Grand Canyon | Helicopter Tour | Williams AZ | RV Living!
After visiting the Sedona area, we wanted to move closer to the Grand Canyon! Neither of us had been to the Grand Canyon before and it was one of the first things we put on our must-see list once we knew we were going to do this RV thing!
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Click Show More ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
For this leg of our journey, we decided to stay at Railside RV Ranch ( which, you guessed it, is right beside the railway line that runs from Williams to the Grand Canyon. Luckily, that railway is strictly a passenger line and doesn't run late at night like the one in Williamsburg!
Williams is a very cool little town right along historic Route 66. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and breweries and, of course, we frequented a bit of each.
The highlight of this location was obviously the grand canyon! We checked it out by truck, motorcycle, and HELICOPTER!
Since the day we started planning our adventures out west, we knew we wanted to take some kind of air tour of the Grand Canyon. Since our visit to the area happened to coincide with Tara's birthday, that seemed like the perfect time! I took a seaplane ride to the Dry Tortugas on my birthday, so fair is fair! ????
We picked Maverick Helicopter because that's just a really cool name (and they had great reviews)! ????
They are big helicopters, holding about 8 people each with great views in both the front and back seat. Luckily, we got a front seat! The tour takes off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport just inside the park on route 64. The first few minutes are fairly uneventful while flying over the forest. Forest...forest...forest... BAM!! The bottom of the world just drops out leaving us thousands of feet over the canyon! That was AMAZING! The entire flight, we were completely overwhelmed with spectacular views in every direction! There's just not much I can do to explain it in words. Good thing this is a video post! ????
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Williams and the Grand Canyon.
Next up in our travels, we have our first long term true boondocking stay on Lone Rock Beach in Utah! Stay tuned! ????

Grand Canyon, Arizona, by road along the South Rim, May 2012.
Driving from Flagstaff on Route 66, north on US 189, westwards on State Route 64 along the Grand Canyon's edge and then southwards on US 180 to Willam's Grand Central Station, on Route 66, the Main Road of America, the Mother Road. Driving through Canyon lands and parks was beautiful, but was bit surprised at the requirement to pay, and the cost, of just driving on route 64 which, righfully, was the only road through the area. Grand Canyon #5: Historic Route 66 from Williams to Flagstaff on Interstate 40 / Route 66 2016-06-01
This short drive from Williams, Arizona, is the last leg on a day's drive from Flagstaff to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and back to Flagstaff on a different highway from the one used getting to Flagstaff in the morning.
Like Flagstaff, Williams is a Grand canyon day-drive base, one with higher-priced hotels than Flagstaff, and is more immersed in recreated Route 66 tourist nostalgia.
A previous video went through Williams' westbound downtown one-way street to the west side of town. This video begins from that location. It heads east through the eastbound one-way street (the busier of the two one-way streets) through downtown's quaint Route 66 facade , before leaving Williams to get on Interstate 40 eastbound back to Flagstaff to end Day 1 to the South Rim of grand Canyon National Park.

Arizona Highway 64 - Tusayan - Grand Canyon | Drive America's Highways ????
???? Drive America's Highways for 6 miles west along AZ-64 from Tusayan to Grand Canyon National Park (parking lot 1) in Arizona ????
During this trip, we pass through the ticket/ranger station and skip about 7 minutes of waiting. We would highly suggest purchasing a park pass if you are in the area so that you can visit all the various parks nearby for one price rather than paying the $10 or so each visit to each park.

Should I Visit the West Rim or the South Rim of the Grand Canyon?
The big decision: Should I visit the West Rim or the South Rim of the Grand Canyon? Play video and you'll find your answer.
Here's an article that solves the riddle, too:
And once you've got the Rim conundrum resolved, I suggest you head directly to this tour review site and get a trip:
Now as far as the Rims are concerned, it first boils down to where you're starting from.
Generally speaking, there are two places: Las Vegas, NV, and Tusayan, AZ.
If you are in Las Vegas, most likely you'll be headed to the West Rim. This is especially true in regards to helicopter tours, which ONLY fly to the West Rim.
If you are in Vegas and want to go by bus or airplane, you can visit both rims. And if you decide it's the South, I strongly recommend airplane as it gets you there in 60 minutes versus 5.5 hours on ground.
Now, if you are starting out from Arizona in such a place like Sedona, Phoenix, Flagstaff and etc. then you'll want to do the South Rim exclusively.
Understand that there are no planes, buses and helicopters that connect the two rims. And if you're in Arizona and want to go from South Rim to West, consider the fact that it will involve about 5 hours of one-way drive time!
When evaluating which Rim, consider your objectives. Do you want thrills and action? Go to the West. Do you want incredible scenic beauty? Go South.
Indeed, there are more things to consider when determining a) which Grand Canyon tour to take; and b) which part of the National Park to visit. And that's covered quickly and concisely in this video.
Here's that article link again:

Which Airport is the closest to Grand Canyon National Park?
When flying to the Grand Canyon, you have your choice of Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix and Flagstaff, Arizona. Economically, you will probably choose Las Vegas, but Phoenix will allow you to drive you Sedona and Flagstaff. Flagstaff is actually the closest, but you might want to watch this video and find out if it is the right airport for you.
