On 24 June 2011, the World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe the Ningaloo Coast on the World Heritage List, acknowledging it as one of the outstanding natural places in the world.
The Ningaloo Coast World Heritage nomination was submitted to the World Heritage Committee by the Australian Government in January 2010, with the support of the Western Australian Government. During 2010 and early 2011, the nomination was assessed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Heritage Committee.
What is the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area boundary?
The boundary of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage area includes: Ningaloo Marine Park (Commonwealth and State waters) Cape Range National Park Jurabi and Bundegi coastal parks Muiron Islands and Muiron Islands Marine Management Area Learmonth Air Weapons Range
What is World Heritage?
World Heritage listing is the highest global recognition of the importance of a site. World Heritage listing does not change the way lands and waters are managed or change existing land uses and activities. World Heritage listing does not change day to day life in Exmouth, Coral Bay and Carnarvon. People can continue to enjoy fishing, camping, snorkeling, diving, hiking or exercising their dog in the World Heritage area. Visitors and locals can continue to enjoy the range of activities available on Ningaloo Coast.
Why was the Ningaloo Coast included on the World Heritage List?
The Ningaloo Coast was inscribed on the World Heritage List for its natural beauty and biological diversity. In particular, the Ningaloo Coast was included on the World Heritage list in recognition of its:
aesthetically striking coastal and terrestrial environment of the Ningaloo Reef adjacent to the Cape Range;
the lush and colourful underwater scenery and its contrast with the arid and rugged land;
annual aggregation of whale sharks, one of the largest in the world;
important aggregations of other fish species and marine mammals;
high marine diversity, including an unusual diversity of marine turtle species;
rare and diverse subterranean creatures; and
diversity of reptiles and vascular plants in the drylands.

Ningaloo Reef Whale Sharks, Exmouth, Western Australia
Whale Sharks migrate to Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia (WA) every year, giving visitors to Exmouth a once-in-a-lifetime swim with the largest fish in the world's oceans.
This is one of few places on Earth where these gentle giants come so close to shore, and in July 2013 Tourism Western Australia joined Hans and his wife on a Ningaloo whale shark tour from Exmouth WA to share this truly humbling encounter.
These harmless filter feeders can grow up to 16 metres (52.5 feet) in length, with a mouth spanning over a metre -- an awe-inspiring sight that Hans could only describe as one of the greatest experiences of his life. Their visit also brought Hans and his wife face-to-fin with other incredible marine life of World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef -- the largest fringing reef on Earth.
In striking contrast, a cruise through the rugged red gorge of Yardi Creek in Cape Range National Park, offered a chance to relax and enjoy the stillness and natural beauty of Exmouth, and to spot a hopping rock wallaby or two.
From mid-March to late July, visitors can experience the thrill of swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, with daily whale shark tours operating from Exmouth WA.

THE NINGALOO COAST: This part of Western Australia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it contains a unique diversity of wildlife, including a spectacular fringing coral reef that famously attracts yearly visits from hundreds of whale sharks. It is a relatively remote area, demanding visitors to be self-sufficient if they wish to spend multiple days along the coastline. The nearest town is Exmouth, which provides holiday accommodation and access to organised tours to those less inclined to adventure out on their own.

Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival, Exmouth WA
The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival is held annually in and around the town of Exmouth in the last weekend of May. The festival highlights the community's relationship with the yearly visit of the whale sharks.
The 2013 Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival will be from May 24 - 26. It caters for all ages and is a fun weekend of entertainment and activities.The event will start with a cocktail party on the Friday evening. Float parade, fun run, bands, musicians, beach games, fire juggling, aerial displays and circus shows are all part of the festival program.
The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is a name recognised nationally and internationally as a 'premier marine environment', home to the most predictable, seasonal aggregations of whale sharks in the world. This event is supported by Eventscorp, Department of Regional Development and Lands and Royalties for Regions.
There is the chance to swim with the whale shark, the biggest fish in the world from April - July each year at Ningaloo.
