Ferrying Up The Bosporus Straight in Istanbul Turkey
Taking the ferry up the Bosphorus Strait from Istanbul is a treat for visitors and locals alike. This little trek was on Way's bucket list and it was a beautiful day for a ferry ride.
We opted to forgo a tour and took the regular Bosphorus Line ferry to Anadolu Kavağı, at the top of the Strait as it meets the Black Sea. What we found was a charming little village and a climb up Joshua's Hill. On top of the hill is Yoros Castle, which protected Turkey from invasions coming via the Black Sea.
It was a lovely day and definitely worth the time. All in all, we left the dock around 9:00 a.m. and returned around 4:30 p.m. We did stop at a Turkish pastry cart and stocked up for the trip. Turkish pastries - YUM!
We suggest sitting on the same side of the boat going up and back so you can see the Asia side one-way and the European side the other.
We had three hours in Anadolu Kavağı which was enough for lunch and the hike up the hill. The ferry cost us about $5 each for a roundtrip on the ferry.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).

Turkish luxury property booming on the Bosphorus
Originally built as wooden summer mansions, these houses are called yali, a term derived from the Greek yialos, or seashore.
There are only a few hundred left from the period between the 17th and early 20th centuries when they were owned by Ottoman princes, sultans and aristocrats.
They line both sides of the 30 kilometre Bosphorus strait that divides Asia and Europe.
They are crafted in opulent styles such as Ottoman, Art Nouveau, Neo Baroque or Neoclassical, according to the period in which they were built.
Around 200 are considered historical landmarks, and according to the local heritage regulations the owners must keep their original design and interior decorations.
That means a continuous and expensive maintenance for these fragile luxuries.
A retired media owner, Mustafa zkan, bought his 19th-century yali in 1979 and renovated it.
He says that he missed the seaside, as he was born in the coastal city of Mersin.
The zkans are some of the few owners who live permanently in their yali, which is decorated with original furniture and an impressive art collection, one of the family passions for the last four decades.
I am very happy to live here, says zkan. The seaside, Istanbul and life in the Bosphorus are wonderful.
His wife, Cevahir zkan, says: There is not a better place in the world than the Bosphorus.
The architect of this project, Cafer Bozkurt, is an established yali renovator.
He is a member of the Historical Heritage Committee in Istanbul and specialises in restoring historical buildings.
Bozkurt is especially proud of the zkan Yali renovation, which took more than two years in the early 1980s and was based on old measured drawings, ruins and photographs.
A specially built quay protects the mansion from vibrations caused by traffic along the river.
He says that although originally these mansions were summer residences, today many are adapted for the winter.
Since the mid-1970s, there has been a ban on building houses along the Bosphorus, so the rarity of these mansions has increased their market value.
The architect considers yali as a part of the cultural value of the Bosphorus, so, he says, they shouldn't be object of speculative or commercial interests.
Jessica Tamtrk, a Belgian-born, California-raised writer, is the owner of one of these yali through her marriage to a Turkish businessman who inherited the property.
The Fazil Bey, as it is called, is a pink 19th-century 'yali' on the Asian side of the river. It is rented to foreign tenants.
Tamtrk says that, according to regulations, for a yali to be considered a landmark it must have a direct connection to history, be situated on the Bosphorus seafront, built in wood and have boat access.
She says that owning a yali is a status symbol across the Middle East; not only because of their value, but also because of the millions of dollars of maintenance involved.
Now more and more Arabs are coming in and renting 'yalis' for the summer, as our forefathers used to do 70 years ago, because these houses were used as summer residences, says Tamtrk.
According to real estate sources, the two most powerful families in Turkey, the Sabanci and the Ko, are competing to buy yalis.
Until 2009, Sabanci family members have bought at least 17 yalis and the Ko family has five.
The Embassy of Qatar is bidding to buy one of the biggest yali on the European side - the Sehzade Burhanettin Yali - for more than 100 million US dollars, the deal is expected to be completed soon.
The Shehzade Burhanettin Efendi was built in 1880 and has more than 64 rooms, according to Turkish newspaper hrriyet.
The prices of the yalis show no sign of stalling, despite the recent political unrest and protests .

Ship crashes into Million Dollar Waterfront Mansion in Istanbul's Bosphorus Caught on Cameras !
Ship crashes into waterfront mansion in Istanbul after rudder gets stuck. The Bosphorus Strait has been closed to transit traffic after a 225-meter-long Malta-flagged bulk carrier crashed into a historic waterfront mansion in the Anadolu Hisarı area on Saturday after its rudder got stuck, causing substantial damage.
The accident happened after the ship's rudder failed and it smashed into the Hekimbaşı Salih Efendi mansion around 4 p.m. The mansion was built in the 18th century and has been used to host weddings and concerts, according to the mansion's website
The vessel named Vitaspirit was heading to Ukraine from Egypt. No injuries or environmental threats have been reported from the accident.
The scene of the accident was under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge on Istanbul's Asian side, the coast of which is dotted with posh mansions dating back to Ottoman times. Accidents involving ships crashing into those mansions are rare, with vessels escaping the impact at the last minute occasionally.
Turkey's straits are among the most at-risk waterways in the world, according to experts. Over 50,000 vessels, including tankers carrying highly flammable oil, pass through the Bosporus, an S-shaped channel with sharp turns and changing currents that pose challenges for vessels and sailors every year.
The deadliest accident was when a Romanian tanker and a Greek freighter collided and exploded in November 1979, killing 42 crew members aboard the Romanian tanker. The last major accident in the strait was in 2003 when a Georgian-flagged vessel ran aground, resulting in a spill of 480 tons of oil.
