Biosphere 2 - Oracle Arizona
Biosphere 2 is an American Earth system science research facility located in Oracle, Arizona. It has been owned by the University of Arizona since 2011. Its mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching, and lifelong learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe. It is a 3.14-acre (1.27-hectare) structure originally built to be an artificial, materially closed ecological system, or vivarium. It remains the largest closed system ever created.
Biosphere 2 was only used twice for its original intended purposes as a closed-system experiment: once from 1991 to 1993, and the second time from March to September 1994. Both attempts, though heavily publicized, ran into problems including low amounts of food and oxygen, die-offs of many animals and plants included in the experiment (though this was anticipated since the project used a strategy of deliberately species-packing anticipating losses as the biomes developed), group dynamic tensions among the resident crew, outside politics and a power struggle over management and direction of the project.

Biosphere 2 at the University of Arizona
(11/3/12) In this segment Oklahoma Gardening Host Kim Toscano visits with John Adams, Assistant Director of Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona. Biosphere 2 serves as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe. Also during this visit, Dr. Joost van Haren, Assistant Research Specialist at the Biosphere, shares a close look at his research inside the rainforest habitat in Biosphere 2.

Biosphere 2: University of Arizona's Eco-Living Experiment
Eco-living is a popular buzzword these days, but few people actually live up to the mission. In his latest radio interview, Peter Greenberg sits down with Matt Adamson, educator and outreach coordinator at the University of Arizona Biosphere 2, to get a better understanding of the goal of his program.
Biosphere 2 is rooted in studying the southwestern United States, where experts are able to measure how the local water and energy resources have been impacted by climate changes. Watch Adamson share with Peter the behind-the-scenes details of his work educating the public on the Biosphere 2's findings and lobbying for policy change. For more, visit
Biosphere 2 - A Short Film
Biosphere 2 is a truly unique experience which is ran by the University of Arizona. This building provides an enclosed environment to study the effects of humans on our world. If you find yourself in southern Arizona, be sure to spend a day at this beautiful attraction.
Inside the dome are simulated environments, such as deserts, rain forests, the ocean, and even a giant lung (my favorite) to keep the whole place from imploding.
I'm still mad they killed all their coral. Hopefully they find a way to revive it in the upcoming years! We may be one step closer to reviving our coral reefs around the globe!

Inside a Biosphere 2 Lung
2 of these lungs are attached to the domes via air tunnels.
4 tons of rubber and 16 tons of aluminum held up with air pressure alone keeps the Biosphere 2 from exploding every day and imploding every night. Open the hatch to leave and the 20 ton plunger forces air out with you.

This is a educational video documenting the mom and pop motels, restaurants, and tourist attractions that once lined US 1 (Dixie Highway) in Nassau County, FLA, from the 1930s to the 1970s. It was made only as a vehicle to highlight and preserve this once important industry of our area. The West Nassau Historical Society does not own any of the copyrights of any of the materials used other than the video of the business and locations as they appear today. The version of the video is without sound. The video with sound is played inside our West Nassau Museum of Local History inside the historic Callahan Train Depot in Callahan, Nassau County FLA. [Wikipedia] Theater of All Possibilities
Theater of All Possibilities was an artistic practice network and touring theater founded in 1967 in San Francisco by John Allen, Kathelin Gray and Marie Harding. The group worked with collaborators from the sciences, technology, history, and ecology, with the Institute of Ecotechnics as a partner organization on many projects.
The Theater of All Possibilities network was based at Synergia Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico from 1969–1980 and again from 2000–2010. Other studios within the network included: Studio 3, the Blue Planet Ensemble, based on the Research Vessel Heraclitus; Studio 6, based at the October Gallery in London; Studio 7, based at the Naga Theatre at the Hotel Vajra in Kathmandu; and Studio 10, which operated until 1994 at the Biosphere 2 laboratory in Oracle, Arizona. An ensemble from the Theater of All Possibilities toured domestically and internationally from 1968 to 1989. A 1972 18-month world tour by the ensemble Caravan from Dramaturgia included a performance at Ellen Stewart's La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village, Manhattan, New York City. The Caravan from Dramaturgia presented two pieces at La MaMa, Tamarand and The Caravan, on October 4, 5, 6, and 7. A promotional flyer for the production reads: Every day we make up and wipe out our sets.Theater of All Possibilities extended their practice into contributing to the founding of multiple ecological and cultural demonstration and performance projects. These projects included performances in the Australian Outback, the Peruvian Amazon, and the sacred forest in Osogbo, as well as traditional theater spaces.
The network was formally disbanded in 2009/2010. Allen and Gray subsequently formed the performance research initiative Theatre for the Reconstitution of Reality (THEATRRR), also based in New Mexico.

3. Lungs
Pressure fluctuations that occur in an airtight rigid enclosure must be properly understood and dealt with. As temperature rises and falls, expansion and contraction of the contained gases tend to explode or implode the enclosure. Variations of internal humidity are actually variations of the amount of gas contained (water
vapor) and likewise contribute to pressure fluctuations. Thirdly, variations in external barometric pressure create positive and negative differential pressures between the inside and outside. Allowance must be made for these three factors to combine in the most extreme ways. If Biosphere 2 were a fixed volume structure,
the estimated pressure variations would be about 95000 Pa (90.7 psi). These are far greater pressures than the structure could withstand. Furthermore, even if Biosphere 2 were built strong enough not to explode or implode, the leak rate would be greatly increased as the substantial pressure variations alternately drove
air in and out through any small holes. To avoid both of these undesirable consequences, Biosphere 2 has two expansion
chambers, called ‘lungs’. Each lung is a cylindrical tank with a flexible membrane covering and sealing the top. As air in Biosphere 2 expands, the membranes rise, and as the air contracts the membranes fall. The membranes are weighted and their weight resting on the enclosed air provides the slight pressure of about 150 Pa previously described. The combined expansion capacity of both lungs is about 43 000 m3 serving a fixed air volume of about 140 000 m3, or about 30%. The lungs themselves are enclosed by weathercover domes which we may describe as ‘air resistant’, or nearly airtight. By operation of a moderate sized blower, the
space under each dome can be reduced in atmospheric pressure just enough to neutralize the weight of the membrane by upward suction. In this state, the pressure differential between the inside and outside of Biosphere 2 becomes zero or as small as the accuracy of the blower control system will permit. Now there is no longer a driving pressure forcing leakage in either direction. The lungs are the enabling technology that permitted achievement of the low leakage rate of about 10%:year.
