A visit to new Camasunary bothy on the Isle of Skye
Just a quick visit to new Camasunary bothy with Mr Globetrotter while out walking the Skye Trail on the Isle of Skye, 2016. The bothy was intentionally built by the MBA to replace the old bothy further up the shore. The old bothy is now locked and has been taken back by the owner. Apologies for the continuous 'sniffing', I was exhausted after walking all the way from Broadford and forgot to take a break before filming.
Bothy advice: If you are visiting a bothy folks, remember and take out your rubbish when you leave, there is no cleaner on duty!

Glen Sligachan, Camasunary and Kilmarie MTB Isle of Skye
Awesome ride from Torrin, near Elgol, via Kilmarie to Camasunary. Then along the full length of Glen Sligachan. Round the epic Bla Bheinn and between the Cuillin Hills, one of the best known mountain ridges in all of Great Britain. Fatbikes and Santa Cruz full sus Bronson. A bit wet day, but hey, thats the Scottish Highlands for you.

As Wish Lists go, a wild camp on top of one of Scotland’s finest viewpoints has always been near the top for me. Skye is one of my favourite locations and the viewpoint from Sgurr na Stri was meant to be one of the best places to observe the majesty of the Cuillin.
Previously I had climbed to near Sgurr Hain from Elgol, and also made it to Druim Hain from Sligachan in years gone by, but I had yet to reach the summit of Sgurr na Stri… Years passed and this adventure remained stuck to the top of the Bucket List ….. until now. The stars had lined up perfectly……
1- A green light from the wife to have two days in the mountains…
2- Fitness almost back at 100% post knee surgery….
3- The urge to wild camp (it had been months since the last outing)…
4- Maybe most importantly- a strong easterly breeze….
Another long work week and I was sure to get an early night on Friday to ready me for an early morning start on the Saturday – wrong! 02.00am and I finally got to sleep for the alarm to wake me 3.5hrs later- maybe it was the excitement and trepidation of what lay ahead!
The next obstacle was the conditions- heavy snow greeted me north of Perth and care was required, past Pitlochry and things started to look up and fall into place….
Glen Shiel greeted me with white peaks and blue skies and these conditions remained until Kilmarie… Skye was stunning – all the peaks, Red and Black, had white hats on and the skies were providing them with a suitable crystal blue backdrop… The only fly in the ointment was the wind speeds were forecast to be gusting up to 45mph at Munro level (although I wasn’t headed that high I was still concerned about the gusts on top of the exposed Sgurr na Stri!!).
I was walking by 11.30 and around mid-day I arrived at my first viewpoint – Am Mam! What a view! Sgurr na Stri had a White Cuillin backdrop which in turn had a dark cloud behind offering amazing contrast! The views were astounding and they only got better. I dropped down to Camasunary Bay (feels like a second home due to copies framed photos of this area at home!) and relaxed and spent time capturing still and film footage. The wind was slight down here and the sun was out, I could’ve stayed forever. However I had a mission to take this adventure off the Bucket List! The tide was out so I managed to cross the Abhainn Camas Fhiooairigh pretty easily. I then headed (slowly!) up the southern side of the corrie. I was feeling it now and the tiredness and big back pack were starting to take their toll! However the views that greeted me as I emerged at the Bealach soon had me forgetting about these woes!! Absolutely stunning – a white capped Black Cuillin Ridge was spread before me! My work wasn’t done yet and I still had a rocky climb to get to the summit, but I had a spring in my step and reached the summit by 15.30. All I can say is the views were bloody brilliant at 11.30 and they only got better and better. The film and photos don’t do it justice, you just have to go and experience it.
I now had to find a pitch for the tent and I think the one I found maybe the best pitch I have ever had. Views not only to the Cuillin, but to Eigg and Rum and across Loch Scavaig. The other way and Blaven ad Marsco filled the horizon… is this the best view point in Britain?????

Drive B8083 Road Isle Of Skye Inner Hebrides Scotland
Tour Scotland video of a drive on the B8083 single track road on the Strathaird Peninsula on ancestry visit to Isle Of Skye, Inner Hebrides. There are views of the Red Cuillin at first, with views to Blabheinn and the Black Cuillin before the road temporarily turns north west, curving around the head of Loch Slapin. It takes the long way around this sea loch to cross the bridge, Once across the bridge, the road turns southwards once more, doubling back down the west shore of the Loche over the Abhainn an t-Sratha Mhòir at the head of the loch. The B8083 then starts to climb, turning inland a little before dropping through Kikibost and Kilmarie. Here there is another parking area, from which a popular track leads over to Camasunary, on the shores of Loch Scavaig. The Strathaird peninsula was historically a heartland of the Mackinnons, a robustly Jacobite clan. On 4 July 1746, the Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender, found sanctuary at Elgol in the course of his wanderings under the protection of Clan Mackinnon of Mackinnon and Captain John Mackinnon of Elgol.

Best coast view wild camp Cuillin mountain view in the jack wolfskin gossamer tent
Filmed on the 31/05/2017 since then my video skills and equipment has improved alot :)
Skye Trail follows remote Glen Sligachan to the beautiful bay at Camasunary where there is an MBA bothy. From here a vertiginous cliff path with fantastic views across the water to the Cuillin reaches. Stage 5 does go all way to Elgol but i decided to wild camp at Glen Scaladal bay just before Elgol.
Pass Sligachan Hotel. cross the Dunvegan road and the old stone bridge, built by Thomas Telford and take the path up Glen Sligachan. You will pass Loch an Athain on the right and then the much large Loch na Creitheach. At Camasunary there is a bothy unforgettably there was a alcoholic there who thought he owned the place i was not going stay there anyway had enough of bothies now there retirement homes for alcoholics. After the bothy its on the coast path with truly magnificent views across the waters of Loch Scavaig to the Cuillin - often reckoned to be the finest coastal view in the British Isles. There is a short rocky section above a steep drop, and after a couple of kilometres the path passes above another steep cliff, at times perilously close to the edge. Take great care on this section as walkers have fallen here. Then is was a steep walk down to Glen Scaladal bay which is was i decided to wild camp just before Elgol

For Skye in particular there are two reasons why we see this healthy picture. The first is in the last few years there''s been an influx into Skye of people of working age and recent retirees who''ve moved there to enjoy the outdoors and for lifestyle as well as economic reasons and these people tend to be healthier than average. The other reason is there are parts of Skye which are wealthier than average and we do know that people who are better off are better able to take on these healthy behaviours, getting outside, hill walking, swimming and so on.

Living in an area that has beautiful scenery could add years to your life.
Health statistics from the Isle of Skye show that people there statistically live longer than anywhere else in Scotland and are amongst the healthiest people in the whole of the UK.
STORYLINE:
A fine day on one of the many crystal clear lochs near Broadford on the Isle of Skye.
This is Sally Parry and she''s swimming just metres away from her back garden.
She''s had two knee replacements, but her loch side home makes the trip to the water a short one.
Sally says: The water''s lovely!
And natural beauty is something that Skye has in abundance.
