Bird Rookery Swamp Trails Bike Ride - Naples, Fl
Today I went for a ride at Bird Rookery Swamp Trails. Needless to say I didn't find it that enjoyable. I would only recommend coming here with a partner as you can and probably will come face to face with nature. On this particular ride I saw over 10 alligators and at least 7 were with in 4-6 feet of me. Besides the run ins with nature the trails were flat, long, and boring.
Turtle Rescued from Gator - CREW Bird Rookery Swamp Naples, FL
After seeing a large gator walk away and slink into the water next to the path, we came upon this upside down turtle. I think that when the gator saw us coming it set its turtle-lunch down and walked away to avoid us.
The turtle was fine, no teeth marks, just scared. It wasn't there when we came back through, so it either got away or was reintroduced into the circle of life.

This was a lovely park in Naples, Florida and the nature and gators were everywhere. But nothing will take your breath away like walking right past the 13 foot alligator sunbathing on the trail within three feet of you. What a majestic creature.

Hiking in Florida - CREW Bird Rookery Swamp Trail - 12 Miles - September 2014
Things to do in Naples, FL. This hiking trail gets pretty close to the wildlife, especially getting past mile 3. This hike was at the height of rainy season in SW Florida and the water was up to the edge of the trail, and in some cases over the trail.
Round trip the trail is almost 12 miles and took about 7 hours. There were some issues along the way, but I was able to get past them without losing a limb.

Bird Rookery Swamp Trail
Some images at the start of the 12 mile Bird Rookery Swamp Trail near Naples, Florida. The two videos are before we even got on the trail. The gator looks to be about 5 years old but did not give ground when I approached. Instead he did his intimidation thing by loudly exhaling. I want to go back soon and do the whole trail.
Biking the CREW Bird Rookery Swamp Trail gator passing.
We made it past the first big gator on the trail! This one wouldnt move. It took us 20 mins to build up the couage to pass it! I would estimate it was between 8-10ft long.

How To Share a Hiking Trail with Alligators
This took place at CREW Bird Rookery Swamp. Naples, FL towards Corkscrew Sanctuary. It is a trail that is in the middle of a swamp. This footage was on a 12 mile hike. These alligators sun on the trail and some don't seem to be bothered much by passers by. This was taken in the summer when the water is up high close to the trail. I would suspect that there are many gators in the winter time, when the water becomes more scarce. We will just have to see. The old logging trams and spurs were turned into a hiking trail. These trams were used to log the cypress out of the swamps in this area many years ago.
