Lake Calima Colombia, also known as Calima reservoir, is located in the municipal of Calima El Darien. As one of the largest reservoirs in the Americas, it is one of the most important areas in the department of Valle del Cauca.
The lake lies between the Andes and the Pacific Coast and thus an ideal place for water sports that are powered by the constant winds throughout the year. It is certainly a wind paradise! Here, you can do kayak, kitesurf Colombia, windsurf Colombia, camp, and discover a plethora of other activities as you enjoy the breathtaking views that also make it a great place for Colombia birding. The Colombia lake’s location also makes it a great starting point for day visits to other places like the Pacific Coast, San Cipriano, and Cali.

Quick 360 Lake Calima dam Colombia, Valle de Cauca
Quick 360 view on the span of the dam at lake Calima in Colombia, Valle de Cauca. It's a man-made lake where they dammed and flooded a valley for use in the generation of electricity. The mist you see is actually clouds coming into the valley. I'm told the elevation is approximately 4,500 feet.

Today we have Bahía Málaga … you can contact Julio Perez from Bicivan an enjoy this beautiful and amazing destination.
:::: THINGS TO DO IN CALI ::::
You can enjoy the trip to Bahía Málaga when you are visiting Cali because is only 2 and a half hours in bus, honestly it is a natural paradise …. Julio Perez (Bicivan) has an amazing touristic plan already organize for you … you can go for 2 til 4 days, Julio pics you up in Cali and leaves you again in the same spot he picked you. The plan is very organized, the food is delicious and he knows the area very well, one of the top things to take this plan with Julio is that he includes the kayaking adventure :)
_______________________________________
If you want to do it alone, yo can do it ….. please keep this in mind:
* FIRST you must go to the bus terminal in Cali and take a bus to Buenaventura, approximately it must cost you $ 25,000 each way. (Estimated time if there are no landslides on the road 2 hours and 30 minutes, the landscape is beautiful and the weather is very humid).
* SECOND You arrive to Buenaventura and get off at the bus terminal, ask where the dock is (in spanish Muelle) ... it is about 4 or 5 blocks from the terminal, you can go walking.
* THREE ask for the boat company, BahiaMar ... for us it is the best service, the boats are brand new and you feel safe (Look for the yellow ones) …... the others companies are not so bad, but BahiaMar is far better. The round-trip ticket should cost you maximum $ 60,000 per person. You should say that you are going to Juanchaco, or else you can get confused in the way …. Juanchaco is the last stop, so don’t worry …. You can´t miss it because you arrive to a dock as well (it has some stairs).
* FOURTH The trip by boat lasts 50 minutes approximately and remember that you will arrive at the Juanchaco´s dock, it is a village with low resources but incredible people, when you are in land again you got several options: you can stay near Juanchaco (it is not recommended, there are better places) ... or you can go walking, on a motorcycle or on a tractor to Ladrilleros, it will take you 10 minutes maximum (walking about 25 minutes) ... in Ladrilleros there are several beaches where you can swim or if you want to go further ... You can stay in La Barra, the beach is beautiful (here you can build your tent and sleep close to the sea). If you are planning to stay in a hotel or something like that, we recommend to look for it in Ladrilleros :).
NOTE: Be careful with the tides, ask very well what time it goes down and at what time the tide rises, you can get trapped if you are walking in the beach and it can be dangerous. Also take a good insect or bug repellent in some hours of the day, mosquitoes can be very annoying.
Another thing, take bottled water with you …. You don´t want to get sick in the trip.

Comments from Julio Pérez talking about his Bahía Málaga tour:
- The kayak navigation in the bays is perfect for novices since it has a calm sea because it is sheltered from the wind.
- The Kayak allows us to move to 5 km x hour with very little effort and most importantly, it allows us to enter where the boat can not.
- Perfect tourist plan to watch birds and whales because you can go very silently.
NOTE: Please be patient because Julio doesn´t speak a lot of english …. It´s an opportunity to practice your spanish because Julio loves to talk about all his adventures in the area.

We explored the department Valle del Cauca on the pacific coast and checked it out on its potential for bird watching. El Valle del Cauca is another of the 32 Colombian departments, located in the southwest part of the country between the Andes and the Pacific Coast. The area is surrounded by Choco y Risaralda in the North, Qundio y Toima to the east and Choco y the Pacific Ocean to the west. Because of its location near the Pacific Coast, the area houses between 25 and 50% of the country’s fauna and 11% of the country’s flora.
The Valle del Cauca is the second most biodiverse department in Colombia. With over 725 species of marine birds and 100 migratory species, this is an ideal place for Colombia birdwatching. Get your cameras ready for some great Colombia birding photography as well and be sure to check out the rich diversity of amphibians, as the region houses over 130 different species.
The reign’s natural richness is certainly impressive, but it is also an important area of environmental conservation and protection. From the impenetrable jungles and the fast-flowing rivers to the infinite beaches and the most extensive mangroves in South America, the region is certainly one of the best things to do in Colombia for our nature lovers!

