Hi, my name is Phil from the german travel blog killerwal.com. Today I'm gonna take you to Zurich, which is the capital of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland but not of Switzerland itself, which has no capital city at all.
The city of Zurich has approximately 400,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Switzerland and has a population density of approximately 4300 inhabitants per square kilometer. Zurich is the most important economic, scientific and social center of Switzerland. The city lies in the eastern Swiss Plateau, on the Lake Zurich. Its inhabitants are called Zürcher.
For years, Zurich is one of the cities with the highest quality of life and listed the highest cost of living simultaneously. Since 2012, Zurich is regarded as the most expensive city in the world, followed by Tokyo and Geneva.
With its main railway station, the largest station in Switzerland , and the airport, the city of Zurich is a continental transportation hub and thanks to the local big banks (including UBS and Credit Suisse ) and insurances (Zurich Insurance Group and Swiss Re) an international financial center and the largest financial center Switzerland, followed by Geneva and Lugano. Despite the relatively small population Zurich is therefore considered one of the world's cities. Above average number of media companies , including Swiss radio and television, have their headquarters here Thanks to its location on Lake Zurich and its well-preserved medieval center and a wide range of cultural attractions and nightlife, it is also a center of Swiss Tourism.

14 Most Scenic Small Towns in Switzerland
10 Most Beautiful Castles in Switzerland
Switzerland is a small country that sits smack dab in the middle of the Alps, making for 360-degree scenery wherever a person finds themselves. Numerous lakes also add to the picture postcard look of this country, whose most famous citizen may have been the fictional Heidi. From banks to bucolic alpine meadows, Switzerland has it all. An overview of the best places to visit in Switzerland:
18 Secrets & Best Places in Bern, Switzerland
These are my 18 hidden secrets, things to do & best places to visit for Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Bern is not the first place you think of when planning a trip to Europe but let me tell you, Bern is one of the most beautiful places I've been to.
My Bern Travel guide with tips, secrets, maps, addresses and photos:
Kick off Bern with a refreshing jump in the Aare river which flows at speeds up to 13 km per hour while you hold onto your airbag containing your clothes.
For lunch I recommend grabbing a bite at a patio on the Barenplatz downtown Bern loaded with adorable little restaurants and bars.
Kramgasse is the main shopping street with a gorgeous view on the Zytglogge clocktower, the photos simply don't do this place justice.
Bern is well known for being the residence of Professor Einstein, you can visit his original apartment on the Kramgasse. This is also the same place where Einstein came up with the formula E=MC2.
For a fun evening grab a couple of beers at Antonio's Bar & Cafe next to the Zytglogge. I ended up playing a fun game called Corridor with some of the locals and met a couple of friendly girls from Zurich.
In conclusion, Bern is a great summer destination for a pit-stop during a road trip through the Swiss Alps. Due to its small size, 2 days is sufficient to see the entire city. Happy travels!

