Fresh Water Lake Dominica
The Freshwater Lake
2.5 miles from the village of Laudat high in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this lake is the source of the Roseau River and forms the basis for Dominica's hydro-electric scheme.
The Lake was originally of volcanic origin but construction of a dam some years ago as part of the hydo-electric scheme increased the size of the lake.
It is said to be bottomless although it is actually only 55ft deep... If you visit on a grey, misty day when wind-swept vapours swirl across its dragon-green surface, you will forgive the story-tellers for creating their far-fetched legends.
The Lake is reached on a new 2.5 mile road from the main Laudat-Roseau road just before you enter the village.
2005 saw the introduction of kayaking and boat tours on the Lake.
Besides the Lake itself, there is a good hour-long trail around the lake.
You can also continue on the road to the Boeri Lake.
The Boiling Lake in Dominica
The Boiling Lake in Dominica
The Morne Trois Pitons National Park in the island country of Dominica, in the Caribbean, is an area of significant volcanic activity. Located within the boundaries of the park’s nearly 7,000 hectares are five volcanoes, dozens of hot springs and fumaroles and a very large and famous boiling lake.
Dominica's Boiling Lake is actually a flooded fumarole, which is an opening or a hole in the Earth’s crust. It is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water at temperatures of around 90°C. The water is heated by hot steam and gases escaping from molten lava below. The surface of the lake is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapor. The lake is around 76 meters across, making it the second-largest hot lake in the world after the Frying Pan Lake in Waimangu Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand.
The lake was first sighted in 1875 by two English gentlemen who were working in Dominica at that time. Later that year, a government botanist and one of the original discoverers were commissioned to investigate this natural phenomenon. They measured the water temperature and found it to range from 82–92 °C along the edges, but could not measure the temperature at the center where the lake is actively boiling. They estimated the lake to be about 60 meters deep or more.
The lake is fed by rainfall and two small streams which drain into the area. The water then seeps down to the lava and is heated to the boiling point. The lake’s water level keeps fluctuating and the activity of the lake also lowers from time to time. The lake had almost disappeared after a phreatic eruption occurred nearby in 1880, and formed a fountain of hot water and steam instead. The lake had another dramatic fluctuation in 2004-2005 when its level got lowered by 10 meters, and then recovered in a single day.
Geologists believe that the lake is suspended above the local water table, which explains its rapid draining and refilling. A continuous flux of steam or gas generated by an underlying magmatic intrusion drives water up into the lake. A disturbance to the supply of gas can cause the lake to drain through the porous connection that normally allows steam to rise and heat the lake.

Titou Gorge in Dominica
Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a World Heritage Site located in Dominica. This area was established as a national park by the Dominican government in July 1975, the first to be legally established in the country. The National Park is named after its highest mountain, Morne Trois Pitons, meaning mountain of three peaks. The park is a significant area of volcanic activity. Features within the part include the Valley of Desolation, a region of boiling mud ponds and small geysers; the Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Emerald Pool.
The short swim from a swimming hole through a narrow gorge to a rather powerful waterfall is charmingly spooky, as it's dark down there with steep vine-clad lava walls no more than 5ft or 7ft apart. It's an ethereal and unusual place, but since it's also a cruise-ship darling, come early or late in the day for relative serenity.
The name, by the way, is Creole for 'small throat.' Don't swim the gorge after heavy rains when dangerous flash flooding may occur. Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here.

Morne Diablotin Dominica
On top of 4,747 ft Morne Diablotin on Dominica. This peak is named after the Black-capped Petrel, locally known as the Diablotin. The peak and its surrounding habitat was and likely still is important nesting habitat for this rare seabird species. EPIC has carried out surveys for the bird a number of times over the past ten years and is looking forward to its next trip in the near future.

Trafalgar river
Trafalgar Falls is fed by two water falls - One comes from the boiling lake (thus it is warm) - The other is from springs coming out of the mountains. The natives refer to them as Mother and Father Falls
Dominica Cold Sulphur Springs
The Cold Sulphur Springs which is located in a very clearly defined volcanic crater known as Bellevue Mountain.
Morne Diablotin is Dominicas highest mountain at an elevation of 1,447m. Located in a national park bearing its name, it is also classified as a stratovolcano and is thought to contain around five lava domes. Sub aquatic fumarole activity is present to the west of this mountain in Prince Rupert Bay and a subterranean geothermal layer creates natural hot springs in the Picard region.
