Protecting Bowers Beach
JANUARY 25, 2019 -- Beach replenishment work will soon get underway at the Delaware Bay community of Bowers Beach. State Rep. Charles Postles is partnering with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) on the project to repair the beaches and dunes using sand trucked in from an inland source. Rep. Postles says the work will help defend the homes of local residents against flooding and keep roads in the town accessible to emergency responders.

In 1938 the Bowers Fire Co in Kent County, DE was formed. In 1938, the 1st modern fire truck was purchased from the Ogontz Fire Co in Cheltenham Twp, PA. To learn where we began, Past Chief Trowbridge and I visited Ogontz. Our 1st modern fire truck was a 1929 American LaFrance Type 91 COMB pumper purchased from them. This video is a tribute to our Founding Charter Members who began Our Company.
The 1st part of the video is from our trip to visit where Bowers FC began.. Our thanks to Past Chief Jack Washington, Chief Mike Moonblatt and Past President Phil Washington for helping us to understand where we began...

DELAWARE SINKING
HIGH SURF, ROUGH WAVES AND ERODING BEACHES ARE JUST SOME OF THE LASTING EFFECTS OF HERMINE.

I think the storm did'nt turn out to be as serverve as anticipated.
HURRICANE SEASON IS IN FULL SWIING AND THE WATER LEVEL IS ON THE RISE
PAUL BURDETT/ on cam
I think that dewey has a little bid of a natural protectiong because down in Indian River beach the shoreline comes in a little bit. Rehoboth seems to get more direct hits.
WITH EACH STORM THAT PASSES, DELAWARE IS SINKING AT A RATE OF 1.7 MM PER YEAR ACCORDING TO STATE CLIMATOLOGIST DAN LEATHERS
SEAN NOLAN/ON CAM
really erodes the beach then they have to drudge everything and it takes a while for everything to come back.
COUPLE THAT WITH THE SEA LEVEL RISING ABOUT 1-2 MM PER YEAR.
EXPERTS BELIEVE THE FUTURE COULD BE BURRIED FOR DELAWARE BEACHES
AJ/ON CAM
University of Delaware researchers say that bowers beach right here in Delaware has the highest elevated sea level along the atlantic coast.
BILL /ON CAM
Bowers Beach, if the water level keeps rising I don't think there is going to be a Bowers Beach. They get rain down there and that whole place is under water.
SOME BEACHES HAVE BEEN REPLENISHED BY A TECHNIQUE CALLED DREDGING.
BILL/ON CAM
DNREC is doing a great job replenishing the beaches. They are planting more sea grass to hold back the water.
DREDGING-- HELPS RESTORE THE BEACHES BUT ACCORDING TO DNREC IT COSTS THE STATE $130 MILLION OVER THE PAST DECADE
Paul/on cam
I have been coming down here for years, the beach is about the same size it was then as it is now. It has gotten smaller and larger at certain times.
FOR NOW DREDGING AND BEACH REPLENISHMENT ARE THE ONLY OPTIONS. BUT IN THE NEXT 15 YEARS WE COULD BE IN SOME DEEP WATER.
