Marc Spitz Reading from Poseur at Book Soup in West Hollywood
As I didn't die there from heroin, quakes, coyote attacks, or Valley Girl heartbreak in the 90s, I had the good fortune of returning to Los Angeles twice to read at Book Soup on Sunset Boulevard, one of my favorite booksellers.
Driving Downtown - Sunset Strip 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Sunset Boulevard - Los Angeles California USA - Episode 80.
Starting Point: Sunset Boulevard .
The Sunset Strip is the name given to the mile-and-a-half (2.4 km) stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood, California. The Strip is probably the best-known portion of Sunset, embracing boutiques, restaurants, rock clubs, and nightclubs that are on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry. It is also known for its trademark array of huge, colorful billboards.
Cultural Aspects:
The Sunset Strip portion of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood has been famous for its active nightlife at least since the 1950s.
In the 1970s, the area between Gardner Street and Western Avenue was a center for street prostitution. Shortly after a well publicized June 1995 incident, police raids drove out the majority of prostitutes on the Boulevard.
Part of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood is also sometimes called Guitar Row due to the large number of guitar stores and music industry-related businesses, including the recording studios Sunset Sound Studios and United Western Recorders.
The portion of Sunset Boulevard that passes through Beverly Hills was once named Beverly Boulevard.
At 4334 W. Sunset Boulevard, lies the wall featured on the cover of the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith's 2000 album, Figure 8. Since Elliot's death in 2003, the wall has become a mural for the artist where fans have left many personal messages over the years.

RAINBOW BAR AND GRILL - Sunset Strip
The Rainbow Bar and Grill is a bar and restaurant on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, United States adjacent to the border of Beverly Hills, California. Its address is 9015 Sunset Boulevard.
The bottom level of the building is the restaurant, The Rainbow Bar and Grill. Upstairs is an exclusive club called Over the Rainbow, which consists of a full bar, dance floor, and a DJ booth. The restaurant is next to The Roxy Theatre and The Key Club.
The restaurant was founded in early 1972 by Elmer Valentine, Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and others,[1] opening on April 16, 1972 with a party for Elton John.[2] At the time, the word rainbow signified peace and freedom. It quickly became known as a hangout for celebrities of all types.[3] John Belushi ate his last meal[4] (lentil soup)[5] at table #16. For many years, the owner was Mario Maglieri.[3]
Before becoming the Rainbow, the restaurant was the Villa Nova restaurant, which was originally owned by film director Vincente Minnelli, at the time married to Judy Garland. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe met at the restaurant on a blind date in 1952.[6]
The Rainbow became known as a hangout for rock musicians and their groupies. Notable regulars at the Rainbow in this period include Lemmy, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Micky Dolenz, Grace Slick, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, Janis Joplin,[4] Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Lizzy Valentine and many others. Elvis Presley was known to have occasionally visited the Rainbow. The famous group of musicians called The Hollywood Vampires made the Rainbow their home away from home in the early 1970's.
Los Angeles songwriter Warren Zevon referenced the scene at the Rainbow in the last verse of his 1976 song Poor Poor Pitiful Me.
The musical group Rainbow was named after this club.
The track Rainbow Bar & Grill from the Cheech & Chong album Let's Make a New Dope Deal takes place in the bar and restaurant.
Producer Kim Fowley used to hangout at the Rainbow, especially in 1975, when he formed the all-girl group The Runaways.
As musical trends on the Strip changed towards heavy metal in the 1980s, the Rainbow followed suit. Members of Mötley Crüe,[7] Poison, and Guns N' Roses frequented the bar.[8] It was mentioned in a number of songs, such as Sunset and Babylon by W.A.S.P., Vampire by L.A. Guns and Peach Kelli Pop by Redd Kross, and featured in the videos of November Rain, Knocking on heaven's door, Estranged and Don't Cry by Guns N' Roses.
Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers noted in his book Scar Tissue that he often sat with his father, Blackie Dammett, at the club along with various members of bands such as Led Zeppelin. Often the waitresses and bartenders were groupies as well as those who frequented the establishment. In Pamela Des Barres' book, Let's Spend the Night Together, the author commented that as an employee in the early 1980s she met a number of celebrities including Billy Idol.[9]
What A Dollar ($1) Gets You Around The World
From a loaf of bread to a full-course meal, here’s what $1 will get you around the world!
15. One Snickers bar (Japan)
Believe it or not, Japan is not as expensive as most people think. In fact, Tokyo is actually cheaper than both London and New York! So if you’re planning a low-budget trip to Japan and you’ve got a sweet tooth, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive desserts in fancy Japanese restaurants. All you need to satisfy your sugar cravings is $1 which will get you one Snickers bar in any convenience store. And if you’ve got a bit more to spare, rather than buying a single bar, you can grab a value bag with 9 mini Snickers at 20g each. You can find these at any supermarket in Japan for roughly 280 yen, or around $2.50 per bag. This means that for only $1.5 extra, you get more than four times the amount of candy. Not bad, right?
14. A loaf of bread (UK)
Bread is a staple food all over the world, and in the UK you can get a fresh loaf for $1. What’s interesting is that the price of a loaf of bread in UK rose by an incredible 11,000% in the past one hundred years thanks to inflation. In 1914, a loaf cost well under a penny, while now the average loaf costs around £1. According to a Lloyds Private Banking study, if the inflation continues at the same rate over the next century, it is predicted that the cost of a loaf of bread in the UK could hit £150 by 2115! Researchers speculate that the value of money will decline by 94 percent over the next 100 years, meaning £100 in today’s money would then be worth £1,582. But until then - what do you think, is $1 for a loaf of bread a fair price? How much does a loaf cost in your country?
13. A slice of pizza (NYC)
New York-style pizza is one of the most popular types of pizzas in the world. This style evolved on the East Coast of the U.S. from the pizza made by Italian immigrants in New York City in the early 1900s, which itself derived from the Neapolitan style pizza originally made in Italy. Today, NYC-style pizza is the dominant style eaten in the New York Metropolitan Area states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and many other places throughout the United States. This delicious pizza is traditionally hand-tossed, and consists of a light layer of tomato sauce, sprinkled with dry, grated, full-
mozzarella cheese. There are many places in NYC where you can get a slice for just $1, and some of the most popular spots include 2 Bros Pizza on Times Square, Fresh Hot Pizza on Lexington Avenue, Mamani Pizza in East Village, and Percy’s Pizza in Greenwich Village.
11. A spring role (LA)
In Los Angeles, for $1 you can buy yourself a yummy veggie spring role in the poplar Chinese-style restaurant Mao's Kitchen in West Hollywood. This casual eatery serves up country-style dishes with a side of Mao-themed humor. Sure, the food at Mao's Kitchen might not be authentic Chinese food - it more like California food that has been inspired by Chinese food – but this cool and inexpensive place is definitely worth paying visit if you’re trying to survive in LA on a budget. The first you’ll notice in the parking lot of Mao’s Kitchen is a huge mural showing the People’s Liberation Army and a man holding Mao’s Little Red Book. So, not only will you be able to enjoy a delicious spring role for just $1, you’ll also have the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and get a taste of the Cultural Revolution under Chairman Mao!

10. A bottle of local r (Brazil)
Did you know that Brazil is the world's third largest market with total volume at 139 million hectoliters and a yearly per capita consumption of 61 liters? The consumption in Brazil explodes during the Carnival period and it is estimated that in these 4 days, carnival goers drink about 400 million liters, or around 4% of the yearly production ofin Brazil! And if you want to try out the most popular local – Antarctica – all you’ll need is $1 for a 350 ml bottle. Antarctica is a malty and slightly bitte with a fresh and fruity aftertaste. And you won’t have to look too hard to find it - it’s the 2nd best selling in Brazil and the most common r sold by street vendors in every tourist spot across the country.
9. A pound of onions (France)
Restaurants in France can get crazy expensive, so if you’re travelling on a budget and you still want to try out the local cuisine - why not try and make the traditional French onion soup from scratch?
