PORT COLBORNE WELLAND CANAL NIAGARA FALLS ONTARIO CANADA
The freighters at this canal will blow your mind as their 30,000-ton weight is lifted up and over the Niagara Escarpment. Originally developed in 1829 for the purpose of a safe detour for ships to go around Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal has a long and rich history to offer visitors to the area. With 27 miles of water, the canal has eight locks, the first seven being in the first 9 miles of the canal from Thorold and north. Locks, or sections of water that are closed off with gates, raise or lower vessels with the water levels. As the water flows downhill from Lake Erie toward Lake Ontario, the locks are filled and emptied. The Lock 3 Viewing Complex has an elevated area for easy viewing of the canal. Visit the Welland Canal, located 15 minutes from Niagara Falls and next to the St. Catharines Museum, and explore the system of locks for a fun and educational experience.
Niagara Falls is a set of massive waterfalls located on the Niagara River. Niagara Falls (French: les Chutes du Niagara) comprises three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls (sometimes called the Canadian Falls), the American Falls, and the smaller, adjacent Bridal Veil Falls. While not exceptionally high, Niagara Falls is very wide. With more than 6 million cubic feet (168,000 m³) of water falling over the crestline every minute it is the most powerful waterfall in North America. Wikipedia CC

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - Rideau Canal HD (2015)
The Rideau Canal, also known unofficially as the Rideau Waterway, connects the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on the Ottawa River to the city of Kingston, Ontario, on Lake Ontario. It is 202 kilometres in length. The name Rideau, French for curtain, is derived from the curtain-like appearance of the Rideau River's twin waterfalls where they join the Ottawa River. The canal system uses sections of two rivers, the Rideau and the Cataraqui, as well as several lakes. The Rideau Canal is operated by Parks Canada.
The canal was opened in 1832 as a precaution in case of war with the United States. It remains in use today primarily for pleasure boating, with most of its original structures intact, operated by Parks Canada. The locks on the system open for navigation in mid-May and close in mid-October. It is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America, and in 2007 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I spent a great deal of time recording video in and around the Rideau Canal lock system, the Ottawa River, and Major's Hill Park.
Just as I was about to head home with no luck in capturing boats going through, I caught this! Some video showing how the locks work like a watery staircase for boats.

On July 7, 2010, contractors hoisted five steel stop logs into place upstream of the lock to stem the flow of water through the canal. Over the coming weeks, a temporary dam will be constructed downstream of the lock to hold back the waters of the St. Marys River. Once both the stop logs and dam are in place, the water in between the two structures can be pumped out. A silt curtain will be hung downstream of the pumps to capture sediments that may have accumulated in the canal.

Why No Rideau Canal Trip??
After spending a couple of days at Trent Port Marina in Trenton, we were planning to head east on Lake Ontario and visit at least part of the Rideau Canal. I had actually booked two nights at Confederation basin Marina in Kingston ( as well as one night in Picton Marina ( for the run over.
Unfortunately, after learning that the Quebec Construction Holiday ( was going to be occurring right when we had hoped to be visiting the Rideau, we determined that it was not the best time for us to be heading that way. So, we decided to turn around at Trenton, returning north-west and going all the way through the 240 miles of the Trent Severn Waterway with an ultimate goal of heading out onto Georgian Bay for a number of days.
As luck had it, we were able to enjoy nearly a full week on The Bay! I hope you'll follow along as we continue north and out to Georgian Bay :-)
