Brimbank Park Good Neighbour Program
Local residents are helping Parks Victoria to erect a rabbit proof fence as part of DSE's Good Neighbour Program. The fence will stop the movement of rabbits from Brimbank Park to adjoining urban gardens. The three year program hopes to establish more than 2km of fencing.

The Good Neighbour program operates on public land to reduce the impact of weeds and pests on adjoining private land.
Penny Gillespie, Good Neighbour Program:
The Good Neighbour program enables public land managers to have a positive working relationship with neighbours. It allows them to say yes, we can come onboard.
Stefan Kaiser, Statewide Pests and Weeds, DSE:
Certainly we consider the values on public land as well but the primary purpose of Good Neighbour is to protect those assets on private land adjoining public land.

Brimbank Park Rabbit Control, Keilor. In response to requests from over 50 local residents, Parks Victoria are fencing the public land boundary to exclude rabbits from adjoining urban gardens.
Sue Jennison, Keilor Residents and Rate Payers Association:
Neighbours were talking and I'm president of the local Keilor Residents & Ratepayers Association and we thought well this is something that's affecting a whole lot of people, apart from the fact of the park being our neighbour and such like that and people were concerned because their gardens were being eaten up. We got together and said there is a problem and then how can we solve it.
Brooke Ryan, Ranger in Charge - Maribyrnong Valley Parklands:
I received a petition from the community about their concerns of the rabbit plague as they described it. So we had a community rabbit meeting which was the first that I'd ever held. We had 70 members of the public turn up wanting to know if we were doing anything and from that I got a real sense that the community wanted to have a bit of ownership on the park and also be involved in the program.
Mark Gutterson, Ranger:
At this site we had a real need to prevent the free movement of the rabbits. So the best solution was to install this rabbit proof fence.
Brooke Ryan:
I think we had in excess of 25 community members turn up on the day and assist us to put the fence up.
Mark Gutterson:
There were people of all ages, there were children, there were grandparents and everyone in between and they all came along with all their gear ready to get involved. It was a very hands on project. Since the installation of the fence the site has begun to recover. You can see on the resident's side the grasses are recovering. We still have more work to do on the park side but that will happen during a stage process. This has been a good example of working with the local community.
Sue Jennison:
I think people often feel powerless. They often see that there is a problem or a potential problem but they don't actually know how to go about it. But I think the key to it all has been that you've had your authorities working together with the neighbourhood as well.

In Keilor, I think.
Day out with family and hubby months ago to show him the local Aussie sites. I want to go again, walk for longer on the hills, get better footage, get him to stop playing with trees and say he has to go to work, and for me to be allowed to drive there!
