2009 08 13 At Camp Bonifas Gate (S. Korea)
Some days I get to go to some rather interesting places in the course of my duties. This place was one of them. I mentioned the ROK soldiers as they are by far the largest group up here, but there are also a small, but VERY determined and dedicated group of US Soldiers as well. The ROK soldiers got the mention as I had just talked with my coworker about them and their sharp uniforms right before I started filming. Not to forget also the many members of the UN Neutral Observer mission. (Sweden is part of that - Shout out to my wife's country). Anyways, interesting place!

[Watch in HD]
Went to South Korea for 9 days and 8 nights last November! :)
Reunited with an old friend to explore The Land of the Morning Calm together.
In celebration of Korea's recent summit, Day 5 is where we booked a tour that took us to the Demilitarised Zone and Joint Security Area of Korea in Paju, South Korea. The cat and dog history of the North and South is an interesting one and from seeing these attractions, it made us root for their eventual reunification. Later that day, we had a Korean Hweh dinner with our Airbnb hostess at a Korean Hweh restaurant. Definitely one for the books!

Korean DMZ Vets:
Biden visits DMZ and observes North Korean side of border
US Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday visited the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) separating South Korea from the North, a visit that was likely to cast attention on global concerns about North Korea's nuclear programme.
Biden met with soldiers at the US military's Camp Bonifas near the South-North border, in Paju, and went to Observation Post Ouellette, one of 77 guard posts that line the South Korean side of the border.
He then stopped further down the road at Freedom House, an administrative building in the southern sector of Panmunjom, which lies inside the 2.5-mile-wide Demilitarised Zone that separates the two Koreas.
The visit, which took place on the last day of a long-planned trip to South Korea, came just hours after North Korea freed Merrill Newman, an elderly US veteran of the Korean War after a weekslong detention.
Biden welcomed the release and called Newman shortly after the 85-year-old landed in Beijing from North Korea, where he had been detained for more than a month.
North Korean authorities had pulled Newman off a plane while he was touring the country six decades after the war.
Biden said he had played no direct role in securing Newman's release and offered no thoughts on why the North decided to release him.
The North's official Korean Central News Agency said Pyongyang made the decision because the Newman had apologised for his alleged crimes during the Korean War and because of his age and medical condition.
Biden told the released American that the US must also work to secure the release of Kenneth Bae, another US citizen in Pyongyang's custody, Biden's office said.
Tension remains on the Korean Peninsula, though Pyongyang's angry rhetoric against the US and South Korea has toned down compared with its torrent of springtime threats to launch nuclear strikes and restart nuclear bomb fuel production.

Tour of the Demilitarized Zone
세계 유일의 관광지 - 외국인들의 DMZ 투어
North Korea is swiftly gaining attention from the world with U.S. President Trump agreeing to hold a summit with Kim Jong-un.
Congruently, more foreign tourists are visiting the Demilitarized Zone, or the DMZ, to get a glimpse of the scars and wounds of the Korean War. Let’s visit the site to learn more about Korean history.
The DMZ tour begins in central Seoul every morning. What compelled these non-Koreans to join this tour?
My expections for this tour are...hopefully to see..to have a good view of North Korea and to learn a little bit more about what life is like for them, and also to learn a little bit more about history of North and South Korea.
The DMZ is a buffer zone established in 1953 when the Armistice Agreement was signed, along the north and south of the Military Demarcation Line, 2km into North Korea and 2km into South Korea.
The first destination is Imjingak Pavilion in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do ( , ) Province, about an hour drive from Seoul. Only 7km from the ceasefire line, it is the railroad disconnection point between South and North Korea.
This place is also dubbed the “hometown for displaced people” due to the close proximity to the North. Here, they perform ancestral rites by bowing toward their hometowns every New Year's Day and Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving.
Behind the Mangbaedan Memorial Alter is the Bridge of Freedom, which 13,000 South Korean prisoners crossed to return home during the war.
Keeping the bridge here is unbelievable, so that we can hear the story and know what occured here and that we can learn from it, and not resort back to the past of what happened.
North Korea conducted numerous provocations even after the ceasefire in 1953. The four underground tunnels they built for secret forays into the South are prime examples.
The Third Tunnel, in particular, was deemed to be the most threatening as an invasion tool due to its proximity to the capital; only 52km north of Seoul or a 45-minute drive by car.
Spanning over 1,635m in length, 2m in width, and 2m in height, it is estimated that approximately 30,000 soldiers could move through the tunnel per hour.
It's really nice to experience for this first hand to see exactly what it looks like and to actually see how many times the North try infiltrate into the South, to see the history how close they are to one another.
The next stop is the Dora Observatory at the northernmost point of the Military Demarcation Line where visitors can catch a rare glimpse of North Korea through binoculars. How do foreign visitors feel, seeing North Korea in person? The North Korean flag catches the eye. South Korea also has its giant flag on its side, and they are known to be the tallest flagpoles in the respective countries.
Although the Korean War was suspended 65 years ago, tension and peace still coexist in the area.
Its history is still going on, as a history major it's interesting and fascinating to see. There's no movement you don't see this where we come from.
The last destination is Dorasan Station, the only international station across the nation. It was once a route for freight trains with industrial supplies traveling into the North but now a tourist train running once a day. The station is one of many symbols of Korea's separation, but it also reflects the hopes for a successful reunification. It’s currently the last station toward the north, but it will eventually be the first one on the northern side when the railways are connected.
How did the foreign visitors enjoy the DMZ tour?
It's a very interesting tour, very sad to see separation between two the Koreas when obviously they should be together, wish them the best of luck but I'm not very sure if it's gonna be done in our life time.

However, he added that the three involved parties - The two Koreas, and the UNC - should first agree on the action guidelines that can ensure tourists' safety. The Command is working closely with the South Korean government to approve the Paju and Cheorwon routes of the DMZ Peace Dulle-gil Trails. The opening of these two routes had been deferred.

Deputy Commander Eyre mentioned that a government-led event marking the first anniversary of the April 27th Panmunjeom Declaration is planned. He also highlighted that the Unification Ministry and the U.N. Command are working closely together in the JSA. He added the role of the UNC will not change even when the wartime operational command is transferred to Seoul in the future.
