Moon Hill-Yangshuo
You get to Moon Hill (Yueliang Shan) from Fenglou village, Gaotian township, near Guilin. It is a huge slice of rock with a round hole in its center, and you mount 800 steps on a marble paved mountain path to reach it. At various angles it resembles from the new moon to a full moon. The rock measures 380 m (height) by 410 m (length) by 220 m (width).
Legend has it that there is a Guanghan Palace on the moon inhabited by the beauty Chang'e, the Jade Rabbit, and Wu Gang the woodcutter. People in olden days thought they saw these immortals when they came upon spots on the moon's surface. Visitors to Moon Hill call to each other's attention that there are nature formed rock images of Chang'e, the Jade Rabbit and Wu Gang the woodcutter.Wikipedia
With 14 rock-climbing routes on the northwest side, Moon Hill offers sufficient challenge to both amateur and professional climbers. The area is included in an official plan for tourism development. In 1995, the local government built a bicycle path for visitors to freely enjoy the natural scenery along the path. The major scenic sights along the path are given vivid names according to their shapes, such as the Flaming Mountain
LAOZHAI MOUNTAIN HIKE: Is Xingping Better Than Yangshuo? | China Travel Guide
We travelled from Yangshuo to XINGPING in this week's backpacking China episode. Our goal, to complete the Laozhai Mountain hike (aka Laozhai Shan or Laozhai Hill) and get to the best view in China.
Xingping is an ancient fishing village that became world famous when Bill Clinton visited in 1999. Xingping is usually a popular day trip from Yangshuo or Guilin, but I wanted to know if it's actually a better place to visit?
Xingping's mountains and Li River views feature on the 20 Yuan Bank Note and you can visit the exact spot from the image just outside the ancient village.
We visited in rainy season, so the mountain hike was not easy - and actually pretty dangerous.

Biking in Yangshuo: Gorgeous sights in the Chinese countryside (CC)
After we checked in to our guest house, the hubs and I rented bikes and rode to nearby Moon Hill. His prediction for the ride? I'm gonna get a sunburn and die of dehydration. What really happened was we saw cows and gorgeous scenery--karst mountains, rice paddies, lovely villages. We got a little muddy. We climbed a BAJILLION stairs. We were exhausted. But happy--very, very happy. (Closed captioned.)
Background: Yangshuo is a beautiful town in Guanxi province, near popular tourist spot, Guilin. We decided that Guilin was a little too crowded for our tastes, so we went a little off the beaten path to Yangshuo, a quieter place. (Of course, Yangshuo isn't exactly off the tourist map--there are plenty of sightseers there, too. It's just not quite as crazy as Guilin.)
We stayed outside of the city at The Giggling Tree inn, where we rented the bikes we rode to Moon Hill. The scenery could not have been more idyllic.
The Giggling Tree:
The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!

Top 10 Best Places to Visit in China | Things to do in china
10 Must-See Places During a Trip to China
1.) The Forbidden City - For over 500 years, Beijing’s Forbidden City was the exclusive home of emperors and advisors, but since it first opened to the public, it has rapidly become one of the most-visited places on Earth. Given that there are over 980 interior buildings, trying to catalogue a list of highlights would be futile, but minube travelers suggest bringing lunch and planning on spending the whole day (it’s an entire city, after all) or staying until closing time to enjoy the city as the crowds clear out.
2.) Leshan Giant Buddha - Built in the eigth century in a bid to calm a raging river running by its feet, the Leshan Giant Buddha is one of China’s great architectural marvels and, at 223 ft., the largest sitting Buddha on the planet. The statue is carved directly into the riverside cliffs, and travelers can climb the stairwell from the Buddha’s feet to the cliff top and enjoy the massive statue from all angles.
3.) Hanging Temple - Only 4 hours from Beijing, the Hanging Temple is one the most impressive temples in China, but also one of the least-visited by international travelers. Suspended over 100 feet above the valley floor, the buildings are connected by a series of wooden walkways offering spectacular views, and the temple is famous for its mix of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian influences.
4.) Yuanyang Rice Terraces - For those looking for a break from China’s bustling cities, there are few places better than the idyllic rice terraces of Yuanyang County in the southwestern province of Yunnan. The terraces carved into the mountainsides fill up with water, which reflects the sky, clouds, rice plants, and algae, resulting in an epic and colorful landscape described by one traveler as “immense, beautiful, and surreal.”
5.) Potala Palace - Nowhere in the world is there a better display of Tibetan architecture than the Potala Palace, former home of the Dalai Lamas, and the political-religious seat of Tibet. The Palace, which is comprised of over 13 stories and two main palaces, is open to both visitors and pilgrims but only admits a limited number of visitors a day, so arrange to arrive at the ticket counter early, or reserve a trip with a local group.
6.) Jiuzhaigou Valley - Nestled in the mountains of the Sichuan province of southwest China, the Jiuzhaigou Valley is a wonderland of waterfalls, trails, villages, and crystal-clear glacial lakes in vivid hues of blue, green, and turquoise. While off-the-trail hiking and exploring is permitted to a limited extent, many travelers recommend taking the park’s hop-on-hop-off bus which stops in the main scenic areas and lets travelers choose the sections they’d prefer to explore on foot.
7.) Terracotta Army - Discovered in 1974, the Terracotta Army site features thousands of life-sized soldiers, officers, horses and chariots, each with individualized faces and uniforms. The most stunning part, however, is the sheer visual scale: travelers are confronted with an entire standing army (ceramic, of course) spread throughout four massive pits and is a delight for travel photographers now that the long-standing ban on photos has been partially lifted.
8.) Yungang Grottoes - Located near the Hanging Temple, the Yungang Grottoes and their 50,000 Buddha statues are one of the highlights of northern China. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the grottoes are comprised of dozens of caves and thousands of sculptures carved directly into the cliffs, and is one of the most popular regional attractions among Chinese tourists.
9.) Yangshuo - Since the mid-1980s, the town of Yangshuo has been drawing travelers from within China and around the world to explore the otherworldly landscape of angular green hills jutting up into the sky, waterfalls and rivers. Many travelers describe Yangshuo as their favorite part of China, and recommend renting bikes to explore the trails running through the peaceful landscape or hiring a boat to view the area from the Yi River.
10.) Great Wall of China - Of course, no list about China would be complete without China’s most iconic monument, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World: The Great Wall. The Wall, which stretches over 13,000 miles, is easily accessible for travelers in Beijing, many of whom hire informal guides to take them out to nearby sections of the wall.