Generation selfie - the new narcissistic trend
(12 Oct 2015) LEAD IN:
Selfies, snapping photos of yourself and posting them online, are a way to document not just what you do, but who you are.
But one psychologist is warning that selfies are turning into an obsession - and are a sign of a society that's addicted to a culture of celebrity.
STORY-LINE
Taking selfies - the self portrait of the so-called millennial generation.
However you pose - whether with a pout or a smile - the most important thing is to look good.
According to US-wide survey conducted in 2014 by the Pew Research Center, 55 percent of millennials - those aged around 18 to 33 - have posted a selfie, compared to 24 percent from Generation X and nine percent of Baby Boomers.
There are no precise birth dates for each generation, but millennials are generally considered to be those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s, Generation X from the early 1960s to the early 1980s, and the Baby Boomers from 1945 to the early 1960s.
Posting selfies on social networking sites is one of the ways the millennial generation documents itself - as well as a barometer of popularity, and a way to make friendships.
But some say there are signs that the selfie phenomenon is going too far.
Dr. Nicholas Nikolov, a plastic surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills, California, says he sees more clients coming to him because they are obsessed with their selfie image.
He's consulting a client, 23-year-old model Candice Wurster, who says her selfie image is bothering her because of the shadows she sees under her eyes.
I see a lot more people coming to my office and the answer to the question 'what bothers you and why did you decide to come and see me?', surprising enough is, 'I saw a selfie of myself and I hated it and I have to fix it.' And the first few times I was taken aback. I thought they were putting me on. I thought it was something light hearted and joking around. It was the truth. They really weren't happy how they looked in a selfie, and that instigated the whole trip to come and see me and see what they can do about it, Nikolov says.
The celebrity considered the trail blazer for the selfie phenomenon is reality star Kim Kardashian, whose more than four million Twitter followers are hungry for the photos she posts of herself.
Kardashian saw an opportunity to publish a 352-page book of her selfie photography - and released 'Selfish' in May 2015.
On the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, the iconic book shop, Book Soup, has been selling 'Selfish' next to other celebrity books in the photography section.
But Book Soup spokesman Dan Graham says only 16 copies have been sold in this store since it came out in May.
I wouldn't say it's a bomb, but I don't think it's been selling well. I think a lot of people are waiting to see kind of what happens. A lot of these photos are photos that have been seen before already, so it's a very small market of people who probably really want to have that kind of book maybe on their coffee table, he says.
Graham says many selfie aficionados are disappointed with the book because it contains mainly photographs that were already posted online.
Neilson BookScan, a provider of point of sale data for the book publishing industry, reported in August 2015 that 'Selfish' sold only 32,000 copies in the first three months of release.
But Pam Sommers, Executive Director of Publicity at the book's publisher, Rizzoli, says the BookScan figure does not take into account international sales and non-book retailers, and puts the total number of sales at 175,000 as of September 1, 2015.
Others say there is constant pressure to get the perfect pose and look, as young people seek approval - or likes - from their peers to bolster their self confidence and prove their popularity.

Healing Brought Down from the Mountain - Paralysis Recovery to Marathon Athlete - Doug Heyes
Aired Wednesday, 30 March 2016, 4:00 PM ET
16 years ago, while working as a National Ski Patroller in Southern California (where he has served for two decades and led hundreds of rescues) Doug Heyes sustained a massive spinal cord injury from which he was initially paralyzed from the neck down, unable to move, feel, or breathe. Following his own miraculous healing from that paralyzing spinal-cord injury, Doug first came into an awareness of his gift for Spirit-Energy Healing. His story received widespread attention since its publication in Chicken Soup for the Soul: A Book of Miracles “Miracle on the Mountain.” Since that life-changing experience, Doug has devoted himself to the study and practice of transformational healing. In his book, The Touch, Doug takes us through his story and how you can learn to use his method of healing. The Touch is much more than a teaching guide. Its heartbeat comes through in Heyes’ inspiring “tales from the trail,” milestones on his amazing trek down the path of light, stories of remarkable healings – including his own – that changed his life forever.
