HIKING ALASKA 2 - Byron Glacier Trail, Chugach National Forest
Take a journey to one of Alaska's most accsessible Glaciers. Byron Glacier is just one hour from Anchorage. Visitor info and maps.
Byron Glacier Hiking Trail
Forty-nine miles (78 km.) south of Anchorage, AK, on the Seward Highway, the Portage Glacier Highway passes through the Portage Valley for 5 miles (8 km.) to the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center. A mile (1.5 km.) past this Visitor Center on the Byron Glacier Road, a 1.4 mile (2.2 km.) flat hiking trail leads to the eroded end of the Byron Glacier. The trail leads through alder thickets before joining the shallow, wide and rock-filled glacial Byron Creek.
Far above, on the flank of the Byron Peak (4590 ft. / 1400 m.), the Byron Glacier is a jumble of rock-hard white and blue ice pillars — a distant, challenging area for technical ice climbers. By contrast, where the Byron Creek emerges as melt-water from under the remnant end of the glacier, the eroded glacial ice is heavily streaked with bands of dark gravel, and this area gives casual hikers a chance to stroll onto a small portion of an actual glacier.
Byron Glacier
Early June (2015) went out on to hike/walk Byron Glacier next to Portage. Pretty easy and fun hike, although we didn't see much of a Glacier Cave as we had hoped to find. Went in the winter again and definitely saw a ice cave-ish dome, which we went under of course! Head out there if you're ever looking for a slightly easier trail!
Recommend: Easy/Beginner
Time: 30-35 Mins/Depending Pace
Yelp Review:
Address:
At mile 79, Seward Highway (49 miles south of Anchorage), turn north onto Portage Valley Road. Travel 6 miles (past Begich, Boggs Visitor Center) to trailhead parking. Trail is closed to motorized vehicles all year.

Helicopter and Dog Sledding on a Glacier in Alaska - Seward
There are some glaciers you can drive to, but very few that you can stroll to. Just 15 miles from Seward—where many cruises embark and disembark—Exit Glacier is one of the most popular road-accessible glaciers in the state. In fact, you can walk almost right up to the face of it in 30 minutes, by way of the Edge of the Glacier Trail.
Exit Glacier is not huge, but it looks big up close, so it makes a great place for photos. It’s also a good spot to learn about glacial movement, since it’s receding quickly; there's even a guide marking its recession over the past 120 years.
The well-developed trails here have good footing and interpretive signs, explaining the return of plant life after the ice. There’s also a self-guided audio tour on The Alaska App, narrated by the Park Service’s chief interpretive ranger.
If you’re looking for more of an adventure, take the Harding Icefield Trail, which climbs 3,500 feet in 4 miles, and gives great views of the glacier. There are also guided hikes on the glacier, if you want to strap on crampons and walk on the ice.

We went through a snowstorm on our way to Byron Glacier, which the road to it was closed, but we parked and went back anyhow. It was super windy at Byron Glacier and a snowstorm. So we only got one mile back. Below is what we did!
Day 1:
- Flew Alaska Airlines into Anchorage, Alaska. Arrived in Wasilla at 3AM.
- Hiked the Bodenburg Butte Trail. Super icy, but worth it!
- Hit the Carr's grocery store for supplies for the week
Day 2:
- Went to Talkeetna and viewed Denali. Very cloudy though.
- Ate at Denali Brew Pub. Had Reindeer Meatloaf!
- Hiked the Palmer Hay Flats
Day 3: Drove to Byron Glacier, which the road was closed. But we parked and went back a mile anyhow. It was a snowstorm, very windy and snowy as you could see. Very bad audio due to the wind and weather conditions.
Day 4:
- Drove to Girdwood and snowmobiled through Glacier City Snowmobile Tours. Very much worth the money. We had signed up for a glacier tour, but it was cancelled due to weather. So we did the scenic tour and it was a blast, We had an awesome guide.
- Checked into Alyeska Resort
Day 5:
- Did a few hours of snowshoeing around Alyeska Resort
- Went to Seven Glacier Restaurant. Which was AMAZING!

Girdwood, AK: September hike on the Winner Creek Trail
From the Alyeska Resort at Girdwood, AK, a perfectly-maintained 2.5 mile (4 km) hiking trail leads to the Winner Creek gorge in the Chugach National Forest. This trail has a groomed crushed stone surface, complemented by sturdy boardwalks when the trail crosses damp areas. Free trailhead parking is available in the hotel’s overflow parking areas, and the trail itself starts close to the bottom terminus of the Alyeska Aerial Tram.
The Winner Creek Trail passes through a temperate rain forest, lush with a deep green undergrowth of mosses and ferns. In the Fall, massed colonies of Devil’s Club give a splash of bright red berry clusters held above yellowing autumnal leaves. In September, scattered on the forest floor, clumps of fungi also add ivory-white, orange, and tan color accents to the overall green shades of the rain forest.
At the Winner Creek gorge, large riverside boulders provide a moist home for mosses and ferns, and form a plant grotto for the steely-blue pure waters of the creek as it cascades over riffles and plunges through narrow waterfall passages.

Tonsina Point Trail in Seward, Alaska || Best Family Hikes in Alaska { ExploreFam 11}
One of the best family hikes in Seward, Alaska is Tonsina Point Trail. It's 3.5 miles roundtrip, and while it's definitely got some steep hills, our littles did great! You get beautiful views of Resurrection Bay, while crossing some little streams that will entertain your kids. This definitely ranks fairly high in our best family hikes in Alaska.
Tonsina Point Trailhead is located in the Caines State Recreation area, just above the beautiful Lowell Point Beach. There are opportunities to take this trail much further than Tonsina Point, but please read up on them and learn about avoiding the tide, as well as see if it is right for your family!

I made this trip in May/June, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Portage Glacier Hike
The Hike out to Portage Glacier is only about 2.5 to 3 miles out across Portage Lake to the glacier from the parking lot at Begich Boggs Visitor Center in South Central Alaska. The experience and view are worth the 3-4 hours you might spend there. Even small children are making the journey under supervision. There is wind often times, it can be cold, so dress accordingly. Check with conditions before heading out as we get closer to spring. Micro spikes might be a good idea, but you can also run into snow drifts that can slow the walk down. The video is only 7.5 minutes long, so take a look. If you like the video tap the thumbs up button. Thanks for watching, be safe.
