Boyertown, a Distinctive Destination 2010 - Pt 2
Boyertown has countless offerings for an assortment of tourist in a walk-able
setting reminiscent of the early 1800s. The history buff will marvel at the Victorian architecture that is skillfully preserved. Restorations continue as a result of community efforts and pride of ownership. The foodies will enjoy the smells and flavors of the well known Grill Shop that has been the town centers greasy spoon for over 60 years while also serving as the home of one of the original Raccoon Club civic groups. Boyertown Saturday Farmers Market draws those interested in making their own while our many other eateries provide something for everyone. The shopping traveler will be delighted that our revitalized downtown offers several independently owned shops and galleries most of which are housed in historic buildings. The visitor who seeks entertainment will be thrilled by the varied schedule of events which Boyertown has to offer. Hometown parades, family events, art shows, A Holiday House Tour, Car Shows, an Oktoberfest, and a dog outing are just a few of the offerings. While in town, visitors can stroll through our historic streets, stop at the civic walkway to relax or stay at the Twin Turrets Inn (a downtown bed and breakfast operated by Boyertown's mayor) which was originally the home of the Boyers, Boyertown's founders. The charm of the town and the friendliness of its citizens will make the visitor leave our small Borough with the feeling of yearning for the days of yesteryear.
. The small community of Boyertown in itself is a hidden gem. But if one had to choose a gems that a visitor would not want to miss; Taylor Backes Glass Blowing Studio, The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, Twin Turrets Bed & Breakfast, and Studio B Art Gallery and Teaching Studio would top the list.
Thankfully we were chosen by the PA Department of Community and Economic Development to become a Main Street Community. This honor also provided $120,000 in state funding that allowed the community to set up a matching grant program in the Main Street area. These grants spurred over $240,000 in private investment in historic facade restoration, thus creating a domino effect. The momentum of community pride now has building owners restoring their properties on their own which has generated over half a million dollars of investment in community revitalization.
The Borough of Boyertown is proud to announce a walk score of 88 ( with everything needed within walking distance of the entire borough. In addition, the Boyertown Farmers Market (which accepts EBT), and many eating establishments are all within blocks of each other. The Boyertown community is now focused on creating green spaces such as pocket parks, sitting areas, and welcoming walkways. Beautification projects of areas that were in disrepair, such as the Community Walkway, the Civic Walkway, and the historic rail line crane are either complete or on the drawing board. In addition, Boyertown is in the midst of re-designing its streetscape to make it more historically compatible and more inviting to the visitor and resident alike.
The borough's National Register-eligible historic district of Downtown Boyertown is a designated Main Street Program; the Twin Turrets Inn is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, The Boyertown Opera House, General Carl Spaaz's home, the Boyertown Inn, St. John and Good Shepherd Churches, are all historic sites, as well as many homes in the borough.
The Twin Turrets Inn, the original home of the Boyer family, has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast which is owned and operated by the Mayor of Boyertown. The dining and shopping experiences in Boyertown unique to the area since everything is independently owned and operated and many of the products sold in the local shops are created by local crafters. The phenomenon of Boyertown shopping is best demonstrated by the fact that we still have an independently owned and operated drug store which has been the mainstay of our downtown for 75 years. Boyertown is steeped with history. Boyertown is host to the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles, Clayote Clay Studio and Gallery, Studio B Gallery and Teaching Studio, Taylor Backes Glass Studio and the historic Boyertown Inn, just to name a few.