About the Guest Doug Heyes
Doug Heyes started out as young actor. His first TV role was at the age of three, appearing in the original “Twilight Zone” series directed by his father, Douglas Heyes. Following his successful acting career, Heyes shifted to writing and spent many years in the trenches of dramatic series television, with dozens of individual episodic credits and multiple network engagements as a creative executive and producer of primetime programming.
After his skiing accident, “THE TOUCH,” awakened him to his own healing gifts and set the stage for his total immersion in the healing arts – a journey which took him through a lineage of masters and teachers from various traditions, and back to school, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology (UCLA, 2007) and a Master’s Degree in Spiritual Psychology (University of Santa Monica, 2012). Since receiving his Master’s, Heyes has devoted himself to developing his private practice in Spiritual Psychology, Transformational Coaching and RAM Healing. He has also created an intensive workshop – “AWAKEN YOUR INNER HEALER” – in which he teaches the skills presented in THE TOUCH, a text which now becomes “required reading” in his workshops.
Heyes is an avid outdoorsman, skier, whitewater kayaker, martial artist and long-distance athlete. Since his astonishing recovery, Heyes has competed in numerous endurance challenges as celebrations of health and opportunities for charitable fundraising. These events have included marathons, century rides, triathlons, mountain multisport events such as the gutbusting Conquer The Bear Series (Snowshoeing, Lake Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Mountain Triathlon and the Big Bear Lake Marathon) and such classics as the MS150 Bike Tour – 150 miles in 2 days for Multiple Sclerosis – and the grueling Peak-to-Peak Pedal – 335 miles between Big Bear Lake and Mammoth Mountain, California for the United States Adaptive Recreation Center. A seasoned Emergency Medical Technician, ski patroller and outdoor rescue instructor, Heyes also holds a Red Belt in Pyong Ahn Do Won (Peaceful Mind Way) Kung Fu and has served as a training instructor for the American Academy of Martial Arts. Doug Heyes makes his home in the coastal mountains of California.

Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
[CHECK OUT CHANNEL: AUDIOBOOK FOR PULP & SOUTH OF NO NORTH]
Written By: Charles Bukowski
Narrated By: Christian Baskous
Publisher: HarperCollins
PublishersDate: August 2013
Summary:
In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.
Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Wall / Grass / Floor
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.
George Zimmerman Sues Trayvon Martin's family
George Zimmerman was acquitted in the fatal 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin, but according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Florida, he believes there was a conspiracy to frame him and wants $100 million in damages. Attorney Larry Klayman announced the lawsuit in tandem with a Coral Gables screening of a documentary titled, The Trayvon Martin Hoax, which has since been canceled. Zimmerman is scheduled to appear alongside Klayman at a Thursday news conference. The chief allegation in the lawsuit is that civil rights attorney Ben Crump helped to swap out a reluctant witness, Brittany Diamond Eugene, for her half-sister, Rachel Jeantel, and helped prepare her to deliver a script intended to land Zimmerman in prison for the 17-year-old's killing on February 26, 2012. Crump began representing Trayvon's parents starting on February 28, 2012, the lawsuit says.

World War II: Crash Course World History #38
Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! Visit to buy a set for your home or classroom.
In which John Green teaches you about World War II, aka The Great Patriotic War, aka The Big One. So how did this war happen? And what does it mean? We've all learned the facts about World War II many times over, thanks to repeated classroom coverage, the History channel, and your grandfather (or maybe great-grandfather) showing you that Nazi bayonet he used to keep in his sock drawer and telling you a bunch of age-inappropriate stories about his harrowing war experiences. So, why did the Axis powers think forceful expansion was a good idea? (they were hungry). So why did this thing shake out in favor of the Allies? HInt: it has to do with the fact that it was a world war. Germany and Japan made some pretty serious strategic errors, such as invading Russia and attacking the United States, and those errors meant that pretty much the whole world was against them. So, find out how this worldwide alliance came together to stop the Axis expansion. All this, plus Canada finally gets the respectful treatment it deserves. Oh, and a warning: there are a few graphic images in this episode. Sensitive viewers may want to use caution, especially around the 9:15 mark.
