Swellendam and Bontebok National Park, South Africa
About two hours east of Cape Town is a lovely little Dutch settlement called Swellendam. It is easily accessible through public transportation and is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountains (Marloth Nature Reserve), which has numerous trails for day hikes and overnight treks. You can spend the day at nearby Bontebok National Park, a nature reserve with hiking trails and animals that include antelope and zebra. Also a short distance away are numerous wineries along the Robertson Wine Route and many opportunities for horseback riding. Overall, Swellendam is a quaint town with a relaxing atmosphere including many family-run Dutch inspired restaurants in its humble downtown area. It may be the perfect stop for a couple days of of R&R on a more rigorous tour along the Garden Route.

A couple of hours' drive from Hermanus is Swellendam where there is a natural reserve with bambi-animals (no lions and such but I don't mind not being eaten so it's allright).

Bontebok National Park kicks off National Parks Week
Sanparks has kicked off the start of National Parks Week at the Bontebok National Park near Swellendam, in the Overberg region of the Western Cape.
The week-long event allows free access to all South Africans to all parks, countrywide. Sanparks says the objective is to cultivate a culture of national pride.

Megan and I visit Bontebok National park just outside of Swellendam. This the smallest of all the SAN park reserves and to no ones surprised is fulled with endangered Bontebok! We were also able to get a closer look at some Ronsterveld which is an endangered habitat in South Africa due to land use change. We also managed to sneak a walk in during our short stay and were rewarded with Stunning landscapes! Hope you all enjoy and remember to like and Subscribe for Wildlife adventures!

Bontebok grazing close to our accommodation in the Bontebok National Park
We spotted a few bontebok grazing just outside our accommodation in the South African National Parks Bontebok National Park situated in Swellendam.
Thanks to the conservation efforts of Bontebok National Park, the species of antelope after which it is named, has been brought back from the brink to roam freely in sustainable numbers. Bontebok numbers have increased from a mere 17 in the park to around 3 000 worldwide.
