We’re taking you to the National Wildlife Refuge of Cabo Rojo.
Our first stop is at Puerto Rico’s pink lakes - Las Salinas (Salt flats) de Puerto Rico. From there, we’ll explore El Faro Los Morrillos (The Los Morrillos Lighthouse), a historic landmark in the area of Rojo Cabo.
Not too far from there, we’ll visit the Puente de Piedra and we’ll relax at Playa Sucia or La Playuela, one of the most beautiful beaches on the west side (or oeste) of Puerto Rico.
This corner of the island quickly became one of our favorite day-trips while we lived in Boqueron. If you're in Puerto Rico, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is located on the southwestern side of Puerto Rico in the municipio of Cabo Rojo. It was established in 1974, when lands were obtained from the Central Intelligence Agency. There has always been strange rumors of flying saucers and top secret government programs operating here.

[Wikipedia] Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge
Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is located on the southwestern side of Puerto Rico in the municipio of Cabo Rojo. It was established in 1974, when 587 acres of land were obtained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the Central Intelligence Agency which had operated the Caribbean Bureau of the Foreign Broadcast Information Service there for a number of years. The 1,836 acres (7.43 km2) refuge is a habitat for number of native bird species including the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird also known as la mariquita de Puerto Rico or capitán. Many birds find their way to the refuge while migrating between North and South America.
In 1999, the National Wildlife system purchased and added to the refuge the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, an historic salt mining enterprise located near the Los Morrillos Lighthouse. Caborrojeños Pro Salud y Ambiente, a local civic group, runs a visitor's center in the salt flats. More than 118 bird species have been recorded near the area.
The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is administered as part of the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife complex.

Cabo Rojo Tours Video (Red Cape) is the name of both a small administrative town (10 miles south of Mayagüez and 8 miles west of San Germán) and the wider municipality that surrounds it. To add to the confusion, it is also the name used to describe the rugged coastline that constitutes Puerto Ricos extreme and rarely traveled southwestern tip. Got it?
Characterized by rust-red limestone cliffs that fall precipitously away into the ocean, the region is dominated by the Faro de Cabo Rojo (Red Cape Lighthouse), which sits atop a wild and windswept promontory surrounded by coastal mangroves, dry cacti and crystalline salt pans.
Busy Hwy 2 cuts inland between Mayagüez and Yauco, leaving this rather isolated corner of the island refreshingly untrammeled. Theres an extensive patchwork of wildlife refuges here along with a quiet network of country roads that make for excellent cycling. Closer to the lighthouse youll find trails, extensive salt pans and the bejeweled Playuela Beach. In-the-know locals will tell you in surreptitious whispers that this is one of the islands best stretches of sand.
