Parc naturel régional de Carmargue, or Regional Nature Park of the Camargue, is a protected area which was designated in 1970 along the shoreline of the Camargue, France. The park protects a wetland environment and an adjacent marine area.
The boundaries of the park have been expanded to include a lagoon called the Étang de Vaccarès. The Camargue is also the site of a national nature reserve, and has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and a biosphere reserve.
The park is twinned with a Spanish wetland, the Doñana National Park at the mouth of the Guadalquivir. The two parks share a number of characteristics including significance for bird-life and semi-feral horses, and proximity to a pilgrimage site (Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and the Hermitage of El Rocío). The site was formally twinned with the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Ramsar site by an agreement between the governments of Romania and France, 1992. Ramsar site no. 521.

The Camargue is a large, flat wetland situated in the Rhône delta. Its landscapes are fashioned by human hands. From the biological viewpoint, this is one of the most diverse regions in western Europe, with an exceptional fauna. It is a stopping-off point for birds migrating from northern Europe to Africa, and is France's only nesting site for flamingos. More than half of its natural spaces are protected. The Camargue regional nature park is situated between the two major branches of the Rhône delta. The principal role of the Camargue regional nature park is to reconcile the development of human activities with the conservation of nature.

Wonderful place with thousands flamingos and other birds
Coming at Camargue National Park we visited the beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and Unesco listed sites in Arles (Amphithéâtre Arles and Théâtre Antique Arles).
However the top attraction there was our visit to Parc ornithologique du Pont de Gau. This attraction you will not find at the tourist office information. The Bird Park Pont de Gau is a wonderful walk among thousands flamingos and other birds marching in the water at just several meters from you. There are well designed routes (around 8 km) with a map and points of view. You may spend here all the day (the door out is open all the time). In the evening the flamingos start their evening flight and it is just like a magical place. There are 30 000 flamingos at Camargue coming there from different places. Be prepared too with a spray against mosquitoes - there are myriads of them in the evening hours, even you will not even notice them while watching the birds.

La Camargue est une vaste zone humide située dans le delta du Rhône. C'est une terre façonnée par l'homme. La Camargue est, du point de vue biologique, l'une des régions les plus riches d'Europe occidentale. Elle abrite une faune exceptionnelle. Située dans l'axe migratoire des oiseaux du nord de l'Europe vers l'Afrique, elle constitue, pour eux, une halte majeure. Elle abrite aussi l'unique lieu de nidification de flamants roses en France.
Le territoire du Parc naturel régional de Camargue s'étend entre les deux bras du Rhône. Plus de la moitié des espaces naturels bénéficie d'un statut de protection. The unique landscape of the region along the Rhone Delta in France known as the Camargue is relatively young. It is believed that it grew to its present size of approximately ninety five thousand hectares in around 8,000 B.C.A number of the region's inhabitants are as famous as the landscape of the South of France such as the famous white horses of the Camargue. Bulls are extremely popular with the local inhabitants. They are often the centre of attention during the region's mostly non-bloody bull fights known as 'Corridas'.Up to the end of September the farmland of the Camargue's rice farmers is flooded with water up to twenty centimetres deep but there are also colourful fields with an abundance of sunflowers. However, the cultivation of rice also has its drawbacks. Due to the increasing desalinisation of the land the fragile ecosystem is gradually being undermined. However, the people of the Camargue are well aware of this danger to their wildlife and are actively engaged in preserving their unique world of swamps.Thus the natural colours of the Camargue and its captivating, charismatic inhabitants will continue to enchant visitors for many more years to come.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.
An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on
Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official
national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal
National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

Une fois le Rhône traversé, immergés dans une nature faite de marais, d’étangs et de lagunes, le monde moderne prend ses distances, vous êtes en Camargue.
Seules restent les grandes étendues naturelles où vivent librement chevaux, taureaux, flamands roses, hérons, canards, sangliers et tortues…
La Camargue invite, en effet, à de nombreuses découvertes faunistiques et floristiques, couplées à des activités de loisir : baignades, randonnées équestres, visites guidées et fêtes traditionnelles…
Ces paysages sont le fruit du travail des hommes qui maintiennent une activité agricole extensive. Riz de Camargue ou viande de taureau alimentent les menus des tables camarguaises qui font aussi la part belle aux produits de la mer et des étangs.
Vous ne le saviez pas mais la Camargue est une « île » ; une île d’exception, rattachée au continent par de graciles et rares langues de terre.

Marseille, die Hafenstadt an der französischen Mittelmeerküste, ist in Aufbruchstimmung. Die Millionenstadt mausert sich zu einer ansehnlichen Schönheit, seit sie 2013 Kulturhauptstadt Europas war. Jetzt überrascht sie mit frisch polierten Fassaden und nagelneuen Museen. Wenn das keinen Städtetrip wert ist. Von Marseille führt die Reise weiter Richtung Westen in die Camargue - eine faszinierende Sumpflandschaft, wo schneeweiße Pferde, rabenschwarze Stiere und rosa Flamingos in beinah grenzenloser Freiheit leben. In riesigen Feldern trocknet hier das berühmte Meersalz. Die zarteste Sorte ist Fleur de Sel, aber diese zerbrechliche Blume wird nur im Sommer geerntet. Endpunkt der Reise ist Arles, ein Touristenmagnet, nicht nur wegen des imposanten Amphitheaters mitten in der Stadt, sondern auch wegen Vincent van Gogh. Der niederländische Maler war gefangen vom starken Licht des Südens, malte wie ein Besessener, erlitt aber auch einen tragischen Zusammenbruch und verlor dabei ein Ohrläppchen. Ein trauriger Vorfall, und dennoch: Arles profitiert noch heute davon.

Once considered as hostile terrain, today this swampy area is becoming increasingly popular, which is not surprising with the large variety of impressive locations that this fascinating region has to offer and the region’s traditional white horses that are famous throughout the world.Bright fields of sunflowers are everywhere yet the Camargue is more well known for its cultivation of rice. In the high season of the summer months, of which the inhabitants of the small town of Saintes-Maries-De-La-Mer numbers around a thousand, the population increases ten fold. The fortified exterior of the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame-De-La-Mer that was built on the site of an early Christian chapel is a reminder of this region’s dramatic past. Legend has it that its beach was the starting point for the subsequent spread of Christianity in Provence. In addition to its significance as a place of pilgrimage, life in the village centres around the Camargue bulls and it even contains a bullring! Just as with Provence the beauty of the Camargue has attracted numerous famous painters and artists who were inspired by the wild tranquillity of this area and the landscape itself is like a painting when suddenly a collection of water lilies can bring to mind a famous impressionistic painting by Monet. The region’s outstandingly beautiful and harmonious combination of water, air and earth is unique in Europe. The French poet, Daudet, was absolutely right when he described the Camargue as the ‘most beautiful swamp in the world!’
