My wife panning for gold on Bonanza creek, located slightly outside of Dawson City Yukon. This section of the creek is a private claim thats open to the public for gold panning.
Discovery claim is a short distance away, which triggered the Gold Rush of the late 1800`s.

Striking GOLD in Dawson City, Yukon!!
This week we are stepping back in time and exploring the biggest gold rush in history in Dawson City, Yukon. The Klondike gold rush happened between 1896 and 1898 and the area is STILL overflowing with gold! I got a chance to spend some time with one of the miners in the area and got a chance to go panning for gold!
This town really fells like you are in the wild wild west. Everything from the Sour Toe Shot, to can can dancers, all the way to dusty streets full of buildings that haven't been touched since the 1890s! Truly a town perfectly preserved in time!

Shortly after gold was discovered in the Yukon Territory, Dredge No. 4 was installed to harvest gold from the surrounding earth.
The dredge has been out of commission since 1959, and is now recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada. Explore this site in Dawson City, and learn about its role in Canadian industrial mining history.

Yukon Gold - The First Family of the Gold Rush
Families mining together is a common sight in the Klondike. It has been since as early as 1896, when George Carmack, his wife Kate, and his brother-in-law Skookum Jim found a thick layer of gold lying in the riverbed at what’s now known as Bonanza Creek, just 17km south of Dawson City — sparking the Klondike Gold Rush.

In this segment of Alaska Story Time with Aunt, author/historian Laurel Downing Bill highlights the discovery of gold that started the Klondike Gold Rush. The episode first aired on Aug. 13, 2018, on Anchorage CBS affiliate KTVA Channel 11 Daybreak.
We all have heard tales of Klondike gold and how thousands of people came north in search of their fortunes in 1898. But August 17, 1896, marks the day that three men found the deposit of nuggets that started that rush.
Canadians recognize it as Klondike Discovery Day – and that discovery of riches in the Klondike is usually credited to George Washington Carmack, who came to Alaska from California in the 1880s. However, his Native friend James Mason actually spotted the gold nuggets first.
Mason, better known as Skookum Jim, and his nephew, Charlie – often called Dawson or Tagish Charlie – traveled with George Carmack the summer of 1896 as he searched for a good fishing spot. But the fishing was poor, so the men gave up and decided to cut timber instead.
Skookum Jim, whose sister Kate had married Carmack, followed Rabbit Creek looking for good trees. That’s where he noticed many flecks of gold in the water. After Carmack and Charlie caught up to him, the men decided to stake the Discovery Claim, which is the first claim in a region and becomes the center point of a mining district. Claims upstream from the Discovery Claim were numbered “One Above,” and the claims downstream were called “One Below” and so on.
Skookum, which means strong, thought it should be his by right of discovery. But Carmack said a Native would not be allowed to record it. The men finally settled the issue by having Carmack stake the Discovery Claim and then assign a half interest in it to Jim. Since the discoverer was allowed a second claim, Carmack staked number One Below and then Two Below for Charlie. Skookum Jim staked One Above. The men then renamed the creek Bonanza.
By the spring of 1898, the group had cleared $150,000 between them – about $4.5 million in today’s dollars. Then they decided to see what civilization had to offer.
The group sailed to Seattle and stayed at the Butler, one of the best hotels in town. But the hotel had so many halls and stairways that Carmack’s wife used her skinning knife to slash a series of blaze marks on doors and mahogany banisters to keep from getting lost on the trail from their suite to the dining room.
Kate, Jim and Charlie also acquired a taste for champagne and amused themselves by flinging bills and gold nuggets into the street. They then watched gleefully as crowds pushed and shoved to get to the riches, which brought Seattle traffic to a standstill.
Carmack, who divorced Kate and remarried soon thereafter, invested in Seattle real estate and operated a mine in California. He died of pneumonia in 1922 at the age of 62 and left a hefty estate to his second wife.
Kate returned to Caribou Crossing, later renamed Carcross, in the Yukon Territory. She lived with brother Jim, who also supported her and her daughter, Grace. Kate died in 1920.
Charlie sold his mining properties in 1901. He bought the Carcross Hotel and spent the next seven years living lavishly. But during a drinking spree in December 1908, he fell off a bridge and drowned at the age of 42.
Skookum Jim sold his Klondike mines in 1904 and spent the next 12 years traveling the north vainly seeking another gold claim. Even though he received royalties of $90,000 a year – about $2.5 million today – he just could not stop looking for another big strike. He died in 1916.
Canadians keep their memories alive every year as they celebrate all three men as co-discovers on Klondike Discovery Day.

Alaska Tour - Dawson City, Yukon Terr - Stop #9 - Panning for Gold
Today we made the 330 mile trek from Whitehorse to Dawson City -- home of the Klondike Gold rush!! To get there, we stopped for a break at the Braeburn Lodge and had one of their famous HUGE Cinnamon Buns!
In Dawson City we started with a walking tour that included the SS Keno a retired sternwheeler, an original bank & post office from during the gold rush, a poetry reading from Robert W. Service, and finished with a play at the Palace Grand Theater! The next day we toured Jack London's cabin, saw Dredge #4 (largest gold dredging machine every built), and saw the original Discovery Claim spot that started the whole gold rush!
My favorite part though, was being taught how to gold pan, and actually doing it a couple of times in Bonanza Creek! After all was said and done, Jeannie and I came away with multiple pieces of small gold nuggets!!
