BORNEAN SUN BEAR CONSERVATION CENTRE - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is a sun bear rescue and rehabilitation facility being developed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
Malayan sun bears are the smallest bears in the world and are only found in Southeast Asia. These bears continue to be threatened by forest degradation, illegal hunting for bear parts and poaching to obtain young cubs for pet trade. The results of these threats has caused young sun bears found to be living in unnatural captive conditions in Sabah, with no access to outdoor areas.
There are currently 43 rescued ex-captive sun bears residing at the BSBCC. The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild.

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) receives another 5 bears, Park plans sun bear release
Five Malayan sun bears were relocated to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sandakan recently, bringing the total of the protected species to 32 currently at the conservation centre. The five bears - four adults and a six-month-old cub - were previously sheltered at the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park after they were previously rescued by forest rangers or were handed in to the authorities by the public. Officer-in-charge of the park and veterinarian Dr Rosa Sipangkui said that the four male and one female bears were tranquillised on March 10 and given a full medical examination to make sure they were healthy before they were put in cages for an eight-hour journey to their new jungle home at the conservation centre. One day they may be rehabilitated and released into a protected forest reserve, she said. The centre's chief executive officer, Wong Siew Te said it took his team three hours to unload and settle the bears at their new 'home'. These bears are not part of those for public viewing, but we will continue to monitor and update the public on their progress, here, he added. The centre is able to receive more bears now after the recent completion of a second bear house. It will become a home to 34 bears, which include the recent batch and another two coming in by the end of the month. Wong urged the public to surrender the animal to authority as it was an offence to keep Sun Bears in captivity or as pets. They are forest-dependent species and play important roles in the forest ecosystem as seed dispersers in the forest. Their roles are akin to engineers, doctors and farmers in the forest's ecosystem. They keep our forests healthy, for the benefit of humans and all life forms. Meanwhile, Sabah Wildlife Department director Datuk Dr Laurentius Ambu said those found to be keeping the sun bear any of its body parts could be jailed up to five years or be fined a maximum of 50,000 Malaysia Ringgit (US$15,246) if convicted. Habitat loss and poaching for parts used in traditional medicine are among key threats that have led to a severe decline of the sun bear population in the last three decades in Sabah. Sabah is now at a crossroad, and failure to protect remaining forest reserves would be a deathblow not only for our beautiful sun bears but also many other protected wildlife species such as clouded leopards and Orang utans, he said. The sun bears is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN red list and is at risk of becoming endangered in future.

vlog oldwhitehairs No 20 Malayan Sun Bears / Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre Sandakan Sabah. The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre at Sepilok Sandakan has been established to rehabilitate Malayan Sun Bears that have been kept as pets and bears that have been involved in the bile trade for Chinese medicines .
The bears when located are bought to the centre where they undergo re training before released back into the wild. The centre has approximately forty four bears in their care at this time .
Wehen the bear is first bought to the centre they are housed in one of the two specially built bear houses where they undergo medical tests, behavioral assessments and treatment for any ailments and decease. After a period of time when the bear is assessed to be health enough they are released into special designed enclosures which mimic the conditions that the bear will live in in the wild. The length of time that the bear spends in the enclosures depends on how well the animal adapts to learning to live in the wild
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre releases around two bears a year, however there are some bears that will never be released due to their high dependence on human invention for their lively hood . The bears could take several years before becoming sufficiently independent to take to the wild.
The CEO and founder of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is Wong Siew Te

Protecting the Sun Bears of Borneo | National Geographic
See how the small sun bear, native to southeast Asia, is struggling to survive amid deforestation and poaching. The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is working to protect these bears, the world's smallest, through its rescue efforts and by educating the public about forest protection. National Geographic grantee Eddie Roqueta films the bears up close in their natural habitat at the center as its founder discusses the organization's quest to keep this vulnerable species wild in its rain forest home.

Wong Siew Te of Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre LIVE IN KL
Wong founded the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre four years ago as he realised there was a real lack of information, and knowledge about the Malayan Sun Bears.
Wong is based in Sandakan, Sabah (Malaysian Borneo) and made this welcome speech on 25 April 2012 at DoPPel Kafe in Central Market just before an indie jazz and alternative music gig where musicians; Ady Suwardy, Meliha Faisal, Ryota Katayama, Noel of The Wave - performed to raise awareness about the 'beruang madu' for weeklong festival 'Rockin' 4 the Environment: Sun Bear Rocks!'.
