The Birthplace of Dadaism
WWI, Cabaret Voltaire & the beginnings of Dada
This is an excerpt from my documentary-in-progress on the dada movement, titled, Random Acts of Beauty: The Story of Dada. The assassination of Austria's Archduke Francis Ferdinand in 1914, plunges Europe into war. The United States and Switzerland remained neutral, but because of it's proximity, Switzerland became the destination of choice for those wishing to escape the conflict. In early 1916, just a few weeks before the battle of Verdun, the Cabaret Voltaire opens, just a block and a half away from where V.I. Lenin is spending his exile. It is founded by Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings; entertainers who attract a small cadre of like-minded exiles. They embark on a campaign of ever more outrageous acts, which gain traction amongst the public. Soon, they chose a name for themselves, and the rest is history.

Dada and Cabaret Voltaire
The press release that accompanied the opening of the nightclub reads:
Cabaret Voltaire. Under this name a group of young artists and writers has been formed whose aim is to create a centre for artistic entertainment. The idea of the cabaret will be that guest artists will come and give musical performances and readings at the daily meetings. The young artists of Zurich, whatever their orientation, are invited to come along with suggestions and contributions of all kinds. -Zurich, February 2, 1916.
This is a clip from a movie about dada that I digitised from videotape.
I think that the original documentary film, from which this is an excerpt, is called 'Dada', directed by Greta Deses and originally produced in 1969. The link below should enable you to access a copy of the film from a source near you. I am fairly sure this is the film that I used.
In response to queries about the video. Since first posting the video I spent a considerable amount of time researching dada for a novel and am convinced that the video is, as always suspected, an excellent reconstruction. Ball's 'Flight out of time' makes no mention of any filming.

Readykea X-Mass Shop, Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich
Time to conceptual shopping in DADA Zurich. This year I was asked by Adrian Notz, the director of the Cabaret Voltaire, to set up a special Christmass Shop for this year shopping season. As always, time was short and budget was very limited. For this reason, we decided to re-use some of the elements I had use last year for the Revolution to Smash Global Capitalism exhibition: an entire installation build with some IKEA boxes and designed in a way that these can be taken back, in respect to IKEA customer service policy. In the end these boxed remained in my office so that I could make some more experiment. These helped me develop the ELIOOO project, a system designed to grow food in them, which is what I am currently working on now. So if you happen to be in Zurich and you are hunting for some conceptual gifts, the X-Mass DADA shop is your place. Shop DADA, support Cabaret Voltaire.
