Bethlehem: American Utopia, American Tragedy | Seth Moglen
Seth Moglen, Associate Professor of English and Co-Director of the South Side Initiative, Lehigh University; Member (2009-10), School of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study
April 28, 2010
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was founded by the Moravians in the 1740s as a utopian religious community. At the turn of the twentieth century, it became one of the iconic steel towns of industrial America, a destination for working-class immigrants from dozens of countries and the producer of steel for a century of skyscrapers and battleships. At the turn of the twenty-first century, it underwent the familiar fate of deindustrialization, as steel production and an entire way of life came to an end. Today, a casino has been built on the ruins of the Bethlehem Steel site, as the city seeks to remake itself as a tourist and entertainment destination. In its three main phases—as eighteenth-century city on the hill, as industrial steel town, and as postindustrial brownfield and casino development—Bethlehem stands as a microcosm of America itself, revealing salient features of the nation's development. In this talk to the Friends of the Institute for Advanced Study, Seth Moglen discusses the structures of power that have shaped the city of Bethlehem as well as the aspirations that have emerged in response to them. A member of the 2009--10 School of Social Science Dewey Seminar on education, schools, and the state, Moglen also argues that universities have a distinctive role to play as engines of democracy in postindustrial America.

Bethlehem Steel Stacks, Bethlehem PA.
Abandoned Bethlehem Steel Stacks in Pennsylvania, now defunct, stands testimony to once a giant that hired over 300,000 employees and reigned for over 140 years... The plant churned up one ship a day during the height of world war II.
Rising costs and low profits including higher pension for retirees is what forced it to file for bankruptcy.

A little Drone 101, some important flight safety rules and regulations...
Buying a drone? Well hold up, not so fast just yet lol...
A few things here to consider...
I'll tell you It's not easy flyin' that thing up there!...
GPS and compass not properly calibrated? and you will lose it!...can't land before the battery depletes? You will crash...or better be ready for some drone hunting or water landings ????
One crash and you are done!
And with all the wind and weather.... which you don't see in the videos .... Drone can have violent reactions to high wind velocity and weather!. Wishy washy shakin' all over! It can be unstable and scary, even with mild winds at takeoff, but the higher you go the more you encounter wind!
Not to mention multiple permissions involved including from FAA and Air Traffic Controllers!!! You are required by law to call them and submit a flight plan that includes your height, distance, when and where, and bearings.
You have to observe any local municipality and township ordinances as well as deal with any sorts of restricted airspace and trespassing laws or you are in violation of federal laws and rules and regulations.
by the way... your flight status and flight record is internally recorded on your drone for later scrutiny by the feds in case you are having any thoughts of violating flight safety rules!...
Police permissions are separate!
You have to follow so many rules and regulations, in the end, you will feel like a Pilot!
it's Federal laws now. Part 107 , section 336 and others.. otherwise you are risking lives in commercial aviation not to mention people, cars and residential areas on the ground!
Too much to follow just for a few seconds of drone flight! Not for the weak of heart!
And of course aircraft registration with the Federal Aviation Authority is separate!
For commercial videos and photography, thousands of dollars are on the line everytime you go up!
And then.... you have to deal with the people wanting to shoot down your drones..lol.. so I am very careful and cautious and get all kinds of permissions BEFORE I fly..... so as to not to disturb anyone with noise levels ( drones can easily be as loud as a lawn mower or more!) or invade their privacy in any manner!...
But.. it IS a LOT of fun! being able to go to places or fly over scenery you would've never thought of or have a chance to be able to go otherwise! AND it gives your photos and videos a totally new perspective!.... things you cannot even pre- compose or imagine unless you are up there! ...so for me ... it is totally WORTH the trouble...EXPENSIVE HOBBY though!
n' I freakin LOVE it!!!
The flexibility it gives you is unrivaled! You feel invincible! middle of corn fields anywhere you go you can quickly just stop and take your shots! Like no one else has ever seen before!
And so far with all the droaning I've done I have locked my drone at 7 miles per hour no more than that with limitations to distance and altitude!
Once I get better at it I will start unlocking those things as it can fly up to 70 miles an hour!
Drones can be awesome and a lot of fun to fly when when you are following rules and regulation.
Even with height restrictions at around 400 meters (roughly 1368 feet) for most of the United States, checking out the height of Eiffel Tower is 982 ft you are allowed to go up to 1368 ft which is freakin' awesome!...
Bethlehem steel stacks are about 282 feet in height... you see me going up to about 300 feet here.
Flying drones can be disorienting, to say the least...as you can quickly lose sight of it against the backlit horizon ( hence the keep within line-of-sight rule!) and in the sun you can't really see the screen on your controller you need both hands at all times on the controls or use a screen guard I couldn't even cover my screen to be able to see it properly..
Well anyhow these are things one has to observe and practice.
Now if you still want to fly one, fly responsibly, use common sense judgement and good luck, be safe and have lots of fun! ????????????????????????????.

