According to a statement by UNESCO the site was recognized as a World Heritage Site for its unique exposition of an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries which is the criterion number four for such recognition.

These wild turtles in Hikkaduwa are completely free and they have been known to visit a certain point of the shore to feed on the seaweed and lay their eggs for many years.
There are conservation workers that hangs around the rocky area helping tourists gather seaweed, for those that want to feed the turtles, and to make sure nobody is touching or mistreating the animals.
There are also many turtle hatcheries around Hikkaduwa Beach and the under water world is one of the towns main tourism points.

Galle Fort Jumpers :
Galle Fort jumping off the ancient citadel walls started in the early 90s and it is the world's equivalent to the bungee jump only a lot more dangerous, because the guys don't even use an elasticized rope to pull you back from the near death experience, or a totally clear landing point. This hair rising jump off the walls is based on the Fort Ramparts at the top of the wall known as Flag Rock between Point Utrecht Bastion and Triton Bastion.

HILARIOUS Sri Lankan Dudes at Galle Fort Beach. ????????
Galle is only a $1 and 2 hour train ride, making it the perfect day trip from Colombo. The fort was created by the Portuguese and then built up by the Dutch back in Sri Lanka's colonial past. It's now a bit of a tourist trap with overpriced restaurants and shops selling handicrafts, but the fort walls themselves are beautiful and you can walk on top of them all the way around the city. There's also some beach areas where the water is very clean and it's not crowded with tourists. I went for a swim and ended up chatting to some friendly locals.
Outside of the fort is where I went to eat as recommended by the locals. The food is more authentic and less costly than inside the fort walls.
