The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer found in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. These tame and friendly animals are a joy to all who come and see them. Reindeer are not just for Christmas!
There are currently around 150 reindeer in the herd, mostly ranging on the Cairngorm Mountains with the remainder on the Glenlivet Estate, the locations being some 30 miles apart.
The Shop and Paddocks are open daily (except Jan-early Feb, shop only in March) and there is a daily guided Hill Trip to see the reindeer plus additional trips during the Summer months. During the Winter, the trip may be dependent on whether we can find the herd. We said they’re free-ranging and we mean it!

Aviemore is a town in the Cairngorms National Park, in the Scottish Highlands. It’s known for its close proximity to the secluded lochs, ancient forest, mountain trails and ski runs of the surrounding parkland. Near town, the funicular at the CairnGorm Mountain resort has panoramic views of the Cairngorms mountain range. Southwest, Highland Wildlife Park’s inhabitants include Scottish wildcats and capercaillie birds.
Aviemore is a town and tourist resort, situated within the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Badenoch and Strathspey committee area, within the Highland council area. The town is popular for skiing and other winter sports, and for hill-walking in the Cairngorm Mountains. There are excellent views of the Cairngorms from various places within the town, especially from the railway station. The Aviemore stone circle is located within a residential neighbourhood of the town.
Aviemore lies on the B9152 (the old A9 road since the main road from Inverness to Perth was rebuilt further west in 1980). Aviemore railway station is on the Highland Main Line and Aviemore is also the southern terminus of the Strathspey Railway, a heritage railway.
The Cairngorm Mountain Railway, which opened in 2001, is the highest railway in the United Kingdom. The two-kilometre long funicular ascends the northern slopes of Cairn Gorm, the United Kingdom's sixth-highest mountain, serving the Cairngorm Mountain ski resort. The route and ski area are located within the Cairngorms National Park, the largest National Nature Reserve in Britain, located near Aviemore in the Highland council area of Scotland.

First winter snowfall in Nov 2019 around Glenshee Ski centre and Braemar in Aberdeenshire, Scotland
The first snowfall of the 2019 winter season over the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, especially around Glenshee Ski centre and Braemar. Enough snow for some snowball fights if not skiing at the moment, but it is starting to cover the Cairngorms now.
The film shows Glenshee Ski area at the border of Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, then around Glen Clunie and into Braemar. Buildings include the Fife Arms Hotel, war memorial, Mews and Braemar Gathering and Highland Games centre. The music is a track called 'Farewell to the King (Lament to Macbeth)' composed and performed by talented local musician Paul Anderson from Tarland.

The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd is Britain's only herd of reindeer, found free ranging in the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland. These tame and friendly animals are a joy to all who come and see them. Reindeer are not just for Christmas.
There are currently around 150 reindeer, approximately 50 of them ranging the Cairngorm Mountains and the remainder on the Glenlivet Estate; the locations being some 30 miles apart
There is a daily visit to the reindeer, weather permitting, departing from Reindeer House at 11.00 am. There is an additional visit at 2.30 pm during the Summer months. During the Winter months, the visit may be dependent on whether we can find them. We said they're free-ranging and we mean it!
Under the supervision of our trained guides, our visitors can feed and stroke the reindeer.
Reindeer are very beautiful and gentle. They have similar traits to humans and there are words in the Sami language for them such as lazy, happy and grumpy. They are independent and don't cry; they are tough and get on with life. They like to run against the wind. They belong in the wild and should be protected
Reindeer House is located approximately six miles from Scotland's Premier All -Year resort of Aviemore.
Aviemore has its own railway station located right in the heart of the town and there are several trains per day including an overnight sleeper service to London. Details of Train Services can be obtained from National Railway Enquiries or First Scotrail.
Inverness, which is situated 30 miles to the north of Aviemore, has its own airport and there are a flights to and from a number of airports in the UK including London Gatwick, London Luton and Glasgow.
There is a daily service from London Luton Airport with Easyjet Airlines with standard single fares from as little as £29 plus taxes. If you book your flight using Easyjet's Web Site booking facility, you can save a little more than if you book by telephone. This is a no frills service but we have tried it and it is more than adequate for anyone. At such low prices, why not treat yourselves to a short break on fly-drive. There are plenty of car-rental companies at Inverness Airport. Hertz seem to have particularly good rates.
Other Flights are operated to Inverness by British Airways and other carriers.
On arrival in Aviemore, you should have no problems in finding the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. A daytime only bus service operates from Aviemore (departs from Railway Station Car Park) to Glenmore. Aviemore is also well served by an efficient taxi service with a trip to the Reindeer Centre costing in the region of £7 to £8.
Many folks hitch a lift (people are very helpful around here, but please be careful and sensible) and, finally, it is a very pleasant walk along the ski road through Glenmore Forest Park past the beautiful Loch Morlich with its fabulous sandy beach for those whose legs do not tire easily. Look out for the memorial stone to the wedding of HRH Prince Charles and Princess Diana on the left (just back from the road) as you walk or drive past the side of Loch Morlich.
The Glenmore Forest Park Caravan and Camping site and the Glenmore Youth Hostel are both within 400 metres of the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre. For details of accommodation in the area, we suggest you contact the Aviemore Tourist Office. Or if you want more information about holidaying in Scotland try Exploring Scotland
