History of Kota Kinabalu (1882-2014)
History of The City of Kota Kinabalu (1882-2014)
In 1882, BNBC (British North Borneo Company) founded a settlement, which was already inhabited by Bajau people, on Gaya Island. In 1897, this first settlement was burned and destroyed by the indigenous Bajau-Suluk freedom fighter Mat Salleh.
After the destruction, BNBC decided to relocate the settlement to the mainland at Gantian Bay (now Sepangar Bay) in 1898. However that location was found to be unsuitable and in July 1899, Henry Walker, a Land Commissioner, identified a 30-acre site opposite Gaya Island as a replacement for Gantian. This fishing village named Api-Api was chosen due to its proximity to the North Borneo Railway and its natural port that provided good anchorage, which was up to 24 feet deep.
By the end of 1899, construction had started on shoplots, a pier and government buildings. This new administrative centre was renamed Jesselton after Sir Charles Jessel, who was the then Vice-Chairman of BNBC.
Eventually, Jesselton became a major trading post of North Borneo, dealing in rubber, rattan, honey, and wax. The North Borneo Railway was used to transport goods to the Jesselton harbour. The Malay and Bajau uprisings during those times were not uncommon, and BNBC worked to quell the long-standing threat of piracy in the region.
Jesselton was razed by the Japanese and suffered more destruction when the Allies bombed it in 1945. During the Japanese occupation, it was again renamed Api. Several rebellions against the Japanese military administration took place in Api.
One major rebellion of Kinabalu Guerillas of local inhabitants occurred on 10 October 1943. Japanese forces quelled the rebellion after its leader, Albert Kwok, was arrested and executed in 1944. At the later stages of the war, what remained of the town was destroyed again by Allied bombings day and night for over six months as part of the Borneo Campaign in 1945. The war in North Borneo ended with the official surrender of the Japanese 37th Army by Lieutenant General Baba Masao in Labuan on 10 September 1945.
After the war, the British North Borneo Company returned to administer Jesselton but was unable to finance the huge costs of reconstruction. They gave control of North Borneo to the British Crown on 18 July 1946. The new colonial government elected to rebuild Jesselton as the capital of North Borneo instead of Sandakan, which had also been destroyed by the war. The Crown Colony administration designed a plan, later known as the Colonial Office Reconstruction and Development Plan for North Borneo: 1948–1955”, to rebuild North Borneo. This plan provided £6,051,939 for the rebuilding of infrastructure in North Borneo.
When Crown Colony of North Borneo together with Sarawak, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya formed the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, it became known as Sabah, and Jesselton remained its capital. On 22 December 1967, State Legislative Assembly under Chief Minister Tun Mustapha bin Datu Harun passed a bill renaming Jesselton to Kota Kinabalu. The city was upgraded to city status on 2 February 2000.

SANDAKAN - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
Sandakan formerly known at various times as Elopura, is a town in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. It is located on the east coast of the state in the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. The town has an estimated population of 157,330 while the surrounding municipal area has a total population of 396,290.
Before the founding of Sandakan, Sulu Archipelago was the source of dispute between Spain and the Sultanate of Sulu for economic dominance in the region. Sandakan began to prosper when the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) started to build a new settlement in 1879, developing it into an active commercial and trading centre as well as making it the main administrative centre for North Borneo.
Sandakan is one of the main ports for oil, tobacco, coffee, sago, and timber exports. Other economic activities include fishing, ship building, eco-tourism, and manufacturing. Among the tourist attractions in Sandakan are Sandakan Heritage Museum, Sandakan Cultural Festival, Sandakan War Memorial, Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands National Park, and Gomantong Caves.
Sultan's daughter, Princess Jacel Kiram, explains why Sabah is for Filipinos
The Philippine concern on the West Philippine Sea has been in frequent talks for several years now. However, that region is not everything that the Philippines has a historical claim on for certain areas. We must not forget that somewhere in Mindanao, there was once a great sultanate in Sulu and their royal house, their lineage, can help us remember another region that the Philippines has a historical claim on: Sabah.
This interview can help us get educated on the general ideas on why Sabah is historically owned by the Philippines and not by Malaysia. There are countries that have been teaching their children, through schools and forms of media, on the reasons why certain territories are theirs and why they have more rights in certain areas than other countries. In the Philippines, we hope that our government, schools, communities, and families would do a better job in educating our people on the territories that we have been claiming for decades now.
It is a privilege that I was able to interview the Princess Jacel Kiram–daughter of the late Sultan Jamalul Kiram III–who has clear direct blood ties with the former sultans of Sulu.
Princess Jacel Kiram raised the following points:
1. Sabah is producing an income of $72B per year. If we are going to compute that, how much can it help to benefit the Filipino people?
2. Sabah is a property owned by the sultanate of Sulu. But because Sulu is officially part of the Philippines, a constitutionally republican-democratic country, then Sabah is also part of the Philippines.
3. The Philippine claim for Sabah goes back to the 1700’s. It was given to sultanate of Sulu by the sultanate of Brunei as a token of gratitude in helping to stop the rebellion in Brunei.
4. The sultanate of Sulu rented Sabah to British North Borneo Company. The agreement was it would pay 5,000 Mexican gold coins per year. However, when Malaysia was born in the 1960’s and the British turned over the authority to Malaysia for their country, Malaysia continued the rent. But, instead of paying through Mexican gold coins, they paid through the amount of 5,300 ringgit per year. Today, one ringgit costs less than P13. Imagine how low this is compared to the income caused by Sabah of $72B per year. This is why the sultanate of Sulu would rather cancel the rent, have the whole of Sabah be back under full operations of the Philippines, and help make the Filipinos benefit from it completely once again.
5. Actually, when the sultanate of Sulu made moves to get Sabah back in 2013, the Malaysian government already stopped paying their annual rent because they wanted to show that Sabah is indeed theirs so why do they pay rent? Still, it cannot be denied that they have been paying rent for decades now and it was only because they wanted to show they’re not “renting” it which is why they stopped paying even if there is a rental agreement.
6. In 2016, President Duterte had a clear stand on Sabah. He said that it is for the Filipinos. We are hoping that our government would successfully push for it, using a lot of political will to get Sabah back for Filipinos. President Duterte’s term has not ended yet, so we are still hopeful of moves done by the government on this.
(This video shall also be set to appear in the facebook profile of Obed dela Cruz and a blog would be written showing other info not stated by Princess Jacel Kiram but by other people to provide more context and urgency in the Philippine claim for Sabah)

