Global News BC - Giant tree nicknamed 'Big Lonely Doug' stands alone in clear-cut
An ancient giant that has been discovered in a logging clearcut area on southern Vancouver Island could be the second largest Douglas fir tree in Canada.
The tree that was named Big Lonely Doug was found standing alone among dozens of giant stumps in a 20-hectare clearcut area that was logged two years ago near Port Renfrew.
Preliminary measurements of the tree found it stands 69 meters (226 feet) tall, nearly twice the size of the B.C. Legislature building (130 feet).
It also measures 12 meters (39 feet) in circumference and four meters (13 feet) in diameter.
Official measurements will be made next month by the Ministry of Forests.
The Big Lonely Doug grows in the Gordon River Valley on southern Vancouver Island, known as the Tall Trees Capital of Canada.
It comes in second behind the world's largest Douglas fir, the Red Creek Fir, located just 20 kilometers to the east of Big Lonely Doug in the San Juan River Valley.
It has been measured to be 13.28 meters (44 feet) in circumference or 4.3 meters (14 feet) in diameter, and 73.8 meters (242 feet) tall.
It is pretty incredible that Port Renfrew is becoming known as the big trees capital of Canada, says TJ Watt with the Ancient Forest Alliance, an organization that works to protect endangered, old-growth trees in B.C.
It is estimated Big Lonely Doug is around a thousand years old.
Watt says Big Lonely Doug's longevity could be explained by the fact it is growing in a prime spot at the valley bottom alongside the river.
But its largest branch was torn off in a storm just a few weeks ago.
Whereas before, it would have been sheltered in the woods, says Watt.
Activists with the Ancient Forest Alliance say provincial government should do more to protect the province's biggest trees.
There is an urgency to protect these areas because old-growth logging continues right near Port Renfrew, says Watt.
The organization has been calling for provincial legislation to protect big trees and monumental groves.
This tree could receive some special recognition, but ideally we would be finding them and protecting them before they are left alone in a clearcut, says Watt.

Avatar Grove in Port Renfrew, BC
Over the May long weekend, 2010, after hearing many people talk about this new found grove of old and very large trees that are slated to be logged, we decided to check it out ourselves.
We started from Muir Creek located about 15 minutes west of Sooke and then proceeded towards Port Renfrew. The instructions we had were pretty clear how to get there, so we had no problems finding it.
We did have a hard time getting through the forest though since Mrs. DiscoverSooke is 8 months pregnant, so we just stayed to the lower part of the grove.
It doesn't matter what your stand is on the logging industry, it should just go without saying that trees this old and this size should remain standing.
After we spent an hour in the forest, we decided that we would head back to Sooke by taking the Pacific Marine Circle route through Duncan and Cowichan Bay.
The Avatar Grove and Canada's Gnarliest Tree!
***NOTE: The Avatar Grove is now protected as of 2012 (this video clip was made in 2011) BUT most of our old-growth forests are endangered. Sign the petition: AncientForestPetition.com THANKS to the tens of thousands of people who wrote letters, signed petitions, and rallied to save the Avatar Grove! At the time of the making of this video in 2011, the Avatar Grove was still slated to fall - but a broad-based campaign led by the Ancient Forest Alliance (AncientForestAlliance.org) and joined by our allies in the Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce, resulted in the area's protection in early 2012. Searching for the tallest tree in Canada Part 3
We go for a third attempt to find the Carmanah Giant (aka Canada's tallest tree).
With the hight of 96 meters, or 315 feet, this Sitka Spruce could possibly be the world's tallest tree of its kind. Hidden deep in the untouched, wild old growth forest on Vancouver Island, we hope If to find it we find it and take some great footage with our GoPro, Sony A6300 and DJI drone.

Botanical Beach - Port Renfrew, British Columbia
Botanical Beach is one of those places that really amaze its visitors. About a 90 minute drive from Sooke, accessible off Highway 14, Botanical Beach Provincial Park is a natural wonder known for its intertidal zone and crystal clear tide pools that are home to many fascinating marine species. The beach is about a 15 minute walk from the public pay parking lot, and is equipped with toilets and picnic tables. This Class A provincial park is the perfect day-trip from Sooke or Victoria.
Botanical Beach also features many geological marvels, such as its ridges of shale and quartz that marble through the black basalt, producing some of the most picturesque terrain. Youll want to bring the camera on this excursion.
Botanical Beach StarfishLow tide, about 4 feet or less, offers the best viewing opportunities of the many organisms that inhabit the shoreline and tide pools at Botanical Beach. Youll come across sea urchins, starfish, chitons and anemones, as well as mussels, barnacles, and snails of all sorts. Click here to see Tide Chart for Botanical Beach
When exploring at Botanical Beach, its important to keep an eye on the ocean, for two reasons:
1. The waves and tide at Botanical Beach can be unpredictable; unexpectedly strong and large. Small children, pets and even adults can easily be swept off the slick rocks.
2. You never know when you might see Grey whales, Orcas, Harbor Seals, or California and Northern Sealions swimming or feeding along the shoreline.
Located just past Port Renfrew, the excellent trails of Botanical Beach also attract hikers from around the world. The park features trails of all difficulty levels, including the Mill Bay, Botany Bay, and Shoreline trails; as well, Botanical Beach is the northern trailhead of the renowned West Coast Trail.