(Unfortunately we lost the audio of this video. We apologize for the poor sound quality)
While exploring the department of Valle del Cauca, we arrived at San Cipriano, a tiny Pacific jungle village about 3 hours from Cali by bus. Here, we got the chance to ride in brujitas, which are a testament to the ingenuity of the Afro-Colombian inhabitants of the Colombia Pacific Coast. San Cipriano is a nature reserve situated in the heart of the Jungle along the Colombia Pacific Coast, about two hours from Cali in the department of Valle del Cauca. Legend has it that one only arrives in San Cipriano if they are looking for pleasure and spiritual rest, and we certainly were in the mood for this!
In order to arrive in San Cipriano, you must arrive by brujitas, which are a testament to the ingenuity of the region’s Afro-Colombian inhabitants. When the only form of transportation connecting the town to the rest of the department stopped functioning, the habitants constructed a motorcycle system that runs along wooden platform, resembling that of a railroad. The landscapes in San Cipriano are truly breathtaking and a green that you have never seen. Here, the waters are crystal clear and absolutely transparent When you first arrive, we suggest hitting the trials and enjoying the lovely Pacific Jungle Colombia. The natural beauty of the region is incredible, but what is really impressive is the biodiversity that has made this region one of the top 17 priority spots for global conservation efforts.

Cali Travel Guide - Colombia Unforgettable Adventure
Cali Travel Guide - Colombia Unforgettable Adventure
Cali is a city in southwestern Colombia, capital of the Valle del Cauca department. It has about 2 million inhabitants and is a significant industrial and commercial center of activity in Colombia. Being at around 1,000 meters above sea level it tends to have a warm midday and afternoon with nice Pacific Ocean breezes while nights are cool. Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the late hours of the morning.
Cali is located on the Cauca Valley to the west of the Cauca River and to the east of the Western Mountain Range near the hills known as Farallones de Cali. The city rests approximately 1,000 metres (3,281 feet) above sea level. Approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Cali and over the Western Cordillera, lies the port city of Buenaventura on the Colombian Pacific coast. To the northeast are the manufacturing center of Yumbo and Cali's international airport, the Alfonso Bonilla Aragón (CLO).
Santiago de Cali is located in a valley. The city is completely bordered by mountains to the West; the Farallones de Cali mountains are the closest to the city. The Eastern part of the city is bordered by the Cauca River. To the north and south are extended plains. In the first one you can find the industrial city of Yumbo which is part of Cali's metropolitan area, to the south you can find Jamundí, also part of the metropolitan area. The city is mainly flat, but there are areas mostly to the west that are mountainous, like San Antonio and La loma de la Cruz, which are both tourist sites. There are several rivers that descend from the Western Mountain Range and empty into the Cauca River, passing through the metropolitan area of Cali. In the western part of the city the Aguacatal River flows into the Cali River, which continues on to the Cauca River.
Santiago de Cali offers historical areas with cultural variety and other attractions. In downtown Cali there are many historic churches such as La Merced and La Ermita. Cali contains a well-preserved historical center. The most important zone is La plaza de Cayzedo, considered the center of the city, which is a square surrounded by many historical and modern buildings like El edificio Otero, La Catedral and El Palacio de Justicia. This plaza is close to other tourist places, like The Saint Francis church (in Spanish, Iglesia de San Francisco), the municipal theater and La Merced church. The city is also rich in monuments, parks, squares and museums. The most emblematic sculptures are Cristo Rey, located upon a mountain range; Sebastian de Belalcazar, founder of the city; and Las tres Cruces, a place of pilgrimage during the days of the Holy Week.
The city of Cali offers a variety of ways to move through the city; in March 2009, The Masivo Integrado de Occidente (MIO) began operations. It is planned to be the primary system that connects the city. Taxis and old buses are the secondary way to get around. Taxis are one of the best systems that tourists can use, as they are relatively inexpensive and are more secure. Non-MIO buses round out the system and are used primarily by the working class to get around and are less expensive to use. Buses are secure but not at the same level as taxis. This part of the transport in the city is awaiting a needed reorganization of routes.

Welcome to Colombia
We drove to the department Valle del Cauca on the Colombian Pacific Coast in to meet up with Juan David Camacho Marquez. This young boy showed us the best spots for Colombia bird watching. The region is one of the most biodiverse and therefore you will also encounter a variety of other mammals. In general, it is worth checking out the biodiversity Colombia.
The Sonso Lagoon, also known as the Chircal Laguna, is the largest and most important wetland in the Valle del Cauca. Located between the Andes and Pacific Coast, the Sonso Lagoon is a nature reserve extending more than 2,045 hectares. The reserve lies just 80 minutes outside of Santiago de Cali, which is the department’s capital.
We found the climate to be quite varied due to the diverse species and topography lands. Here, you can find approximately 165 bird species, many of which are migrants form North America and other regions. Thus, it is a great region for Colombia birdwatching and adding some unique species to your bird identification list!
In addition to Colombia birding, the region offers kayaking, environmental conservation education, and various means to relax with nature.