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia
Kota Kinabalu formerly known as Jesselton, is the capital of the state of Sabah, Malaysia. It is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located to its east. Kota Kinabalu has a population of 452,058 and, including the adjacent Penampang and Putatan districts, the metro area has an estimated population of 628,725.In the 15th century, the area of Kota Kinabalu was under the influence of Bruneian Empire. In the 19th century, the British North Borneo Company (BNBC) first set up a settlement near the Gaya Island. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1897 by a freedom fighter named Mat Salleh. In July 1899, the place which is located opposite to the Gaya Island, was identified as a suitable place for settlements. Development in the area was started soon after that; and the place was named Api-api before it was renamed after the vice-chairman of BNBC as Jesselton. Jesselton became a major trading port in the area, and was connected to the North Borneo Railway. Jesselton suffered destructions during World War II. Japanese occupation of Jesselton had caused several local uprisings but they were eventually defeated by the Japanese. After the war, BNBC was unable to finance the high cost of reconstructions and the place was ceded to the British Crown Colony. The British Crown declared Jesselton as the new capital of North Borneo in 1946 and started to rebuild the town. After the formation of Malaysia, North Borneo was reamed as Sabah. In 1967, Jesselton was renamed as Kota Kinabalu. Kota Kinabalu was granted city status in 2000.

Kota Kinabalu (pronounced [ˈkota kinaˈbalu]), formerly known as Jesselton,[1][2] is the capital of the state of Sabah, which is located in East Malaysia. It is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located along the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park[3] lies on its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located towards the east. Kota Kinabalu proper has a population of 452,058,[4] while the larger urban area, which includes the Penampang district, has an estimated population of 628,725.[4]
Kota Kinabalu is often known as KK within Malaysia and internationally. For the locals it is also known as Api-Api.[5] It is a major fishing destination and a popular gateway for travellers visiting Sabah and Borneo.[2][6] Kinabalu National Park is located about 90 kilometres from the city and there are many tourist attractions in and around the city. Kota Kinabalu is also one of the major industrial and commercial centres of East Malaysia. These two factors combine to make Kota Kinabalu one of the fastest growing cities in Malaysia.[7][8]
There are a number of cultural venues in Kota Kinabalu. The Sabah State Museum, situated near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, is the main museum of Sabah.[3] In the vicinity of the museum are the Science and Technology Centre, Sabah Art Gallery, and the Ethno Botanic Gardens. Wisma Budaya Art Gallery in the city centre hosts some national as well as regional art exhibitions. The Hongkod Koisaan building in Penampang is home to the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA).[92] It hosts the annual Kaamatan or Harvest Festival and the Unduk Ngadau beauty contest, which is held concurrently, in March. Monsopiad Cultural Village (Kampung Monsopiad) features cultural shows related to the Kadazan-Dusun culture. It is named after the legendary Kadazan-Dusun headhunting warrior, Monsopiad.[93]
Kota Kinabalu also features a number of shopping malls. These include Kompleks Karamunsing, Centre Point, Wisma Merdeka, Warisan Square, Plaza Wawasan, Kompleks Asia City,[3] City Mall, KK Plaza, Suria Sabah and 1Borneo, which is the largest hypermall in Kota Kinabalu.[69] Newly constructed malls in Kota Kinabalu include the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, which currently holds GSC Kota Kinabalu, and Megalong Shopping Mall, which is situated in the district of Penampang.[69] Karamunsing, where Kompleks Karamunsing is situated, is an area that has more computer shops per capita than anywhere else in Sabah.[110] The weekly Gaya Street Sunday Market features a gathering of local hawkers selling a wide range of items from traditional ethnic cultural souvenirs to pets and flowers.[111] The Kota Kinabalu Handicraft Market (formerly known as the Filipino Market) features vendors selling traditional handicrafts, souvenirs and foodstuffs.[112]
There are many leisure spots and conserved areas in and around Kota Kinabalu. Anjung Samudra (KK Waterfront) is a waterfront entertainment spot in the city centre which features restaurants, cafes, pubs, and a nightclub. The Royal Sabah Turf Club in Tanjung Aru hosts weekly horse racing events but has since closed and moved to Tambalang Race Course in Tuaran due to the expansion of Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The North Borneo Railway, which begins its journey from Tanjung Aru station, offers a scenic tour of the countryside in the West Coast Division and the Interior Division.[15] The railway journey ends in the town of Tenom.[15] Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club near the city centre was built on reclaimed land.[3] It features a golf and country club, a marina, and two hotels.
Tanjung Aru, located about 6 kilometres from the city centre, is one of the beaches along the West Coast. Its name was derived from the casuarina trees (locally called Aru trees) that grow on the shoreline.[97] The beach is over 2 kilometres in length and is complemented with a number food and drink stalls, restaurants, and night entertainment clubs. In the vicinity of Tanjung Aru lies the Kinabalu Golf Club, Prince Philip Botanical Park, KK Yacht Club, and Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Beach Resort. This beach is famous for its sunset.[98][99]

