Bijli Mahadev is one of the sacred temples of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of about 2,460m[1] in the Kullu Valley. Bijli Mahadev is one of the excellent temples in India. Located 22 km from Kullu across the Beas river, it can be approached by a rewarding trek of 3 km.

A panoramic view of Kullu and Paravati valleys can be seen from the temple. The 60 feet high staff of Bijli Mahadev temple glistens like a silver needle in the sun.

In this temple of lightning, it is said that the tall staff attracts the divine blessings in the form of lightning. It is believed that the priest of the temple has to restore the Shiva linga placed inside the temple using butter and sattoo after every lightning as it shatters to pieces with flash of lightning.

Bijli Mahadev is one of the ancient temples in India. Located 22 km from Kullu across the Beas river, it can be approached by a rewarding trek of 3 km.

A panoramic view of Kullu and Paravati valleys can be seen from the temple. The 60 feet high staff of Bijli Mahadev temple glistens like a silver needle in the sun.

In this temple of lightning, it is said that the tall staff attracts the divine blessings in the form of lightning.

Lightning incidents occur like one in 12 years. Shivalinga is coated with butter by priest.

Bijli Mahadev Temple Kullu Manali via Jana waterfall | Off road bike route

Bijli Mahadev Temple is at a distance of 6 kms from kullu and 59 kms from Manali. Bijli means lightning in English, It is observed that after every few years lightning falls on the shivling, it breaks into pieces, then it is reconstructed.

During the lightning or fall of Bijli on shivling, there is no damage done to the walls of the temple.

This is a unique Shivling of Bhole nath - God Shiva, one of its kind situated in Himachal Pradesh, India. There are three approaches to reach Bijli Mahadev Temple..

Trek from Manali or Kullu - Different options available, consult at trekking agency.

Stairs from kullu - Climb distance of 2.5 kms to reach this temple, it can take about 2 hours at an average walking speed with some rest in between.

Go on motorbike or car: This is a offroad track we followed. To follow this route, you need to travel through Naggar. We followed this route to reach Bijli Mahadev temple.

Distance from Manali to Naggar: 20 kms, approx 1 hour to travel this distance

Distance from Naggar to Jana waterfall: 16 kms. Approx - 40 minutes to travel this distance.

Distance from Jana waterfall to Bijli Mahadev: 16 kms , approx 2 hours to travel this distance on motor bike.

Quality of road: From Manali to Jana waterfall road is good, barring few patches of rough road, which is fine. But after Jana waterfall there is no road. It’s a rough travel track that is built by default by Motorbikes or Gypsies running on that route.

As shown in this video, track is completely off road, wet mud can make your vehicle skid, there are stones on the way, pieces of rock that makes the terrain tough for bikers.

Important safety instructions if traveling to Bijli Mahadev on your car or Motorbike:

Taking a heavy motor cycle may not help because if it skids, you will find it difficult to handle in mud. Go for a motor bike that is fit for off road travel, like Himalaya or Impulse, you can get bikes on rent in Manali and kullu.

If you wish to travel by car, prefer Gypsy, this is a complete off track route, other vehicles which are lighter may not be able to run through such tough terrain.

2. When to travel: If you are going to Bijli Mahadev through stairs then you can go there anytime of the year, carry rain coats if travelling during July to August.

If you are travelling on motor bike or Gypsy - Avoid rain season, track becomes slippers, tyre of the vehicle may get blocked in the mud, that can make it difficult to drive.

3. Time to travel: Start early morning, if possible reach Jana waterfall by 7 am, have breakfast there at - Mani ram ji ka Dhaba - He servers Himachal local food there. You should start your trek or motor bike ride by 7.30 am from Jana waterfall. Try to reach back by 5 pm.

There is no electricity, no village on the way to Bijli Mahadev, especially on this track, so be careful that you come back to Jana waterfall on time.

