Hanging Temple of Hengshan - Datong, China
The magnificent, gravity defying Hanging Temple is one of the world's forgotten wonders. Clinging to a crag of Hengshan mountain the temple consists of 40 rooms linked by a dizzying maze of narrow passageways.
The temple was constructed by drilling holes into the cliffs side into which oak crossbeams and oak poles hold up the temple. The main supportive structure is hidden inside the bedrock.
The monastery is located in the small canyon basin, and the body of the building hangs from the middle of the cliff under the prominent summit, protecting the temple from rain, erosion and sunlight.
Interestingly the temple is dedicated to not just one religion, but three, with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all practiced within the temple and represented in 78 statues and carvings throughout the temple.
The Hanging Temple is also know as the Hanging Monastery or Xuankong, it's located about 60 km southwest of Datong, China in Shanxi province. The temple is said to have been built by a monk named Liao Ran during the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD) and restored in 1900.
The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2010, it was listed in 'Time Magazine' as the world's top ten most odd dangerous buildings.

Chinese city area in Shanghai
The Old City of Shanghai (Chinese: 上海老城厢; pinyin: Shànghăi Lăo Chéngxiāng), also formerly known as the Chinese city, is the traditional urban core of Shanghai, China. Its boundary was formerly defined by a defensive wall. The Old City was the county seat for the old county of Shanghai. With the advent of foreign concessions in Shanghai, the Old City became just one part of Shanghai's urban core but continued for decades to be the seat of the Chinese authority in Shanghai.

The Pauline and Joseph Degenfelder Lecture 2019: Caves of Dunhuang
The spectacular Buddhist caves of Dunhuang, on the Silk Road in the Gobi Desert in northwest China, are a UNESCO World Heritage site. This lecture presents the sites’ sculptures and wall paintings, among the finest and earliest examples of Buddhist art in China. Used by Buddhist monks since the AD 300s, the caves were the focus of worship and cultural interaction for thousands of years; they also served as a rich repository for precious art treasures and manuscripts that were rediscovered in the early 1900s. Dr. Mimi Gardner Gates, president of the American Friends of the Dunhuang Foundation, addresses the challenges of preserving the site today, as undertaken by the Dunhuang Academy in collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles.
