Camagüey Cuba 2019 - Biking in the city center
Don't believe commercials. This is what a Cuba city looks like. A 10+ minutes video of me riding my bike in Camagüey Cuba 2019 and recording Cuba 2019.
CAMAGUEY - Cuba's Third Largest City ...and it's a good one.
As I travel across Cuba in an easterly direction i find that the cities get nicer and nicer. Camaguey certainly fell into that category as I was so impressed by what I found in this unheralded city.
After almost continuous attacks from pirates the original city (founded as Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe around 1515 on the northern coast) was moved inland in 1528.
The city was built with a confusing lay-out of winding alleys. There are many blind alleys and forked streets that lead to squares of different sizes. One explanation is that this was done by design, to make the city easier to defend from any raiders; by the same version, the reason that there is only one exit from the city was that should pirates ever return and succeed in entering the city, it would be possible for local inhabitants to entrap and kill them. However, locals dispute this reasoning as a myth, asserting that in truth the city developed without planning, and that winding streets developed out of everybody wanting to stay close to their local church (the city has 15 of them). - wiki

Top things to do in Camaguey, Cuba
Heading to Camaguey? It’s one of my favorite stops in Cuba. The city’s labyrinth of charming streets may not be the easiest to navigate but whichever direction you turn you’ll be treated to something special. Beautiful squares, art galleries, antique car shows, and creativity around every corner.
Art lovers should spend the day cruising around to the many galleries in town. Be sure to stop by and see Pepe Gutierrez, a leather sculpture who spent 30 years perfecting his craft.
Next visit Martha Jimenez, one of the most important contemporary Cuban artists who has more than 250 exhibitions worldwide. Then there’s the playful and somewhat provocative creations of Magdiel.
Tinajones are the local symbol of Camaguey, they were used to hold rain water before the aqueducts were built. The Casanova family is famous tinajone makers.
Take a drive to the countryside and visit King Ranch. At one time King Ranch was the largest ranch in the United States. One of their first international ventures was here in Cuba where their culture is still alive and well.
A short horse ride away will lead you to El Cafetal, you can visit the local school in this small village and enjoy some time with the locals.
Back in the city of Camaguey; visit the award winning Arlequin dance group. It’s an after school program where the kids have become pros in son, mambo and salsa to name a few.
The Camagüey Valet is one of the 2 most prestigious companies in Cuba and they practice here on the grounds of an 80 year old estate in the center of town. A peak inside the workshop shows hand sown costumes and point shoes made right on the property.
For dinner, head to one of the most beautiful squares in the city.
For a romantic night, have dinner at paladar Restaurante 1800.
Just outside the restaurant the club “Autos Clasicos” or Classic Cars meets to show off their original classic cars on Plaza San Juan de Dios. You can also catch a ride home if you’d like and I would definitely recommend it.

The symbol of the city of Camagüey is the clay pot or tinajón, used to capture rain water to be used later, keeping it fresh. Clay pots are everywhere, some as small as a hand, some large enough for two people to stand up in, either as monuments or for real use. Local legend has it that if you drink water from a girl's personal tinajón, you will fall in love with the girl and never leave her.
The main secondary education institutions are the University of Camagüey and the Instituto Pedagógico de Camagüey.
One of the first seven villages founded by the Spaniards in Cuba, Camagüey played a prominent role as the urban centre of an inland territory dedicated to cattle breeding and the sugar industry. Settled in its current location in 1528, the town developed on the basis of an irregular urban pattern that contains a system of large and minor squares, serpentine streets, alleys and irregular urban blocks, highly exceptional for Latin American colonial towns located in plain territories.
