Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens
The Byzantine and Christian Museum, which is based in Athens, is one of Greece’s national museums. Its areas of competency are centred on religious artefacts of the Early Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, post-Byzantine and later periods which it exhibits, but also acquires, receives, preserves, conserves, records, documents, researches, studies, publishes and raises awareness of.
The museum has over 25,000 artefacts in its possession. The artefacts date from between the 3rd and 20th century AD, and their provenance encompasses the entire Greek world, as well as regions in which Hellenism flourished. The size and range of the collections and value of the exhibits makes the Museum a veritable treasury of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and culture.
Hermitage Exhibition at Byzantine and Christian Museum (Athens)
02 November 2016 until 07 March 2017
The exhibition with Treasures from the Collections of the State Hermitage Museum is the culmination of a series of exhibitions and events which the Byzantine and Christian Museum staged in 2016 to celebrate the dedicatory cross-cultural year ‘Greece in Russia, Russia in Greece 2016’. Significant archaeological treasures and works of art that come from the imperial collections of the State Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg are displayed in the galleries of the Museum for the first time ever. Objects of superb aesthetic and artistic value, which the Czars of the Romanov dynasty collected incessantly for two centuries, initiated by Peter the Great (1672–1725), established since the late 17th century the immensely rich collections of the Hermitage, thereby turning it from 1805 onwards into one of the largest and most significant Museums in the world.
The exhibition which the Byzantine and Christian Museum designed is centered on selected archaeological artefacts, works or art, objects of minor arts and paintings that come from the main collections which comprise the State Hermitage Museum, and simultaneously introduces the museum audience to the way art and its aesthetics were perceived and construed in Europe and to life in the Russian court.

Un-builtphobia / Α-κτιστοφοβία
Part of an installation within the framework of Un-built, a series of events staged in 2008 at the Byzantine & Christian Museum in Athens, Greece, dealing with issues of architecture; our installation was a satire of the lack of public spaces in Greek cities. It is as if modern Greeks suffer horror vacui at the sight of open urban spaces and rush to build... The Corinthian capital is in the Benaki Museum and was used by the sculptor Costas Varotsos in an exhibition there in 2007. Our use of the capital is in tribute to his.

Byzantine Treasures in Athens
Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο Αθηνών / Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, Greece
