Exmouth is a town on the tip of the North West Cape in Western Australia. The town is located 1,270 kilometres north of the state capital Perth and 3,366 kilometres southwest of Darwin. The town was established in 1967 to support the nearby United States Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt. Beginning in the late 1970s, the town began hosting U.S. Air Force personnel assigned to Learmonth Solar Observatory, a defence science facility jointly operated with Australia's Ionospheric Prediction Service.

    Yardie Creek or Yardie Creek Station is a pastoral lease and sheep station located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. It is situated approximately 12.5 kilometres west north west of Exmouth and 143 kilometres north of Coral Bay. The area was under pastoral lease beginning in 1876 when J Brockman acquired leases in the area covering North West Cape to run cattle. Brockman sold parts of the lease in 1888 to ornithologist Thomas Carter including Yardie Creek, Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo Station. Carter was the first settler in the area and established a pastoral station in 1889 grazing sheep. The 705,015-hectare heritage-listed area is located approximately 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is 260 kilometres long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass.The coast and reef draw their name from the Australian Aboriginal Wajarri language word ningaloo meaning promontory, deepwater, or high land jutting into the sea. The Yamatji peoples of the Baiyungu and Yinigudura clans have inhabited the area for over 30,000 years.