Bethlehem Steel Corporation - Bethlehem, PA Plant
This video is a small tour of the now-abandoned Bethlehem Steel Corporation's flagship facility in Bethlehem, PA. Although large portions of the site are in the process of being redeveloped, much of the abandoned past remains. This plant is significant in engineering history, because the steel for the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam, and the Empire State Building (among other great 20th Century landmarks) was made here...

(pt#1) A Visit to Bethlehem,Pa {Blast Furnace} w/my son
A little bit of History--Bethlehem,Pa ( Blast Furnace )at Bethlehem Steel--Bethlehem Steel Corporation was America's second-largest steel producer and largest shipbuilder--
After a decline in the American steel industry and other problems leading to the company's bankruptcy in 2001,the company was dissoved and the remaining assets sold to International Steel Group in 2003. In 2005, ISG merged with Mittal Steel, ending American ownership of the assets of Bethlehem Steel....
Their demise is often cited as one of the most prominent examples of the U.S. economy's shift away from industrial manufacturing, its failure to compete with cheap foreign labor, and management's penchant for short-term profits...

Martin Tower Implosion 2019 Bethlehem, PA [Drone Footage]
Martin Tower implosion:
Most of what’s left of the Tower is now mostly steel and concrete as all interior demolition measures have already been completed. The demolition of Martin Tower has been a carefully orchestrated process.
[Click]
Steps have been taken to ensure the controlled implosion is handled properly:
+ Asbestos remediation has already been completed. Additionally, an independent third-party will test the air quality levels before, during and after the implosion.
+ The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be on hand during the demolition.
+ The implosion is scheduled for the early morning hours.
+ Areas are being set up for public viewing. While some areas will be restricted.
+ A map will indicate street closures and restricted areas.
+ Drones are not allowed from 6:00 am - 8:00 am. Flight restrictions are within a 2,500 foot ceiling and a one-half mile radius.
About the demolition, Robert Donchez, Mayor of Bethlehem stated, “While we acknowledge the nostalgia associated with Martin Tower, the definitive plan to demolish the tower, and redevelop the 53-acre site, provides the opportunity for new jobs and new opportunities on that site.
Timeline for the Implosion:
5:00 am Bethlehem Police will block Eighth Avenue from Bradford Street to Union Boulevard; Easton Avenue from Ralston Road to Elizabeth Avenue; and Route 378 North and South at the exit ramps for Eighth Avenue.
6:00 am An exclusion zone surrounding the Tower site will be blocked off to the public.
6:30 am Bethlehem Police will close off Route 378. This will extend from Catasauqua Road through the Main Street ramp.
7:00 am Martin Tower is scheduled to be demolished by an implosion.
7:10 am Teams will make an assessment on opening the area roadways and the planned clean-up activities.
Mid-Morning This is the estimated time for the exclusion zone area to be lifted. Public right of way will also be open again.
This History of the Martin Tower:
1857 - 1960s
Bethlehem Steel was founded in 1857 as the “Bethlehem Iron Company” or “Bethlehem Iron Works”. “Bethlehem Steel Corporation” began in 1904 while “Bethlehem Steel Company” started in 1901. The latter would work with the former after 1904. And Bethlehem Steel Company eventually merged into Bethlehem Steel Corporation by the 1960s.
Bethlehem Steel was once the second largest steel manufacturer in the U.S. It provided steel for warships and bridges and helped with the subsequent skyscraper boom. Bethlehem Steel had projects all over the United States. There was the pristine Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the world famous Empire State Building. And, the Baltimore Beltway or the Walt Whitman Bridge. And, then there was the plan to build the Martin Tower in Bethlehem, PA.
Bethlehem Steel had outgrown a main office area adjacent to their plant. Instead of adding to office locations they already had around the city, they consolidated into one location. They chose Eighth Avenue and Eaton Avenue in Bethlehem. This was 2-miles away from their blast furnaces. The land was acquired in 1957 and while envisioning an office district, they started with a smaller office building, a print shop and a tower.

In 1982, Bethlehem reported a loss of US$1.5 billion and shut down many of its operations. ... At the end of 1995, it closed steel-making at the main Bethlehem plant. After roughly 140 years of metal production at its Bethlehem, Pennsylvania plant, Bethlehem Steel Corporation ceased its Bethlehem operations. What used to be the site of Bethlehem Steel now regularly leads the state’s 12 casinos in table games revenue and typically only trails Parx Casino in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, in total gambling revenue.
