92 - Cheating on Starry Horizons in the Ningaloo Reef
We love our boat, we really do. But she was over on the East Coast of Australia and we wanted to go sailing on Ningaloo Reef on the West Coast. What to do? What to do?
It was a tough choice (not really), but we hopped on a 3 night dive charter aboard Shore Thing with Sail Ningaloo. And had an absolute blast. The diving was spectacular, the reef was one of the best we'd seen and the best part? We were on a boat without having to do any of the work! Does life get any better???
But being aboard another boat did make us miss our girl and the trip to Ningaloo Reef meant that our travel adventure around Australia was just about at an end. We did a short trip up to Exmouth to attempt to swim with whale sharks and then another short one down to Perth to see some Quokkas.
And then it was time to go home.
Thanks for watching!
(Footage from March 2018)
A huge thank you to Captain Luke and Sail Ningaloo for partnering with us and taking us out to Ningaloo Reef! We had an amazing time and can't wait to come back some day!
Also be sure and check out their YouTube channel for more awesome videos of the reef! Bonus points if you can find us!

The Big Ocean Myth with Prosanta Chakrabarty
Ichthyologist Prosanta Chakrabarty makes the case that the oceans aren’t as vast as we think. At the Museum's Ocean Luminaries event held on March 2, 2018, he discussed the threat of pollution and how museum collections hold promise for the future of the world’s oceans. Chakrabarty is an associate professor and Curator of Ichthyology at Louisiana State University where he investigates the relationships of fishes to better understand evolutionary and geological processes.

1994 Onslow Trek
long and unedited version of the 1994 trek / fishing trip from Perth to Onslow I did with three of the Wheat brothers. The 2006 Great Central Trek also involves a couple of them. All sorts of random filming along the way (only where we had access to a 12v vehicle power source as the camera had no battery) plus the odd bit of fishing. Includes an excursion to old Onslow, an encounter with a turtle out past Thevenard Island, a pod of dolphins along the way. A fight with a mackerel and then huge tuna near Rosalie Island at the 1hr 18m mark. The parrot fish I released just after that brought a massive tiger shark up to the boat just as I was reaching over to retrieve it with the net. James then hooked the shark and fought it for ages (including it dancing on the water now and then) before it broke the line. Unfortunately we didn't get film of that bit though. Intense and scary stuff for us city types out in a single engine 21' boat over the horizon from shore a long way from home and no one really knowing where we were and the swell/breakers crashing down on Rosalie to starboard ! Also includes quick visit to a wreck on the coast in Carnarvon.
Anyhoo, if you're never likely to drag a couple of boats from Perth to Onslow with a couple of mates but wondered what it might be like to do so, then this could be the easiest and cheapest way to appreciate the experience. A week and couple of 1000km condensed into an hour and 3/4ish. :-)
I've just realized that 20 years later I still have that old green and black fishing rod. Has lasted well considering it was just some old cheap thing from k-mart ! regarDS
