over 83,000 jobs statewide. The New Bedford fishing fleet brings in $369 million.
“Contrary to popular rhetoric, fishermen are staunch supporters of ocean preservation. Their livelihood depends on a vibrant stock of fish. While there are a few bad apples, I am happy to defend these hard workers that supply food for us. For far too long, Senator Warren has ignored their needs,” said Diehl.
Diehl supports equipping commercial fishing vessels with GPS monitors to ensure that they stay within designated fishing grounds and instituting dock monitors on fish counts. These initiatives will protect marine life while reducing costly on-board monitoring.
Diehl has traveled repeatedly to Gloucester, New Bedford and Scituate to meet with fishermen to hear their concerns directly. He also traveled to Scituate and Marshfield to review the storm damage this past winter.
“We need to revive our fishing industry. We need to make healthcare affordable and accessible. And we need to keep our economy growing. To accomplish all of this and more, it will take a full time Senator,” said Diehl. “There will be no book deals for me. There will be no running around the country to build a national profile for higher office. In the great words of Bill Belichick—I will do my job.”