If you are traveling to Kullu or Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Then i will strongly suggest you to visit Bijli Mahadev temple, You will love the scenic beauty of this place. Temple is located at a height of 8000 feet.

Bijli Mahadev is located near Kullu (head quarters of Kullu district) in Himachal Pradesh state of India. This is a hill station located at a height of 7500ft. The name of the hill where Bijli Mahadev temple is situated is called Mathan and is surrounded by Parbati, Garsa, Bhunter and Kullu valleys. There is a Shiva temple on top of the hill. There is a small village just down below the temple and the name of the village is also called Bijli Mahadev. People in this village take care of the maintenance aspects of the temple.

Bijli Mahadev also Know as Makkhan Mahadev A holly place situated at 9000 feet above in kullu disctrict of Himachal state. This place dedicated to Lord Shiva. I have felt that this is one of the best place for trekking in winter as well as summer located in Himachal.

This place is full of mystery and miracles. The name comes from the fact that, the lightening (Bijli) strikes the Shiva linga inside the temple and breaks into pieces. The Shiva ling (Mahadev) will be joined together and installed in a special occasion using a locally made adhesive. One can witness the charred part (especially on the walls) inside the temple which is due to the flames resulted during lightning.

बिजली महादेव मंदिर, ब्यास नदी के किनारे, कुल्लू का एक लोकप्रिय तीर्थ स्थल, मनाली के निकट स्थित है। हिंदुओं के विनाश के देवता, शिव, को समर्पित, यह जगह समुद्र स्तर 2450 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। यह मंदिर पहाड़ी, भारत के उत्तर में हिमालय की तलहटी में रहने वाले लोगों के समूहों की एक व्यापक सामान्यीकरण, स्थापत्य शैली का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है, अपने 60 फुट लंबा स्तंभ के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।स्थानीय विश्वास के अनुसार, मंदिर के अंदर रखी मूर्ति शिव का प्रतीक 'शिवलिंग', बिजली की वजह से कई टुकड़े में टूट गया था। बाद में, मंदिर के पुजारियों के टुकड़े एकत्र किये और उन्हें मक्खन की मदद के साथ वापस जोड़ दिया।
शिवलिंग के हिस्से जोड़ने का यह समारोह प्रतिवर्ष मनाया जाता है। इस मंदिर की यात्रा की योजना बना पर्यटकों के लिए यह एक कठिन चढ़ाई वाला रास्ता है जहाँ बगल में देवदार के पेड़ रहते हैं। मंदिर से पार्वती और कुल्लू घाटियों के सुंदर दृश्यों को देखा जा सकता है।

भगवन शिव के भारत में कुछ ऐसे मंदिर हैं जिनके चमत्कार आज भी रहस्य बने हुए हैं। इन्हीं में से एक है हिमाचल प्रदेश के कुल्लू में स्थित बिजली महादेव। कुल्लू शहर में ब्यास और पार्वती नदी के संगम के पास एक ऊंचे पर्वत के ऊपर बिजली महादेव का प्राचीन मंदिर है। मान्यताओं के अनुसार जिस स्थान पर मंदिर है वहां शिवलिंग पर हर बारह साल में आकाश से भयंकर बिजली गिरती है। कुल्लू घाटी की मान्यताओं के अनुसार यह घाटी एक विशालकाय सांप का रूप है। इस सांप का वध भगवान शिव ने किया था। जिस स्थान पर मंदिर है वहां शिवलिंग पर हर बारह साल में भयंकर आकाशीय बिजली गिरती है। बिजली गिरने से मंदिर का शिवलिंग खंडित हो जाता है। यहां के पुजारी खंडित शिवलिंग के टुकड़े एकत्रित कर मक्खन के साथ इसे जोड़ देते हैं। कुछ ही माह बाद शिवलिंग एक ठोस रूप में परिवर्तित हो जाते हैं। कुछ समय बाद पिंडी अपने पुराने स्वरूप में आ जाती है।