Trip Through North Borneo 1907
Opening with a train journey, the film shows views from the train as it passes through a village and crosses a bridge. The camera is next on a boat, showing rapids, the jungle, locals on a raft and members of the expedition fording the stream. This is followed by scenes of the local industries. Locals quarry for manganese ore, gather rubber from a tree (watched by Europeans) and pick and sort tobacco leaves from the fields. Further scenes reveal locals at a trading post and performing for the camera. Next, Chinese convicts collect their food, before a sequence showing a European supervising two locals as they chop a sago palm tree. Once felled, the trunk is sawed off and buffaloes (ridden by locals) haul the logs off screen. Local boys take part in a swimming race - diving off a gangway, watched by a European figure rowing alongside - before the film concludes with further shots of the buffaloes, driven into, and crossing, the water.

The Kudat formation is divided into three major lithological unit, namely the lower, middle and upper units based on significant changes in the composition of the sediments.[3] The lower unit consisted mostly of sandstone and mudstone with the sandy beds predominating, the middle unit consisted of sandstone and mudstone with some occurrence of limestone beds and lenses, and the upper unit consisted of sandstone and mudstone of various proportions mainly in the southern part of the Peninsula.
The original name of Tanjung Sampang Mangazou comes from the language of the indigenous Rungus, an ethnic group which resides mainly in the district of Kudat. The words Tanjung (cape), Sampang (union) and Mangazou (battle) refers to this location of a battle that occurred when the ethnic Rungus defended their territory against the attack from Moro Pirates. According to legend, this place was a favourite landing point for the pirates.[
Local Chinese people referring the place as Den Foh Liew, which in Hakka means lighthouse due to a lighthouse on a nearby island of Kalampunian Island can be seen from here. The lighthouse also serves as a reminder of treacherous coastline and past shipwrecks since during the Chinese dynasties era of Song, Ming and Qing, many Chinese trading vessels were capsized while on their way to Celebes Islands, to reach Moluccas (which is known as the Spice Islands). During the famous circumnavigation era, Ferdinand Magellan fleet supposedly went here to perform repairs on his ships.
The tip is one of Sabah's popular tourist attractions. Within the area, there is a park-like grounds with a Malaysian flag pole and a large bronze globe which opened since 2004. The bronze globe marks the location of the Borneo Island tip at latitude 7 degrees north and longitude 116 degrees east with a map featuring the island embossed in bronze and laid on a flat surface at an angle with inscriptions to mark the tip. Over the years, several infrastructure and public amenities have been erected at the site which including a public rest area with a café, souvenir shop and washrooms. In the park-like grounds, it has become one of the destination to view sunsets and full moons.

ORANGUTAN SANCTUARY in BORNEO MALAYSIA - Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre (STOP PALM OIL!!)
We learned so much when visiting the ORANGUTAN SANCTUARY at Sepilok Rehabilitation Center in BORNEO MALAYSIA. On our way to the center, we found out that PALM OIL is causing a huge problem in deforestation in MALAYSIA. The interest in palm oil has wiped out 50% of the animals in 30 years here in Malaysia. These are some of the few remaining orangutans and sun bears left in the world. The rehabilitation center cares for orangutans who were once exotic pets, served in the circus, or other captivating circumstances. The center cares for them and releases them back into the wild when they are ready. In addition, the center is NOT a ZOO. It is completely open so animals are free to roam wherever they please. We hope you learn as much as we did when watching this video!