12 - Yangshuo - China
Yangshuo County lies in the southeastern region in China. This county is regarded as one of the most beautiful counties in China and pictures on Instagram prove why! Ever since being featured on 'Lonely Planet' wayyy back in 1980, the town became popular with foreign backpackers, and organized tours began to arrive by the late 1990s. Today, the town is a popular resort destination for both domestic and foreign travelers.
The rippling Li River traverses the county and creates a one-of-a-kind vista. But the special geography isn’t the only thing that gives this place its amazing beauty – over 1,400 years’ worth of history makes Yangshuo a truly unique destination. You can tell that a sightseeing destination has hit the big time when it appears on a banknote! The Li River and the soaring scenery around Yangshuo are featured on the 20-yuan bill, along with Mao Zedong himself. Add a trending Instagram hashtag to that and you’ve got yourself a pretty good deal! Would you guys visit or have ever been to China? Let us know in the comments section, or by taking this survey!
11 - Lake Baikal - Russia
Lake Baikal is a rift lake in Russia, or more specifically, in southern Siberia. It’s the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing 22–23% of the world's fresh surface water – that’s almost one-fifth of the world’s fresh water! With 5,670 cubic miles of fresh water, it contains more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined! With a maximum depth of 5,387 feet, Baikal is the world's deepest lake. It’s considered among the world's clearest lakes and at 25-30 million years, it’s also considered the world's oldest lake! Baikal’s high biodiversity includes over 3,600 plant and animal species, most of which are endemic to the lake. Apart from the amazing nature surrounding the lake, during the colder months, the ice on Lake Baikal in many areas is completely transparent, making for some great looking shots for any photographer!
10 - Pamukkale - Turkey
Pamukkale literally means cotton castle in Turkish – and is the perfect name for this natural site in southwestern Turkey that looks like any girl’s Instagram paradise! The area is famous for its carbonate mineral formations left by the flowing water. The Turkish name refers to the surface of the shimmering, snow-white limestone pools, shaped over millennia by calcium-rich springs. Dripping slowly down the vast mountainside, mineral-rich waters foam and collect in terraces, spilling over cascades of stalactites into the milky pools below. The ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis was built on top of the “cotton castle” which, in total, is about 8,860 feet long, 1,970 feet wide and 525 feet high. It’s so big and bright, it can actually be seen from the hills on the opposite side of the valley in the town of Denizli. Together with Hierapolis, Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988.
9 - La Muralla Roja - Spain
Projecting from the cliffs on the border of the Mediterranean in Spain, La Muralla Roja or The Red Wall, is a bold apartment complex with breathtaking seaside views. Completed in the 1970s, Ricardo Bofill designed this playfully erratic fortress with no less than 50 apartments! At first glance, it’s easy to get lost in what looks like a colorful labyrinth. But, no matter how boisterous its personality may seem, its layout strictly conforms to the precise shape of the Greek cross. Each arm of the cross intersects at the service towers that contain kitchens and bathrooms. Heavily influenced by the architecture of the Arab Mediterranean Area, this housing project is a modern interpretation of a typical casbah – think back to Disney’s Aladdin and its walled citadel housing style.
