Camelback Mountain Summit View - Phoenix, AZ 2013
During one of our AZ roadtrips, we visited and climbed Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, AZ, stopping for a hookah and wine break halfway up! We ascended 1,280ft to the summit via the 1.4 mile Cholla Trail, which took us a few hours roundtrip, and saw this gorgeous view of Phoenix from the top!

Climbing Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona 12-5-2015
When I had the idea of climbing Camelback Mountain, AZ, I did a search. No where was there a picture or video montage of the climb. You can look for yourself, anyone can do it. Be safe. Always have three points of contact on the difficult climbing parts. Bring two quarts of water per person. Bring a snack for energy. Take your time. When you get to the top, it is such a beautiful view of Arizona. You can accomplish this. I stopped to take photo's, and it took me about 1 hr. 30 min. I have climbed a mountain in the Tri-Country area of Southern Germany that took 2.5 days. Camelback Mount is fun to climb. By the way, YES, Santa Clause was at the top with a Christmas Tree giving out candy canes!!!! More videos on

Phoenix Sonoran Preserve Hike - Phoenix, Arizona
Open desert park with miles of hiking & biking trails through lush, green plains of cactus. This parks largely consists of small mountains and adjacent foothills that reach about 2,000 feet (roughly 600 meters) above the desert floor. They also interrupt the checkerboard pattern of Phoenix's built environment and are quite prominent, especially since most of the city is flat and gridded.
It is important to remember that the Phoenix mountain preserves are open, undeveloped desert areas. Please use care when heading out as hikers routinely encounter rocky terrain, rattlesnakes and other potential hazards native to the Sonoran Desert.
Originally, the park system began with Piestewa Mountain Park and North Mountain Park as county parks. However, most of the existing municipal park system was acquired in the early 1970s when Phoenix's ever-expanding development threatened to encroach on these mountainous areas. All feature extensive hiking trails and many have public access areas with parking, ramadas (picnic tables) and restrooms. Some offer nearby horse stables where horses can be rented and ridden into the park.

Camelback Mountain near Phoenix, Arizona - 30 January 2010
Trip date: January 30, 2010
Picture opportunity rating: 1
Besides the wide range of panorama options there is nothing else to take pictures of. If you get to the top and you are patient enough (assuming that there is not a lot of people) you will get a great chance to take the pictures of local chipmunks, just look at the pictures and video.
Hiking Difficulty: Easy - Moderate
The trail itself starts fight after the golf course ends. Mostly it is just walk up the hill, but as you get towards the end it gets more difficult. I would not take small kids all the way up there. You will get a great view of the city once you are on the top.
Paved road: Yes
Pass required for parking: No, but parking may be limited if you go during peak days.
Dog accessible: Yes

Pluses:
Everyone were so helpful and so friendly. Josh was the one that checked us in. He picked the right room 2306 by the pool and nice and quiet and easy to walk to all the pools. David checked us out , he was also so helpful. And the workers on the gift shop were so helpful too!!! Also are bed was so comfortable- the covers were so puffy and soft.
Keep up the the great job to everyone
Happy, helpful staff. Comfy, spacious room. Free parking! My 4 yr old enjoyed the pool and miniature golf.
Minuses:
Extra charges at the water park area. We only had 4 guest free pass per room. We had 5 guests. Had to pay $35 for additonal guest. Too expensive for water the water park had to offer.

A walk within the Mysteries of the COPENHAVER CASTLE - Phoenix Arizona - Camelback Mountain
Filmed with written permission from the property owner January 2017. Further information regarding this architectural wonder can be found by searching for Copenhaver Castle; constructed for Dr. Mort Copenhaver in 1967 on the south side of Camelback Mountain. The build out of this residence took over 10 years to complete. Camelback Castle as it is known today is one of Arizona's more infamous historical landmarks. *Note there is a pretty cool Bob Vila this Old House segment that was filmed at the property in 1986.

**I really appreciate unique architecture, Arizona desert scapes, illumination and snapping photos & video as a hobbyist...with that said, please understand I'm not a pro photographer or video editor so the vid & edits are a bit clunky here and there...hope you can look past these foibles and enjoy the castle...Winter is Coming!

ほぼロッククライミングなノリでした。
急斜面過ぎて両手使わないと無理!

Camelback Mountain (O'odham: Cew S-wegiom) is a mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.[3] The mountain, a prominent landmark of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
History
A cave discovered on the north side of Camelback Mountain indicates that it was used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam Culture before they abandoned the area in the 14th century.[4]
In January 1879, United States President Rutherford B. Hayes included Camelback Mountain as part of a one million acre (4,000 km²) reservation for the Salt River Pima and Maricopa American Indian tribes.[5] Six months later, at the behest of Charles Poston, the Arizona Territorial Legislature reversed the decision in order to ensure the primacy of the 5000 non-Indian area residents as well as their continued access to Salt River water.[6]
Efforts to protect Camelback Mountain as a natural preserve began in the early 1910s. However, by the 1960s, nearly all of the area had been sold to private interests. Federal and state authorities attempted to stop development above the one thousand and six hundred feet level. They failed to halt development and in 1963 efforts to arrange a land exchange failed in the Arizona State legislature. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.[7]
The peak lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road that starts in Scottsdale and goes about 34 miles (55 km) west past the West Valley suburbs of Goodyear and Litchfield Park. It starts again past the White Tanks.
Camelback Mountain is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.[8]
Geology
The mountain is composed of a geologic unconformity between two separate rock formations. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian granite (ca. 1.5 billion years old). The head of the camel is predominantly red sedimentary sandstone from the Chattian stage of the Oligocene epoch(ca. 25 million years old).[9]
Recreation
Two hiking trails ascend 1,280 feet (390 m) to the peak of Camelback Mountain. The Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles (1900 m) and the Cholla Trail is 1.4 mi (2300 m). Both trails are considered strenuous with steep grades. The hiking path has dirt, gravel, boulders, and some handrail-assisted sections. The average hike requires a round trip time of 1.5 to 3 hours.[10]
The Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation which is used for rock climbing. Located on the northern slope, the formation resembles the silhouette of a man kneeling in prayer.[11] It rises approximately 100 feet (30 m) and the eastern face has several permanent anchor bolts for attaching a belay rope.[

Hiking Camelback Mountain, Arizona
While in Arizona presenting at the NSTA Conference my daughter and I hiked Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was a great hike, beautiful scenery. What I enjoyed most was spending quality and serene time with my daughter Chelsa. It was nice to see so many individuals of all ages and physical abilities hiking the trail. Camelback mountain is 2,704 feet above sea level. It is made up of primarily sandstone, the hump of Camelback is made up of granite. The flora and fauna is typical of what is seen in Sonara desert area aside from larger mammals. The music is provided by Peer Gynt Lobogris, superb guitarist. The song is entitled The Last Sunset. Peer Gynt Lobogris's music can be found on Jamendo.
Piestewa Peak Trail - Phoenix, Arizona
Piestewa peak trail – one of the iconic local Phoenix hikes. It’s short, but scenic and a great workout. I’ve driven by Piestewa thousands of times but never climbed it before. I decided to change that recently. I am admittedly more of a backpacker and usually enjoy more solitude, but for training and just to get outside for a little bit, the local Phoenix hikes are a great alternative. Piestewa peak is easily accessible and reasonably challenging. It fits the bill nicely if you need to get the blood pumping and not be stuck in a gym while you’re doing it.
