Top things to do in Camaguey, Cuba
Heading to Camaguey? It’s one of my favorite stops in Cuba. The city’s labyrinth of charming streets may not be the easiest to navigate but whichever direction you turn you’ll be treated to something special. Beautiful squares, art galleries, antique car shows, and creativity around every corner.
Art lovers should spend the day cruising around to the many galleries in town. Be sure to stop by and see Pepe Gutierrez, a leather sculpture who spent 30 years perfecting his craft.
Next visit Martha Jimenez, one of the most important contemporary Cuban artists who has more than 250 exhibitions worldwide. Then there’s the playful and somewhat provocative creations of Magdiel.
Tinajones are the local symbol of Camaguey, they were used to hold rain water before the aqueducts were built. The Casanova family is famous tinajone makers.
Take a drive to the countryside and visit King Ranch. At one time King Ranch was the largest ranch in the United States. One of their first international ventures was here in Cuba where their culture is still alive and well.
A short horse ride away will lead you to El Cafetal, you can visit the local school in this small village and enjoy some time with the locals.
Back in the city of Camaguey; visit the award winning Arlequin dance group. It’s an after school program where the kids have become pros in son, mambo and salsa to name a few.
The Camagüey Valet is one of the 2 most prestigious companies in Cuba and they practice here on the grounds of an 80 year old estate in the center of town. A peak inside the workshop shows hand sown costumes and point shoes made right on the property.
For dinner, head to one of the most beautiful squares in the city.
For a romantic night, have dinner at paladar Restaurante 1800.
Just outside the restaurant the club “Autos Clasicos” or Classic Cars meets to show off their original classic cars on Plaza San Juan de Dios. You can also catch a ride home if you’d like and I would definitely recommend it.

This is a personal review of the Brisas Santa Lucia Resort in Camaguey, Cuba.
Dining at the Hotel's Buffet, while on vacation with my family was pleasant and fun with lots of laughs, excellent & friendly service with a smile. We enjoyed the variety of meals, juices, red and white wine, as well as entertainment right at the table with music and singers, even a serenade, which was by the way amazing. Musicians offer to play your favorite song. Bolero and Salsa are my first choices, although I love all kinds of music. This particular bolero was a mesmerizing experience.

Rooms were clean, with Room Service daily, air conditioning was good ( winter time in Cuba so I don't know how it is in the summer when the temperatures go over 30 degrees Celsius).
Hotel/Resort staff was very friendly and helpful, except for my injury part which took forever to get help and very basic. Bring your own pain medication and make sure you have your prescriptions with you. Friendly words of wisdom - Avoid injuries at all cost.
Swimming in the ocean was nice but we got jellyfish stings and had to address that with beer and vinegar, the only available and surprisingly fast working, effective remedies.
The pool area is nice, well kept, like the Resort's grounds, that are visually pleasing. I used the pool later, with swim-up bar and pool activities.
Recorded this footage with Sony Handycam HDR CX240 camcoder. This video camera is quite good for home movies. Not really suitable for professional video recording nor night time recording. It also loses the pixels on the zooming in, so you don't get a quality there, because it is grainy. Audio is quite good in this very light video recorder.
The vacation at Brisas Resort was fun until I slipped on the puddle of water from the leaky air conditioning on the first day of my vacation. Spent the rest in a wheelchair, crutches and in painful agony. Lucky I brought my own pain medication. Bringing your own First Aid Kit to Cuba is a Must. The strongest pain suppressant there is aspirin so anything you bring yourself will be stronger than that. The Air Transat Holiday Representative was kind and had arranged for wheelchair assistance on my way home, as I could not walk.
The food and drink were good as it was the only thing I could enjoy for the rest of my vacation. 24 hrs bar had a variety of local and international drinks. The daytime coffee shop had some daily activities and a Yummy Spanish coffee.
I have managed to go for on a lobster dinner trip which proved to be luscious, tasty & absolutely delicious biggest lobster I have ever had. Regretfully I had to cancel other trips I have already paid for and unable to attend because of my injury.
Lobster dinner is a must while in Cuba, either go on an excursion or to a local restaurant, It's true bliss.

Camagüey y Santa Lucía
Be amazed by the incredible array of options for tourism in Camaguey City.
Beaches, culture, nature, places of tourist interest, excursions inside and outside the city will make your visit to this Cuban province an experience to share and repeat over and over again.
Santa Lucia Beach, located some 110 km from the capital city, is the main tourist destination in the province. Blessed by nature, it comprises 22 kilometers from Punta de Ganado to Los Cocos Beach; being the latter much appreciated because of its wide sand strip and privacy. Embraced by the Atlantic Ocean, the typical color of its waters and its proximity to one of the largest coral formations worldwide makes it different from other beaches of Cuba.
For those preferring to stay on the beach near the shore, the Beach Clubs offer all kinds of recreational options already included in the tour package: pedal boats, catamaran sailing, kayaking, sailing boats, surfboards and snorkeling equipment.
Beach Events
Santa Lucia Festival.
================
A great party in which Cuban cultural traditions are fully displayed through a number of sailing, gastronomic and sport activities; ideal to foster friendship between participants and highlight the main tourist resources of Santa Lucia Beach.
Santa Lucia Nautic Festival.
======================
A competitive event held twice-a-year, in summer and winter, ideal for water sports lovers. Marine parade, contests, fashion, sand figure-modeling and a great closing party are some of the greatest features of this diverted festival.
Cuba 2019 - Day Five - Touring the Historical Streets of Camaguey - 3/20/2019
Our 5th & 6th days in Cuba were spent in the city of Camaguey, known for its narrow, meandering and sometimes confusing streets and passageways. The highlight of this day was a bici-taxi ride through the streets of the city where we were given a guided tour that included stops at several of the many popular squares or plazas. The hotel Santa Maria,where we stayed, was conveniently located adjacent to the historic district which was very convenient to many of the attractions. The following short video covers our 5th day of our Cuban trip in the city of Camaguey.
Cuba 2019 - Day Six - Camaguey - 3/21/2019
On the sixth day of our trip to Cuba we stayed in Camaguey at the Santa Maria hotel, a quaint and centrally located hotel to important landmarks of the city. In the morning we walked to a nearby plaza where we visited a colonial church, the proceeded to the Theatro Principal to watch a famous ballet troupe do their warm up exercises. The afternoon was spent at the King Ranch in the province (covered in another video). The evening found us at a local Paladar restaurant for another enjoyable meal.
