Bregenz Festival: Carmen / time lapse of building the stage on the lake
The Stage Construction:
As from October 2016, Carmen’s world was created at Lake Constance. The construction took about seven months to complete. 37 companies were involved in the production and construction work. Divers, who were also confronted with ice flows in January, were used to assemble the individual components under the sea stage.
The Cards:
A card game for giants! A card measures 4.3 by 7 metres, and they are made from solid wooden boards. The finely crafted pattern was painted with templates on the workshop stage of the festival theatre, or glued using a printed net. In the middle of the stage,
three cards are attached to a turntable which rests on the concrete core of the sea stage in the rear area. Steel tubes allow the cards to fly. The substructure is approximately 20 metres high, and 26 metres wide. Manufactured in Nüziders, in Vorarlberg, the 26 tons of individual components were hoisted from an articulated truck by a construction crane onto the concrete core of the sea stage. The horizontal cards are supported by steel as well, although these also rest upon wooden posts, which were sunk up to six metres into the lake. 119 posts were used for the complete stage set.
The Hand:
The depiction of human body parts is one of the greatest challenges in stage presentation. The hand of the stage designer, Es Devlin herself, was used as the appropriate model, which was reworked several times by the stage sculptor Frank Schulze.
Carmen’s hands were created in a tent near the festival theatre. In the winter of 2016, partially in minus temperatures, work on the interior of the forearms and hands began. They had to weigh as little as possible, so as not to overtax the wooden supports in
the lake. This is why steel is mainly found in the interior of the constructions.

Build Carmen - Lena Belkina as Carmen at Bregenz Festival 2018
Lena Belkina - Carmen

Bregenzer Festspiele 2018
Lena Belkina created a Carmen which is completely her own. This can undoubtedly be attributed to the inner delicacy of the singer’s personality, which the Italians call animo gentile. Lena is quite petite and is blessed with an expressive, beautiful and gentle face. Performing such a femme fatale as Carmen is seemingly very difficult, if not impossible for her. But she “customizes” the role of a gypsy who does not tolerate shackles, and the result is excellent...
Lena Belkina is a rare singer, a true artist of bel canto: she never resorts to affectation and pressure, treasuring the perfection of the vocal line. At first it was difficult to imagine that Carmen would be so good for her voice, which seemed to wholeheartedly belong to Rossini's Cinderella. However, Carmen turns out to be a miraculous fit for this gentle, delicate and deep voice. The singer aces the role in terms of language and accents, voicing the widest range of feelings, from a genuine love interest to subtle irony.

Verdi: Aida from Bregenz Festival
Graham Vick's spectacular production of Aida on the open air floating stage at Bregenz must count as one of the most visually striking ever. (Classic FM Magazine). Carlo Rizzi conducts the Wiener Symphoniker, chorus and soloists, who include Iano Tamar (Amneris) and Tatiana Serjan (Aida).
W.A. Mozart - Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) from Bregenz Festival
What begins like a fairy-tale turns into a whimsical fantasy halfway between magic farce and Masonic mysticism: The Magic Flute links a love story with the great questions of the Enlightenment, juxtaposes bird-catcher charm with queenly vengeance, and bewitches the listener with music that mixes cheerful melodies, lovers’ arias, showstopping coloraturas and mysterious chorales. W. A. Mozart’s opera premiered in 1791 and is one of the most often performed operas in the world. The production on the Bregenz Festival lake stage impresses the
audience with a fantastic setting framed by three dog-dragons, each of them more than twenty meters in height. “David Pountney finds stunning answers to the everlasting questions surrounding ‘The Magic Flute’.” (Tagesspiegel) “The ‘play on the lake’ in Bregenz takes the audience into a fantasy world.” (Salzburger Nachrichten)

Georges Bizet‘s captivating music with its Spanish sounds took the world by storm: Carmen‘s Habanera and Seguidilla, like Escamillo‘s Toreador‘s Song, are known to one and all. The French composer‘s most successful opera is staged on the world’s largest, spectacular floating stage of Lake Constance in Bregenz, with a set designed by British artist Es Devlin. She has designed sets for pop stars like Adele, U2, Take That, the Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West. In collaboration with the stage director Kasper Holten, Director of Opera at the Royal Opera House in London, she has also worked at opera houses in Helsinki and Copenhagen, at the Theater an der Wien and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. For the Danish stage director, this opera about destiny and obsession centres on two people who are treated as outsiders, whose paths cross and who cling to each other in a passionate but unhealthy relationship.
„The lake-stage in Bregenz is a venue for theatrical spectaculars, and Kasper Holten’s production of Carmen on Es Devlin’s extraordinary set was a knockout.“ (The Telegraph)
Grand Opera marries pop show this year at the Bregenz Festival. And it works! (ZDF Heute Journal)
„The French singer Gaëlle Arquez proves to be a lucky find. Not only her massive, shimmering mezzo-soprano is convincing, but her high-quality acting skills as well.” (Salzburger Nachrichten)
„In terms of sound and, above all, visual finesse, the Carmen in Bregenz is opulent … and brilliant opera show.“ Wiener Zeitung

Bregenz Festival │The Floating Opera Stage - Setting: AIDA 2009/10
'The Floating Opera Stage' is surely the ultimate cultural highlight of Vorarlberg's capital, Bregenz. The city is located in the western most federal state, Vorarlberg, of Austria.
The reason why the festival stage might be floating is because the stage itself is truly floating near the seaside of Lake Constance in Bregenz. Every two years, they stage a certain opera from music history. Imagine you are watching an opera under the star sparkling night sky of Austria feels just great and romantic. It will be a breathtaking event you never ever forget.
Besides the festival, the city of Bregenz also presents itself in a kind of Mediterranean light: warm climate, palm trees and the sea. There's stuff for every mood - one the one hand you got the mountains in the background of the city and on the the other hand if you feel like having a blast somewhere in the water, feel free to do so. All the small sidewalk cafés and bars bring the whole image down to a round figure.
