Bluff Trail - Near Islay Creek Campground - A Beach Camping Odyssey Part 3a
Bluff Trail. 4 Stars ****
Montana De Oro State Park, Los Osos, CA
Just steps from Islay Creek Campground at Montana De Oro State Park is the Bluff Trail. Exactly as the name described, the trail is located atop the bluff adjacent to the coastline. While you can also bike along the trail, I find it better to be hiking along as you will be stopping every few steps if you want to enjoy the view of the coastline.
I did the hike in late afternoon so I can see the sunset at the same time. The trail is flat so it is practically an easy stroll for any able bodied. If you don't want to break a sweat hiking, this is definitely the trail to go on.

Awesome Rockfish off of Bluff trail, Los Osos.
Caught this Rockfish off a cliff using squid and 2 oz pyramid sinker. Casting near rock formations and avoiding big boulders to catch this guy. The weather was great this weekend and the surf wasn't to choppy. These fish are amazingly tasty.

The New Bluff Trail - Montaña de Oro State Park
The Bluff Trail in Montaña de Oro State Park, Calif. has been widened and reconfigured to make it readily and safely accessible to all visitors. The new trail may be wider than the old trail, but the sights and thunderous sounds of the relentless surf are the same.

Castle Rock Hike in Big Bear
This hiking trail to Castle Rock in Big Bear, Southern California, is a great hiking option and leads further to a remote mountain lake and a record-height pine tree. Read more about this hike and see more hikes on our blog at

Oats Peak (Loose) Trail - Montana de Oro State Park, Los Osos, California
The Oats Peak Loose Descent is the less-traveled, and steeper option down from the top of the Oats Peak Trail. If you climb the entirety of the Oats Peak Trail from Spooner's Cove/Islay Creek Campground, you'll see the bottom of this trail tie in at the Valencia Peak Trail (no bikes) junction, just above the split for Beebe. To reach the beginning of this trail, hike up (or ride if you can!) to the left from the T at the end of the Oats Peak Trail climb. You'll typically encounter far fewer riders coming up this trail than you will the more gradual Oats Peak option.
The top of this trail offers some of the best views in the park!
PRO TIP: Park backed in with a view of Spooner's Cove near the trailhead, and have a couple of cold beers stashed in your car for after the ride. Sit on the hatch/tailgate/bumper and soak up some views! This ride can also start and end from Islay Creek Campground, so book a night or two there if you're visiting to get the most of Montana de Oro's killer trail network. Shout out to the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers for putting in the man hours to build and maintain this rad little trail system!

Rattlesnake Flats Trail
A great trail located in the Montana de Oro State Park near Los Osos, CA. Unfortunately, a portion of the trail was damaged in a recent fire.
Trying the new Canyon View Trail Montaña de Oro State Park
I went out to MDO before finals and did the Hazard's Peak ride, but on the way out I decided to ride Canyon View, the new trail at MDO.
Rainy Day Hike in the Los Osos Oaks
Went for a hike in the nearby Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve This is an 85 acre park that was established in 1972. It is situated on ancient sand dunes covered with centuries-old coast live oak trees. The oaks trunks and branches twist into all sorts of bizarre shapes giving the park a Tolkien-esque appearance. One of the trails goes through remnants of an old aboriginal Indian midden (trash dump) site with fragments of clam and abalone shells. These aboriginals were nomads and camped here in winter when the weather was poor. In 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola's expedition passed through the Los Osos Valley and encountered these gentle people, as well as large numbers of bears. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to hike and con
Montana De Oro Hazard Peak Mountain Bike Trail Los Osos Morro Bay
Hazard Peak is a very well-built trail that serves as the best place to start riding in Montana de Oro State Park. The end goal, Hazard peak, is a great viewpoint when there's no fog. Check weather locally to get the greatest reward for your climb.
The trail begins by heading up a sandy bluff, turning right at a junction in a eucalyptus grove (mile 1.0), then meandering back towards the brush covered slopes of Hazard Peak. Sustained yet moderate grades lead to a sharp left turn and an exposed traverse and shortly thereafter, the summit. A spur trail heads up to a picnic bench and amazing coastal views.
On the far side of Hazard Peak, the trail changes character and becomes rocky and steeper. This short drop quickly leads to a more flowy section and after a distinct right curve at a bench, and finally into a series of quick curves. The trail ends at a junction in a new, lush micro-climate.
While the front side of this trail (trailhead to Hazard Peak) is a blast both up and down, the backside's top section is loose, rocky, and will require most riders to walk on the way up.
Note - Hazard Peak is also a popular hiking destination, and Montana de Oro in general is popular with equestrians, so grab a bell at the trailhead box and help keep all trail users happier.
Montana de Oro State Park blowhole - v.2
A natural ocean blowhole that spouts during large waves and high tides on the Bluffs Trail at Montana de Oro State Park, near Los Osos, California. A subterranean chamber fills up with water and the resulting air pressure forces the remaining air through a passage up and out of a small opening in the shape of a woman's vagina in the rocks above.
Bluff Trail Montana De Oro
Montana De Oro State Park is just outside the City of San Luis Obispo and just south of Morro Bay. This is just a taste of the views from the Bluff Trail. It is a great walk and there are some great hiking trails here also, Valencia Peak is one of our favorites!
