Niterói and Niemeyer / Brazil Travel Vlog #184 / The Way We Saw It
Today, we are discovering another side of Rio de Janeiro, a city that is part of Rio de Janeiro state but not of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Niteroi lies on the other side of Guanabara bay and has a much more relaxed and laid back atmosphere. It houses the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum designed by the world famous architect Oscan Niemeyer, the same man who designed most of the Brazilian nations capital city, Brasilia.
Follow us on this sunny day to beautiful Niterói ending at the Niterói City Park or Parque da Cidade.

Jungle art museum faces wilds of Brazil crisis
Brazilian millionaire Bernardo Paz has dedicated his life to turning a vast outdoor park of tropical rainforest studded with contemporary art works into one of the most original museums in the world

Visit our friends in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro on December 27, 2007.
Niterói is a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast region of Brazil. This city was founded on November 22, 1573 by the Tupi Amerindian chief Araribóia (who later was converted to Roman Catholicism and given the Christian name of Martim Afonso, after the Portuguese explorer Martim Afonso de Sousa). It makes Niteroi the only Brazilian city to have been founded by a non-Christian, non-assimilated Brazilian Amerindian.
The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói — MAC) is situated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is one of the city's main landmarks. It was completed in 1996.
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer with the assistance of structural engineer Bruno Contarini, who had worked with Niemeyer on earlier projects, the MAC-Niterói is 16 meters high; its cupola has a diameter of 50 meters with three floors. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (Bon Voyage, Good Journey), the 817-square meter reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base like a flower, in the words of Niemeyer.
A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. The saucer-shaped modernist structure, which has been likened to a UFO, is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. In the film Oscar Niemeyer, an architect committed to his century, Niemeyer is seen flying over Rio de Janeiro in a UFO which then lands on the site, suggesting this to be the origin of the museum.
Guanabara Bay on its Western shore lays the city of Rio de Janeiro, and on its Eastern shore the cities of Niterói and São Gonçalo. Four other municipalities surround the bay's shores. Guanabara Bay is the second largest bay in area in Brazil (after the All Saints' Bay), at 412 square kilometers (159 sq mi), with a perimeter of 143 kilometers (89 mi).
Guanabara Bay is 31 kilometers (19 mi) long and 28 kilometers (17 mi) wide at its maximum. Its 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mi) wide mouth is flanked at the eastern tip by the Pico do Papagaio (Parrot's Peak) and the western tip by Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).
Rio de Janeiro, commonly referred to simply as Rio, is the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the second largest city of Brazil, and the third largest metropolitan area and agglomeration in South America, 6th largest in the Americas, and 26th in the world.
The city was the capital of Brazil for nearly two centuries, from 1763 to 1815 during the Portuguese colonial era, 1815 to 1821 as the capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves, and from 1822 to 1960 as an independent nation. Rio is nicknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa or Marvelous City.
President Costa e Silva Bridge, commonly known as the Rio-Niteroi Bridge, is a box girder bridge located at Guanabara Bay, in the State of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It connects the cities of Rio de Janeiro and the municipality of Niterói. It is currently the longest prestressed concrete bridge in the southern hemisphere, and the sixth longest in the world. From its completion in 1974 until 1985 it was the world's second-longest bridge, second only to Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
Fort Coligny was a fortress founded by Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1555, in what constituted the so-called France Antarctique historical episode.
For protection against attacks by hostile Indians and the Portuguese, Villegaignon built the fortress with the help of the 500 colonists who travelled with him in two ships armed by the king of France, on a small island called Serigipe by the Indians of the region, near the mouth of the large Guanabara Bay.
The Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra 1765 is located on the eastern side of the bar of Guanabara Bay , in the neighborhood of Jurujuba , municipality of Niterói , State of Brazil 's Rio de Janeiro.
Crossing fire to Fort St. John and the Fort Tamandaré Laje , was the main defensive structure of the bar of Guanabara Bay and the city and port of Rio de Janeiro during the Colony and the Empire. It is furnished to the present day, attracting an average of two thousand visitors per month, guided tours, every hour, lasting about 45 minutes. He is currently the headquarters of the Division Artillery of the 1st Army Division .
Some authors repeat, incorrectly, that the early occupation of the site dates back to an improvised defense by Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon the entrance of the bar (1555), with two artillery pieces and forces occupied by Portuguese in the context of campaign 1565 - 1567 , forgotten that the narratives of coeval sources apply to trying to install a battery in the Flagstone Island, fortified by the Portuguese much later.

The Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói — MAC) is situated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is one of the city’s main landmarks. It was completed in 1996.

The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (“Bon Voyage,” “Good Journey”) beach and also a neighborhood, the 817 square metres (8,790 sq ft) reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base “like a flower,” in the words of Niemeyer.[citation needed]
A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, through which can be seen Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain.
The MAC Scandal was a political scandal that surrounded the acquisition of land for the museum. The sub-mayor of Niterói's Oceanic Region, Zeca Mocarzel, convinced the owner of the land that constructions rights were locked by the city council and, therefore, were able to purchase the land at a low price. When the mayor, Jorge Roberto Silveira, sent the museum project to the city council to obtain the rights to construction, it was accepted in only two days. After the inauguration of the MAC, which substantially increased the property values of nearby areas, the land was sold for more than 5 million reals, approximately 1,250,000 US dollars in 1996. Because the land deal took place just before Christmas, the people of Niterói said that it was a Christmas present that Jorge Roberto Silveira, Zeca Mocarzel and João Sampaio's (another long-time Niterói's politician) gave to themselves.

STORYLINE:
On December 5th 2012 renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, whose trademark sensuous curves in reinforced concrete are synonymous with Brazilian architecture, died.
He was 104 years old.
Niemeyer was best known for designing Brazil's capital, Brasilia, on the country's empty central plains as a symbol of the nation's future.
Niemeyer was taken to hospital in Rio de Janeiro on November 2nd after a cold that he caught several weeks before led to dehydration, which compromised his kidneys.
A bout of bleeding in his digestive tract in November complicated his health.
In a statement released earlier on December 5th, Rio de Janeiro's Samaritano Hospital said Niemeyer was in a grave state and getting worse.
The hospital said a respiratory infection meant the architect continued to require a ventilator and was also sedated. Niemeyer was also suffering from kidney failure.
A spokeswoman for the Hospital Samaritano confirmed Niemeyer's passing but did not give a cause of death.
Niemeyer designed much of Brazil's futuristic capital of Brasilia as well as Rio's Sambadrome, where the city's annual carnival parade is held.
In works from Brasilia's crown-shaped cathedral to the undulating French Communist Party building in Paris, Niemeyer shunned the steel-box structures of many modernist architects, finding inspiration in nature's crescents and spirals.
His hallmarks include much of the United Nations complex in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in Niteroi, which is perched like a flying saucer across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro.
Right angles don't attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man, he wrote in his 1998 memoir 'The Curves of Time'.
What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find in mountains, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the woman we love.
Speaking to the Associated Press in 2007, Niemeyer said the important thing is for the architect to do what he likes to do, and not what others would like him to do. I follow this path.
His curves give sweep and grace to Brasilia, the city that opened up Brazil's vast interior in the 1960s and moved the nation's capital from coastal Rio.
Niemeyer designed most of the city's important buildings, while French-born, avant-garde architect Lucio Costa crafted its distinctive airplane-like layout.
Niemeyer left his mark in the flowing concrete of the Cabinet ministries and the monumental dome of the national museum.
Living well past the century mark, Niemeyer's journey mirrored that of his beloved Brazil, and his restless modernism captured the developing country's sweeping ambitions.
With hundreds of his buildings dotting the landscape, arguably no other architect shared as tight a bond with a country as Niemeyer did with Brazil.
Oscar Niemeyer Soares Filho was born on December 15, 1907, in Rio de Janeiro, and earned his architecture degree at Rio's School of Fine Arts.
Working in Costa's office in 1936, he helped design a Rio education ministry building that was a classic of functionalist horizontal and vertical lines.
Niemeyer teamed up again with Le Corbusier in 1947 to design much of the United Nations complex in New York.