Zurich tours
Boat tours
Cruises are offered on Lake Zurich by Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft departing from Bürkliplatz from April to October. It's a great way of taking in the scale of the lake. Costs vary depending on the length of the cruise and whether or not food and drink is included. Reservations are only necessary for those planning to dine onboard.
Bus tours
Zurich Tourism is the best source for a variety of bus tours of the city. Tours last up to two-and-a-half hours and many involve a detour into the countryside, giving a chance to take in the picturesque wider surrounds of the canton. Some also include a cablecar or boat trip. Bus tours depart either from in front of the tourist information office or from Zurich-Sihlquai station.
Trolley tours
Two-hour classic trolley tours in old decorated vehicles, which include headphone commentary in eight languages, operate all year round. Tours take in both old and new parts of the city, but the trolleys, being the first of their kind in Switzerland, are as much a part of the appeal as the sights themselves. The tour departs from Zurich-Sihlquai station. You can preboook via the tourist office and several travel agencies, including Meier Tours.
Walking tours
There are a number of marked trails in the hills surrounding the city that are ideal for strolling or jogging. The promenade along the lakeside is popular with locals and tourists alike. Zurich Tourism organises two-hour tours of the Old Town. Tours usually depart from in front of the tourist information office at the central train station.
Excursions from Zurich
Jungfraujoch
From this breathtaking mountainous location in the Bernese Oberland (often referred to as 'the top of Europe') you can see Switzerland's largest glacier and the spectacular Alpine scenery of this region. The cogwheel mountain train from Lauterbrunnen climbs to the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m (11,331ft), on the Jungfraujoch. Full-day bus excursions can be booked through the Tourist Information Office - the last part of the journey is by train. The tour runs from the end of April to the end of October. Alternatively, the train journey from Zurich to Jungfraujoch station, with changes at Bern, Interlaken Ost, Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg, takes between four-and-a-half and five-and-a-half hours with the Alps gleaming just outside the window.
Rapperswil
The beautiful little 'City of Roses' has a medieval character dating back to 1229, with its ancient castle, rose gardens, romantic lanes and restaurants on the lakeside. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Zurich, some 29km (18 miles) from Zurich. Zürichsee-Schifffahrtsgesellschaft offers round trips to this little town (tours take about 2 hours). Further attractions include the Knies Children's Zoo and a Circus Museum. Rapperswil is also accessible from Zurich by S-Bahn S5 or S7 (journey time - 50 minutes).
Winterthur
The canton's second largest city is 25km (15.5 miles) northeast of Zurich and can be reached in just 20 minutes by train from the Hauptbahnhof. Among its highlights, The Sammlung Oskar Reinhart am Römerholz houses important works from European Old Masters and French Impressionists. The Fotomuseum Winterthur is Europe's largest photographic arts centre, with regularly changing exhibitions. One of the country's foremost interactive science museums, Technorama der Schweiz, is also located in Winterthur. In the Winterthur Kunstmuseum, visitors can view major 19th- and 20th-century art. Tempo-drom und Block, Europe's largest indoor sports park, which includes a rollerpark and beach volleyball court, is a five-minute walk from the main train station.

Did you guys know that Switzerland is declared to be the happiest place in the world, according to The World Happiness Report issued by Sustainable Development Solutions Network for United Nations? And to top it all Zurich is the city with the best quality of life in the world.
It’s the largest city in Switzerland but on a world scale it’s rather small. With only about 400,000 inhabitants, Zurich is not even the capital. The capital is Bern. The Swiss have deliberately avoided naming a capital city in order to keep the power of each canton (federal state) in balance. This is because the cantons were originally sovereign states and they were united as equals when Switzerland was constituted and they still have a strong degree of independence. The cantons are governed at the federal level, but also have their own constitutions, parliament, government, and courts.
Another interesting thing about Zurich is that only two thirds of its residents are actually Swiss citizens. Germans and Italians make up the next largest population groups, which is part of the reason why the city, as almost all Switzerland speaks four languages: German, Italian, English, and French

Zurich is situated at 408 m (1,339 ft) above sea level on the lower (northern) end ofLake Zurich about 30 kilometers (19 mi) north of the Alps, nestling between the wooded hills on the west and east side. The Old Town stretches on both sides of theLimmat, which flows from the lake, running northwards at first and then gradually turning into a curve to the west. The geographic (and historic) centre of the city is theLindenhof, a small natural hill on the west bank of the Limmat, about 700 m (2,300 ft) north of where the river issues from Lake Zurich. Today the incorporated city stretches somewhat beyond the natural confines of the hills and includes some districts to the northeast in the Glatt Valley and to the north in theLimmat Valley . The boundaries of the older city are easy to recognize by the Schanzengraben canal. This artificial watercourse has been used for the construction of the third fortress in the 17th and 18th centuries. Places in Zurich are very that's why it is famous for visiting.
Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of the canton of Zurich. It is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich. The municipality has approximately 400,028 inhabitants, the urban agglomeration 1.315 million and the Zurich metropolitan area 1.83 million. Zurich is a hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Zurich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.
Permanently settled for around 2000 years, Zurich has a history that goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. However, early settlements have been found dating back more than 6400 years ago. During the Middle Ages Zurich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli.
The official language of Zurich is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.
Zurich is a leading global city and among the world's largest financial centers despite a relatively low population. The city is home to a large number of financial institutions and banking giants. Most of Switzerland's research and development centers are concentrated in Zurich and the low tax rates attract overseas companies to set up their headquarters there.
